O
Ric Roman Waugh, having since become a reliable old hand in the action genre, made a splash for me personally when I came across this on Tv about a decade ago. It’s ostensibly a prison fight movie, that makes do by doubling as an elegant drama. It has a very mean, nihilistic, David Ayer realism aspect to the world of its prison. The failings of the prison industrial complex, and those power hungry enough to work for it permeate throughout the film like they’re the pathogen from The Thing. Everything Stephen Dorffs character does is the wrong move and the movie certainly wrings out every bit of tension it can from that. But the oppressive vileness of the film’s world…

It is the most satisfying and heart-breaking ending. This is the other extreme of Brawl in Cell Block 99, an innocent man who kills someone by accident, entering the prison and getting himself tangled in the dirty affairs of prison. Prisons are scaring me now, I better be a good citizen.

As you all know, Val Kilmer died recently! And despite his 11-year struggle with throat cancer… which he ultimately beat, although the battle took a toll on him and damaged his voice… the news about his death was still shocking to me, because he was only 65! It’s funny how the concept of age changes as you get older. When I was young, in my early 20s, 60 seemed so far away, and I thought people in their 60s were frail old folks… Now that I’m in my early 40s (43 in June), the 60s seem (too) close to me… and I definitely don’t think of people in their 60s as frail anymore. They’re older, sure… but not frail. But…

Moral of the story: If you catch somebody robbing your house, and they panic and run, stay in the building and call 911. Don’t chase them outside with a baseball bat, and do not, under any circumstances, hit them fatally in the back of the head with it.

Prison sucks—especially when Val Kilmer’s your jailhouse Yoda and guards draft inmates like UFC cards. It’s Fight Club meets Shawshank, minus the soap.

Unable to make up its mind whether it wants to be a look at a corrupt system, a story of the brotherhood of thieves, or a pulpy prison yarn, “Felon” lands as a merely mediocre combination of all of the above. Starring Stephen Dorff, Harold Perrineau, and Val Kilmer, the drama follows Dorff’s titular, if accidental, prisoner, as he maneuvers through every prison-film story beat known to cinema. There is grit and attitude to spare, and the story comes together at the end. The path to that end, however, rings as flatly as the work as a whole.

I don’t know, man. I fucking love this movie. I’ve been a fan of Stephen Dorff ever since I was a kid and saw him in Blade. Then when this came out I instantly became a fan of Ric Roman Waugh, everything about this is blue collar, there’s nothing grand about the way it’s made. It’s gritty and invasive, it puts you right into hell with its protagonist and that’s why it works. Prison movies are typically emotional, stripping a character of their innocence is the easiest way to get you emotionally invested and this excels at that. Now I just gotta rewatch Shot Caller.

There hasn’t been a better prison film that shows the terror and disturbing side of what prison life is like. And this is somewhat in the spirit of The Shawshank Redemption and Gladiator. Bradley Thomas, this review is for you, buddy! Felon is about a family man who is sent to prison after killing a burglar, and he must learn to cope with it and deal with the most violent prisoners and a sadistic prison guard. Oh, how this movie takes me back. Back when I wasted my teenage years, I remember watching it on Starz one night with my best friend after playing Call of Duty for 2 hours, and we took a break to reboot our energy. And then,…

A surprisingly good DTDVD prison movie that knows how to make the setting properly claustrophobic. The film struggles with the fact it doesn’t know whether it wants to be a realistic portrayal of prison life or a pulpy crime movie, but the touches of grimy reality certainly aid it. It’s a film about the trickling down of the corrupt carceral system. The main villain, Harold Perrineau’s sneering Lt. Jackson, is simply a prison guard, a middle manager whose superiors choose…

For a seemingly low budget indie film that was probably recorded with a cam-corder, it was pretty good. Its like a temu shot caller though.

Val Kilmer absolutely throwing gas. You read that and probably think—since it’s a low budget, mediocrely reviewed prison movie—I mean hamming it up and chewing the scenery. But no, I mean giving a genuinely great supporting performance. Is it melodramatic? Is the writing a little wonky? Are some of the line readings stiff? Sure. But it’s a low budget indie. Live a little.

Really good prison movie. Makes your feel hopeless and then surprises you with moral endings. Cheesy early 2000s movie aspects at times, like camera work and some story points, but overall a really good movie. This is the ying to yang of “Shot caller”

I believe I watched this during my stay in the Marshall Islands. We would get shitty DVDs or UFC fights whenever a ship would come in. Watching Stephen Dorff win every fight in the “yard” was pretty unbelievable. The dude is 5’5, 160 and he destroys everyone Hey, there’s Val Kilmer.

Felon is a gritty and surprisingly powerful prison drama that explores how quickly an ordinary life can spiral into a brutal fight for survival. Rather than glamorizing prison life, it presents a harsh and realistic look at violence, corruption, and the struggle to maintain one’s humanity. ✔️ Pros: * Strong performances by Stephen Dorff and Val Kilmer * Dark, gritty, and believable prison atmosphere * Emotional character development * Tense and engaging throughout * Explores justice, survival, and redemption in…

When Val Kilmer walked in and asked “are we going to f*ck or fight” I was very disappointed when the main character said “neither”. People wonder why Heated Rivalry did so well and ignore all these small let-downs over the years.

This has a very muddled and confused tone. On the one hand, it clearly highlights the obvious injustices and the barbaric nature that are evident in the American prison system, yet it has a sensational and tacky need to almost glamorise the survival of the fittest clichés done a million times before. Its only saving grace is that the majority of the acting is highly commendable, Harold Perrineau deserves a better career and when Val Kilmer really fancied it his talent was unparalleled.

