Synopsis

In 1960s Tokyo, Gonda owns a bar in which the gay, cross-dresser, and trans scenes meet. Gonda is in a relationship with the madam of the bar, Leda. As the younger Eddie starts a passionate affair with Gonda, she ignites the jealousy of Leda, unaware of another kind of history between them.

The interviewer’s cluelessness and the sincerity and openness of the interviewees stands out. Their voices are given more credibility than the interviewer, than the director, than the filmmakers entirely. This is the heart of the film’s sympathy. The Oedipal plotline was a shock to one of my friends/comrades who watched with me; this time around I saw its pieces fall neatly into place. It’s hard to remember what it’s like to watch a film without any understanding of what you’re going into, even though I do it all the time. It’s also funnier each time, watching the internal commentary, watching the weird jokes about Menas Jokas and party games. However, the imagery still stands out over the rest of the film; three gay boys at the urinals destroys every other queer film imagery ever. Pride month: 17/30

Ten years later, this remains the most powerful film experience of my life. It was part of my awakening; it was part of my journey through grief; it was part of my evolution as a writer. It’s a perfect queer film, something that eschews standard narrative forms, something that engages deep queer themes of identity and reality, and something that reinvents its medium. Sharing it with friends is such a joy.

TW: suicide, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia The first time I watched this, I was not ready to call myself a woman. At the time, I had not yet begun my social transition offline and I had not begun my medical transition. I was floundering, hopeless, lost, afraid, and filled with self-loathing, but all of that had been muted for a long time under the crushing weight of grief and guilt over Kaylie’s suicide. (I still think of her every day, and when I watched this, her ghost sat beside me.) Internalized transphobia would wound me every time I tried to think of myself as a woman; internalized misogyny would rip the wound open. I still struggle with these feelings, with this…

With subliminal Warholian vignettes, fragments of cinematic hapax legomena (if such term could be applied to the film industry), assaulting psychosexual imagery, fragments of societal ridicule, jaw-dropping personifications, a fractured chronology, revolutionary techniques of film editing, a ghastly and hypnotic camera work and metafilm self-references, Bara no sôretsu is one of the most enthralling, unpredictable and thought-provoking avant-garde experiments that international celluloid has ever offered to mankind. It starts with a statement: “I am a wound and a sword, a victim and an executioner.” Then it proceeds with an alienating world beyond our comprehension. That is the first invitation you will ever receive to turn off your screen or leave the theater, because this nearly-metaphysical parade of memoir fragments and…

Reclamation of self. Funeral Parade of Roses is a landmark in gay and trans cinema. Nothing is off limits and all boundaries of cinema and society can be transgressed. Sexuality and gender are fluid and undefined within Funeral Parade of Roses, which spreads such ideas of identity across a sprawling audiovisual canvas. There is no consistent style to Funeral Parade of Roses, except cinematic chaos. At times the film is minimalist and intimate, yet other moments are bold and expressive. It is fast, and then it will be slow. The timeline doesn’t exist, or isn’t followed. Instead the film exits its own reality frequently, to interview the cast. It spoils itself and refuses to focus its narrative momentum in any…

I really don’t know how to feel about Funeral Parade of Roses, there are some parts I adore and some parts I really dislike, borderline hate. Initially, I thought I would love this going in seeing as I tend to enjoy boundary pushing queer cinema from around this period, specifically The Servant (1963) and The Boys in the Band (1970), but for whatever reason I didn’t get drawn in nearly as much. There is a lot to like here. The…

ngl this movie is actually so insane. I don’t know if it’s because almost all of the Japanese films I’ve watched have leaned more avant garde but I just don’t get how these film makers can think of such unique story telling and progression. It’s amazing to see how much influence this film has had on other movies and even Japanese literature released after it…like yall can’t tell me this didn’t inspire Japan Sinks 2020

This is one of those rare cases where a film simultaneously fascinates and repels, leaving you with the feeling that you’ve just been at the center of an explosion. Toshio Matsumoto didn’t just make a movie — he created a true psychedelic collage, blending documentary, surrealist drama, and outright trash cinema. What grabs you first is its absolute, unapologetic boldness. Watching trans individuals and gay subculture being portrayed with such freedom in 1960s Japan is incredibly valuable. The scenes at…

A disturbing, yet delightful exploration of gender and identity. Toshio Matsumoto builds a gritty, black and white world in which each character is equally insane, yet they’re actions feel natural and human. Through ideas of self expression, escapism, existentialism and trauma, the watcher is fully immersed into late 1960s Tokyo, courtesy of the uniquely grounding camera work. The way the characters’s actions are explained through the concept of masks and naturally forming facades was nothing short of genius, especially in…

A queer classic from Japan in the late sixties, subversive in both its content and its form, shot in a beautiful black and white. It’s decades ahead of its time, and could well have inspired A Clockwork Orange and My Own Private Idaho (so the bonuses tell me). It’s also reminiscent of the great Daisies which came out around the same time in Czechoslovakia. just when I thought love triangles couldn’t get any better, they made it incestuous. but focusing solely on that would be a dismerit to it’s charm, creativity, joyful aesthetic, and playful meta language; how it consecrates the taboo, subverts identity, and has one of the best cuts in movie history, “The cursed destiny of man! 😄 It was such a unique film with cruelty and laughter. Let’s look forward to the next one! Goodbye.”

God damn what a shocking end to a film, absolutely haunting imagery. The way this was filmed was so unique and the way the fucked up images and riots and interviews are spliced it really captures the fractured mind of Eddie. The small details like whenever Eddie and their friends walk outside all the people they pass look back for just a second at them every single time. Funeral Parade of Roses is a brilliant and radical work of art that steps on every established rule of cinema in order to create a transgressive and engrossing viewing experience. the documentary footage blending into the story feels so raw and intimate. i really like this movie and its editing, i also really like how progressive it is while still paying homage to its country’s roots and conservative traditions. it explores gender identity, sexuality, and self expression with such respect and humanity that it honestly feels decades ahead of its time. i still can’t get over the plot since i watched it for the first time tho, it’s almost emotionally draining.. the oedipal influence is such an interesting foundation for a story about identity and desire.. can’t wait to rewatch it again someday!!

Complicated in terms of representation: explicitly showcasing and celebrating gay and trans characters in 60s Japan, yet it doesn’t escape the cliché portrayal of the trans person as a psychotic criminal. In any case, a fascinating film. Ps. There is a widespread internet rumour that this film influenced Kubrick in making A Clockwork Orange.

After you watch this is there anything else to do in life. This is a must watch for anyone i dont remember the last time i was left speechless by how versatile and defining a movie can be. Everything is just so unique and beautiful. it’s very layered and carries a lot of meaning behind it. For me this has one of the most creative filmmaking skills and editing ever put on screen. Queer cinema is weirdly enough pretty impressive.

100/100 A monumental, almost impossible to talk about masterpiece that becomes so necessary in the understanding of society as a whole. Toshio Matsumoto’s Funeral Parade of Roses is beautifully painful. A tragic adventure through Japanese sub-culture as it relates and comments on sexuality as a whole. It presents Japan as a way different country than the idealized version most Westerners have settle with – a cruel, deeply misogynistic and violent world that has no place for understand. A presenter asks “Why…
