It’s official: Pixar is corrupting our children. Thanks to “Finding Dory,” a new generation of impressionable kids — many of whom were too young to be properly indoctrinated by the mediocrity of “Cars 2” and “Monsters University” — will grow up thinking that sequels can be good, natural things that shouldn’t be protested against on principle (it’s “Adam and Eve,” not “Adam and Adam 2: Genisys”!). These innocent souls are too sheltered to appreciate how much of an anomaly this is in a year that’s already punished audiences with blockbuster cash-ins like “London Has Fallen” and “Alice Through the Looking Glass.” But now, thanks to the monsters behind Pixar’s latest and best sequel in years, the leaders of tomorrow across the world will come of age with the delusional belief that sequels aren’t de facto cash-ins, but rather films that are capable of retroactively adding new dimensions to beloved originals. While I am totally against Pixar’s recent sequel phase, I think this film gets much more hate than it deserves. Really well done besides some of the excessive Nemo references in the beginning. Loved it.

– Thoughts: I appreciate some things about this movie. The times it called back to ‘Finding Nemo’ was cool and Dory piecing together forgotten memories to find her parents keeps you engaged in the storyline. That said, it’s just “meh”. I understand it’s part of Dory’s character but the amount of times we have to hear her recite that she has short-term memory loss is a bit nauseating. First revisit since the theatre which was apparently 10 years ago? Opening sequences are messy as hell, they feel rushed and distracted and the movie has this aura of obligation to it. Its foundation is built entirely on over-exploring passing character moments from the first movie. Squid sequence is cool but feels like it could’ve easily been something cut from Nemo. I was looking at my past reviews and tried to compare this movie to see how many stars I wanted to give it. It was on the same level as Chicken Little to me but the thing that made it a little better was the animation. Some scenes when they got to the aquarium looked pretty real. I also enjoyed how it showed how Dory met Nemo, like how it was in the first movie. Overall decent film. – 📚

I honestly have more stock in this one than Nemo. I was thirteen when it came out and the raw emotion and gorgeous setting/ atmosphere changed my brain chemistry.

A film full of some pretty wonderful duos, but Kaitlin Olson and Ty Burrell might be my favorite. (Pretty lethal to be able to just pull out Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy whenever you feel like it too.)

I need to write down the reviews before I forget and have to rewatch the films again. Finding Dory manages to be good at making Dory the main character compared to a certain movie with a tow truck. The film is a bit worse than Finding Nemo for how I find the B-plot underwhelming here, but the third act is the best from the series.

when this premiered, and for the entirety of its theatrical run, pixar should have constructed networks of pipes in the theaters that ran to desalination plants around the world. the volume of tears shed would have solved the water crisis we’re in right now. jesus fuck.

A solid Pixar movie by any stretch. The animation is, yet again, stellar. The sets and characters all have a unique style that is more defined than the original. The action and colors of the film stand out. But it’s definitely not Finding Nemo. While not overextending its welcome by any stretch, you start to feel the runtime at the end. I feel the hate for this on letterboxd is overblown. Yes its not as imaginative as the first film and not as big of a visual feast but deep down it has a very heartbreaking story. Who knew Dory was a character of tragedy? And nothing hits the feels like a good Thomas Newman score. Above all else, this movie really makes me want to visit Monterey Bay Aquarium again. It was fun to rewatch this as I continued to enjoy its focus on the importance of family, blood or chosen. It provided the Pixar laughs, but not the sadness they are known for. Baby Dory is cute af though.
