Nobody owns anything on the internet — not really. Just because you create something doesn’t mean that it belongs to you. And while that sort of digital socialism might read like a sad reflection on the impropriety of the information age, the truth is that ideas have been open-source since the dawn of time. Richard Dawkins coined the term “meme” in 1976 as a way to distinguish the growth of thought from the evolution of genes, and defined it as nothing more than a unit of cultural information spread by imitation. Architecture is a meme. Fashion is a meme. A chair is a meme. The only difference these days is the near-instantaneous speed at which that happens. Dawkins himself has…

Unironically the best movie of the year so far…and one of the most aesthetically energetic and creative documentaries I’ve ever seen, period. It’s always so difficult to meaningfully document internet culture in a different medium, because a) it’s hard to visualize digital trends and cultures that are largely abstract/conceptual, and b) the forms of those trends are continually changing with every whim. This doc, though, manages to tackle a startling evolution of one meme overtime in a way that is incredibly easy to follow and visually encapsulating through and through. It feels like the filmmakers were genuinely interested in understanding the bizarre, ironic and sometimes sinister idiosyncrasies of the internet without writing it all off as silly and meaningless. This…

Maybe it’s just that I watched this on Election Day, and I’m filled with the anxiety and apprehension of everyone who has lived these last four years as a waking nightmare, but I think this might be the best film about the Trump years that we’ve gotten so far. The film, obviously, is not about Trump himself. It is about Pepe the Frog, a creation of the artist and cartoonist Matt Furie that took on a life and meaning of its own in the early years of social media. That meaning turned sinister when, on 4Chan and other similar forums, Pepe was ironically paired with the most evil and transgressive ideas that exist in our society: racism, anti-Semitism, Nazism, etc.…

The most uncomfortable and uplifting viewing experience of 2020. An absolutely gut-wrenching account of the ongoing battle against hatred and the horror of seeing your creation spiral out of control and become unrecognizable. Gonna be thinking about this one for a long time.

i can’t imagine what it must be like to have a little fella you drew for years turn into a political weapon for the worst kind of people. and whatever you decide to do or don’t do only makes it worse. i felt gross watching this, but it just hurts knowing that we are still seeing the ramifications of these events. this frog has real world consequences. i feel immense pain for matt. he’s just a chill guy with a family and he likes to draw. what a fucked up time to exist :/

Film #10 off my Scavenger Hunt 137. Task 5/31: Watch a movie with “Green”, “Yellow”, or “Blue” in the title, OR featuring all three colors on the poster. Film #18 for DOCx52 2026. Task 2/52: On a subject that is not of particular interest to you I honestly feel really sad for Matt Furie and what happened to his creation. His work may not be my cup of team, but the poor guy just wanted to share his art. Somewhat interesting overall, but the doc didn’t really present the material in an especially engaging way or reveal anything particularly intriguing.

Crazy that a documentary about a frog meme is the closest thing to a Rosemary’s Baby sequel. How do you deal with birthing evil into the world and dealing with the regret of not killing it while you still could? I wouldn’t be able to handle it. Beautiful animation, but God did it leave me anxious and sad.

If I had watched this closer to when it came out in 2020, it would have hit so much harder. But flash forward six years and it is hard not to find Matt Furie maddeningly naive in the same vein as everyone else (including, to an extent, myself) who thought there was no chance Donald Trump could win the presidency again. To be clear, I do not blame Furie for Trump or the return of fascism to this country or…

Good documentary, man! I was surprised and delighted by the very high quality production of the interviews, editing, and the great original animation throughout. In this documentary we spend a lot of time talking with artist Matt Furie about his creative work and the old internet comic he made in which Pepe the Frog originated. As that character started getting picked up by different communities online, meanings were transposed onto him in unique and novel ways. I thought this was a…

Why does this weirdly remind me of the social network? Amazing commentary on just how bad this type of incel culture is and the liberating feeling of being an anon, you really can do whatever you want with just a discord username or a 4chan account.
-
W
I feel so bad for Matt Furie. I know well enough once you put your work out there, especially online, however your creation is interpreted/used is ultimately out of your hands. Even so, watching one of your creations be warped and distorted into something it was never intended to be, to be remembered as the creator of a hate symbol for a rising fascist movement that would go on to define the current political climate in the US over the past decade is the kind of snowball effect I wouldn’t wish on any artist to ever have to go through with any of their work.

