Ugh, hell yes. Alex Honnold is one of the most interesting people alive. I’ve been interested in him before this movie so I was automatically going in pretty excited. This doc did such a great job at tapping into the psychological impacts his passion has rather than just the “OHH SHIT DUDE YOU COULD DIE”. Very ethical film as well. Overall just felt super engaging and had me doing a lot of thinking. But MAN, he is the shittiest boyfriend of all time lmfao. Maybe my favorite documentary of the year so far.

what was more monumental, alex climbing the mountain or alex saying “i love you, i appreciate you”?

the most stressful part of this movie was trying to figure out why these two people are dating

The great thing about cinema is that it allows us to experience things we would never be able to do in real life, like spend more than 5 seconds with this unbearable prick.

i cant stop thinking about how he had to teach himself how to hug at the big age of 23. why did his parents do that to him?? look what you’ve done to him…now he climbs big rocks to feel ALSO when he drank boiled water STRAIGHT out of a SAUCEPAN??? literally what the fuck! maybe the wildest thing i’ve ever seen on film

“The free soloing mentality is pretty close to warrior culture, where you give something 100% focus because your life depends on it.” “This is your path and you will pursue it with excellence.”

Yeah, I saw Alex climb Taipei 101 in-person this year or whatever… I’m glad I viewed this after seeing Alex climb that tower because I don’t know if I would have actually gone to watch him if I’d known that I would be screaming constantly at the screen during his documentary for Sanni to break up with him.

The story of a man who does not love his girlfriend Jesus H Christ There were so many moments in the movie that made me way more anxious than I expected. Very few times you get to be an eyewitness to someone pushing the very limits of what we thought was possible

“Nobody achieves anything great because they’re happy and cozy” Alex is equally obnoxious as he is inspiring. He free soloed el cap so whatever I guess.

It’s a nice documentary, but it might be better if Herzog made it (BIG missed opportunity). I still don’t understand rock climbers. By comparison, hiking in Alaska and living inside an abandoned bus sounds more reasonable to me.

4.5/5 Stars Documentary Review #2 • Type shit that makes you wanna do go run a mile at 3 in the morning. Everything about this man is so interesting and inspiring. I can’t even imagine living with the psyche of his. Truly one of the most nerve racking and stressed induced things I’ve seen with my own eyes. I truly can’t even imagine what was going through his brain of his while climbing that mountain. I loved the aspects of…

After seeing the spectacle of Alex’s climb for the first time, a lot of the development in the first and second acts of this film feel very forced, almost reality-tv level scripted to portray specific points about the severity of free soloing El Cap, which would be better portrayed without all the talking to camera interviews and curated quotes. But when Alex finally gets on the wall and all the build up from the past hour of teaching the audience about the magnitude of this moment in climbing finally pays off, it really is delightful in a way no other film could be.

D
One of the greatest feats of strength and mental fortitude in human history. The cinematography of Honnold scaling El Capitan with the valley below are some of the most spectacular shots ever captured.

You can achieve anything. Bravery isn’t the absence of fear. Practice what you do so much that you have no choice but to succeed.

It has achieved everything 14 peaks failed at !!! I have been a fan of climbing since i read the manga The Climber (or Ascension), i haven’t watched many documentaries about climbing (it’s only my third one) but I’ve watched YouTube videos about the subject and still to this day nothing made a bigger impact than The Climber for me. Free solo is the closest thing to The Climber and thus to real climbing i have seen yet. From directing to…

it makes sense that his amygdala is not active, i mean for someone to go to this extreme theres gotta be smth wrong with them. its kinda cool how he needs more stimulation than others for his amygdala to activate. i didnt like his attitude, but he did IB too so i cant complain. hes so avoidant holy shit. he genuinely doesnt see the good in people at all. “weird dude but i find him intrresting” been there. “the bottomless pit of self-loathing” i don’t like pitting people but i feel bad. the part she was giving him a haircut made me so emotional.

“Maybe it’s for future generations, you know? Or maybe just somebody who has nothing to live for” One of the most insane achievements in human history I loved how they showed his psyche and how his brain almost can’t feel fear, so he does such life or death feats to try chase that feeling. Maybe the love part of his brain doesnt work either, because that poor girlfriend got treated like a pet hamster

Terrifying and awesome. I’ve seen so many interviews and clips of this and somehow have never watched it. It’s rly interesting what they included and what they didn’t, like the two times he got psyched out on the climb that wasn’t included. I think the emotional toll of free soloing is insane, and they did a great job showing that.

True hunger for a challenge, he did what made him truly alive and that’s so inspirational. All that was said in this doc about pursuing greatness by leaving your comfort zone almost didn’t need to be said, you just need to see him climb that wall and that will tell you so much more than what words could.

“So delighted”…and then the hunger returns. (Alex Honnold).
- Synopsis
- Follow Alex Honnold as he attempts to become the first person to ever free solo climb Yosemite's 3,000 foot high El Capitan wall. With no ropes or safety gear, this would arguably be the greatest feat in rock climbing history.