Pointless PSA kinda shit that’s meant to make you angry or something idk. Apparently the writer/director spent 2 years “undercover” as a parole volunteer. What a waste of time.

It’s definitely not as good as Shot Caller but thematically it fits really well in the trilogy as Money’s opposite. Both initially skim the surface of the world of prison gangs but here we see a man manage to get out, which might be the reason the movie doesn’t feel super intense

The box art/poster for this looks cheesy. I am not a fan of Dorf. Though he was good in True Detective…that wasnt around in 2008. I watched this on a whim back then, and I am glad I did. This is a decent film, and everyone turns in good performances.

-

Who needs a budget when you have a script this fucking good. Not that the production values are bad at all. This actually captures a very serious and brutal reality that’s handled with all the care respect it deserves.

Despite the atrocious poster and questionable director, Felon (2008) is actually awesome. Giving a lot of S. Craig Zahler, especially Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017). Prison in this movie is an otherworldly Hell where normal functioning people in society go and are transformed into violent maniacs, the guards included. But not me, if I was in this movie I would have a panic attack and die from over exhaustion or something.

“You wanna fuck or fight” is something I hope I’m only ever asked by a woman and certainly not a bearded Val Kilmer, who later gives an auraful monologue about revenge. This movie is similar to Shot Caller but feels more gritty, and it has the fresh air of the 2000s. Apparently, it’s the same director behind both of these, which I find psychologically interesting, almost as if he’s intentionally done a treatise on one of the biggest fears a middle-aged and middle-class family man can have. Indeed, any law abiding citizen would be wise to watch this one
-
T
After watching Shotcaller first, I knew I had to watch this. I genuinely thought it couldn’t live up to Shotcaller, but it exceeded all expectations. The simplicity of a prison story but extremely well told, acted and characters you could appreciate. Probably at this point, the best prison movie I have rated. I have seen Shawshank and Green Mile but have to watch them again to give them a true rating, but this is right up there!

Wade kills an intruder who broke into his house. He takes a plea of involuntary manslaughter and gets 3 years, out in 15 months. He encounters wildly corrupt guards inside and gets time added to his sentence. His cellmate John is an experienced prisoner with a life sentence. Wade and John hatch a scheme to bring down the guards. John is killed, Wade is successful. He testifies and gets released back to his wife and son to restart his life.

Wow. Ric Roman Waugh really does know how to stage brutally intense prison thrillers. With Felon and especially Shot Caller, he proves a remarkable talent for stories like these. Val Kilmer is stunning, and the rest of the cast delivers genuinely memorable performances throughout. The only thing I didn’t like was Harold Perrineau, because to me he never fully embodies the persona of a sadistic and morally unstable prison warden.

Felon is a pretty solid prison film led by strong performances from Stephen Dorff and Val Kilmer. Dorff carries the emotional weight of the film, while Kilmer does a lot with limited screen time, giving his character a quiet intensity that really stands out. The story follows the familiar prison movie cliché of an ordinary man wrongfully caught up in a violent and corrupt prison system while trying to make it back home. What works well is the atmosphere, with…

Felon is one of those movies that quietly sneaks up on you. It starts with an ordinary guy living an ordinary life and then, in one split second, everything is destroyed. That is what makes the movie so unsettling. There is no grand criminal backstory or antihero fantasy. It feels plausible. Watching Stephen Dorff’s character get swallowed whole by the prison system is genuinely stressful because you can imagine it happening to almost anyone. The movie does a great job…

Ric Roman Waugh seems to be a fan of these stories of ordinary men forced into extreme situations because of being sent to prison for accidents. This is definitely a solid prison drama but one that is mostly held up by some strong performances from Val Kilmer (RIP) and Harold Perrineau while doing very little to actually tell much of a story. A lot of the run time is just spent with the protagonist fighting people in the yard or…

I’ve heard acclaim of this being the most realistic prison movie of all time. What a daunting accomplishment, because this one was visceral. Val Kilmer delivers an incredibly emotional and powerful performance in this one, he is also incredibly badass here, running fades on guys twice his size. Surprisingly decent showcase of the prison system a psychopathic warden to drive the point across. The warden didn’t just frustrate but also scare me at times tbf, with the whole storyline turning into a thriller on multiple occasions over the runtime. The camera work is seriously mesirable and I wish they gave more time to the court hearings

More prison-system focused than shot caller, not as interesting imo but still pretty solid
-
B
This is a movie that insists it’s gritty because everyone looks vaguely malnourished and the lighting refuses to acknowledge depth. I know it’s low‑budget, but the direct‑to‑video feel is tough. The plot is a straight line: man goes to prison, prison is unpleasant, the end. It’s less a narrative than a pamphlet someone hands you at a courthouse. I wasn’t expecting Shot Caller, and if you squint you can see its DNA is there, but I was hoping for more.…

Stephen Dorff, as a building contractor who accidentally kills a home intruder, cuts a deal to do time for involuntary manslaughter in Felon. In the California State Prison at Corcoran, he survives by becoming a combatant in human dogfights, and though the film claims to be based on true events, the prison-gang sadism is laid on with a trowel. Val Kilmer, as a polite horn-rimmed sociopath with a heart of gold, keeps showing up to drop Nietzschean pensées. Grade: C Owen Gleiberman July 25, 2008 http://www.ew.com/ew/article/02021478100.html