This is a documentary about truths being constructed for agendas and in turn it makes its own truth, a truth comfortable enough for it’s moderately progressive audience. An audience of good values, decent standards towards people, easily aware of conservative actions but also an audience that cannot fully comprehend the vastness of nuances of the alt-right movement. Despite a rather blase approach to the alt-right’s history and usage of Pepe, it is rather surface level and fails to acknowledge the…

have to rewatch but i remember liking this when i first watched it in 2024, interesting stuff i think i will always enjoy internet history— the internet being a terrifying get fascinating place. I think a popular sentiment about the internet is that once you turn your device off all of the problems caused by social media etc. magically slip away. I dont think we live in that world anymore, and this documentary is a great snapshot of that coming to be. its not a coincidence that trump was elected president during the alt right pipeline era of 2016. anyways, great documentary.

Feels Good Man… until it snowballs into something depraved. The documentary follows the creator of Pepe the Frog as he watches his character evolve and mutate across the internet. It’s remarkable how relaxed he initially seems although, as one interviewee points out, he starts off naive about the extent to which the character has been appropriated. That detachment changes once Pepe is designated a hate symbol, prompting Matt Furie to launch a determined effort to reclaim his creation. I loved the motion graphics and the film’s positive outlook in the face of something that ultimately feels impossible to fully control.

It shows this is pre-Covid because it ends in a hopeful note about Matt Furie’s mark on the world as an artist trying to get back some control from his creation but no one in the documentary is ready about the fucking madness that will go down once Biden term ends. I wanted the 4channer guy so fucking bad and I want to buy Matt’s entire ouvre now. 4chan really is a disease.

feels sadge man The fact that the internet has the power to bastardize something you made for fun. Idk I see it a lot now where art is made and transformed beyond the artist’s intentions and sometimes in the opposite of what the artist believes. Then you see the separate the art from artist shit but it never really matters when the art becomes a symbol of hate and the artist wants to spread love. Just all around confusing times on the internet

I wanted to catch this film at True/False in March 2020, but it sold out, and then I just never got around to it until last night. Serves as a great real-world example of the concept of socially constructed truth and meaning. Watching Pepe’s evolution shows how a symbol can take on a life of its own once it enters public discourse. It was also fun watching my brother learn about all of this. An interesting doc about the rise of the alt right mixed with the naive and somewhat sad story of the creator of a meme. I can’t imagine what it feels like to have your creation taken from you like this for these purposes. The parts about nfts felt very unnecessary but overall an interesting story about internet culture and the futility of fighting the masses.

Best documentary I’ve ever watched, hands down. This hit me in all the right places, knocked me down to misery, and lifted me up in motivation again by the end. I have a newfound respect for Pepe the Frog, and a newfound hatred of the alt-right movement- not just for the racist bile they put out on a regular basis, but for ruining such a wholesome little guy. But, y’know, that’s why we fight. To challenge those beliefs, help the country, and Make Pepe feel good man Again!

An honestly tragic story how a well meaning artist work was twisted in an awful way. As most who grew up with the internet I knew of the meme of Pepe the frog, but I didn’t know how far down the internet rabbit hole this meme went. It has beautiful animated segments of Pepe and his friends. Well paced and a variety of perspectives from those with ties to Pepe and the internet at large. Definitely worth watching for appreciators of all form of art and what a force the internet can be for better or worse.

Really interesting documentary about how easily images and iconography can catch on and become things far different to what they were intended to be. Seems the far right has a habit of taking innocent imagery and characters and turning them into symbols of hatred.
-

It’s really interesting watching this film and looking back at 2020 retrospectively. Random journalist telling Matt Furie that he basically will never be able to get the “genie back in the bottle” implying that Pepe will always be a symbol of far right hatred. Now in 2026 Pepe is kind of just an apolitical reaction image at best and a memecoin at worst. Would be cool so see a follow up to this documentary

I didn’t really like how in certain parts of the documentary they were trying to imply it was Matt Furie’s fault somehow that Pepe ended up becoming a hate symbol. It seemed to me that by the time he was being used in that way, the scope was too large to be stopped. Other than that, I liked learning about the origins of Pepe and how he has morphed over time. I hope that someday he can be a frog again instead of a hate symbol.

A good example of a stupid idea with incredible execution. A documentary about an artist’s persona/avatar being morphed into a symbol of hatred by one community only to be taken by another as a symbol of resistance sounds like something you’d only read in fiction yet somehow this all actually happened. Fvcking nuts man. I found this on YouTube and it’s so funny that they rated a documentary with Alex Jones, artwork of nazi symbols and decapitation as PG.
