Synopsis

When four bodies are discovered among the industrial decay and urban grime of New York City, brash young detective Mike Reilly teams with ambitious Department of Health researcher Terry Huston to uncover the cause behind their violent and inexplicable deaths. The only common factor shared by the victims? Each died exactly 48 hours after logging onto a website called feardotcom.

Yes, I watch this movie every so often because I know how to have a good time! This movie is just so the absolute pinnacle of 2002 horror movie special effects that it made me a lil lightheaded. Or maybe that was Stephen Dorff looking delicious, who can say?

Universally hated, even I sneered at this when I scooped up the used dvd for a mere few cents at a local auction, but the curiosity of a revisit got the best of me and here we are. I saw this theatrically—I was 17 and didn’t really care for it despite liking Malone’s House on Haunted Hill. I still really like that movie, and Malone definitely has a distinctive touch with his nightmare atmos voyeuristic torture murder website movie… tossing movies like Ringu, Se7en, and Videodrome into a blender and adding a bit of his House On Haunted Hill style to the mix and it basically feels like a a way more stylish $40 million dollar DTV Hellraiser cop warehouse movie where pinhead…

More delightfully moronic than I’d been led to believe but still not very good, and not particularly engaged with its subject in the same way internet horror films like Pulse and Unfriended were. Biggest compliment I can give this is that it has an almost Italian horror ratio of incomprehensible paranoia to over-cranked hallucinatory mood, just wish it had more to actually offer in terms of its horror setpieces than dingy 00s texture (which I much prefer in stuff like Saw, Haze, House of Wax, Toolbox Murders, Silent Hill, etc) and cheap knockoff Ringu scares.

15 Almost entirely abysmal, especially after the relative success of William Malone’s House on Haunted Hill remake. Incoherent, totally fucking stupid, yet somehow overloaded with style. This may not be a good movie, but boy oh boy is it a memorable one. Feels like a mix of Se7en and proto-Saw aesthetics. And I loved how the titular website was interactive like a flash game. FearDotCom has existed in my mind for many years as a Blockbuster title that I saw on the video store shelves as a kid and I was never allowed to rent it. The poster is still incredible. Little did I know that my dad was simply trying to save me from a life of trash. Too late!

Seriously kinda pissed that the most popular review for this just says “shitdotcom” like wow Chelsea you really must be so pleased with yourself. I couldn’t help but follow up William Malone’s Parasomnia with his most maligned movie Feardotcom and I’m not saying it’s a masterpiece by any means, but I am saying that there’s a good Malone film here that the studios totally fucked up. The man has talent and his visual style is totally unique and I think that had this been an independent production instead of a studio job, it would have delivered the goods so much better. This was Malone’s follow up to House on Haunted Hill and it’s almost painfully obvious that studio execs wanted a repeat of that…

Right from the start this is a pretty infuriating watch. It’s irritating and convoluted, but the tone is too serious for it to be an amusing so-bad-its-good. Huge waste of Jeffrey Combs. Probably good fodder for an amusing *review* that dives into all the little things that are bad about it, but seeing it first-hand just kind of sucks. Just to pull one specific example, the titular website isn’t “fear.com”, it’s “www.feardotcom.com”. What?

This gotta be the funniest thing ever and the worst thing ever. And I don’t mean enjoyably funny I mean you watch this when you’re high or you watch this when nothing goods on to pay attention too and your too tired. Between being boring and a nothing burger film that takes the concept of the ring and saw but only if it was about torturing and kidnapping and hurting women which makes this slop. I think with this movie people just expected more and it had lots of potential, some scenes are very poorly written and feel bland and it feels like they mostly relied on the effects/cgi rather than the character writing or story writing so you don’t really care when a character dies. Nonethless it gives off a really nice early 2000’s tech vibe, the movie is slightly below mediocre at best but not as bad as others describe.

God what a terrible movie. It’s not everyday you come across a film that is so incompetent that it fails at literally everything, but that’s Feardotcom in a nutshell. Truly, there is nothing to like other than if you just enjoy laughing at how bad a movie can be. The story is complete dreck, being a weird mixture of snuff moviemaking, a rip off of The Ring and some nonsense about ghosts living within the energy of the internet. Don’t…

This movie opens on a guy going into the most unreasonably evil looking subway station I’ve ever seen. Then he behaves like a moron and basically commits suicide. I told myself at that point “Oh, it’s one of *those* horror movies.” I kind of miss the days where “the computer” was a niche, arcane curio that only weirdos and nerds spent much time with. I definitely don’t miss this odd little subgenre of “What if da computer was evil lol”…

I love this movie from the Udo Kier opening to the “Wait, is this Jeffrey Combs??” moment to the millennium vibes and the downright expressionist finale. Seeing so many German actors took me out a bit (I had no idea Matthias Schweighöfer has been in US movies that long ago) but it only adds to the special atmosphere this film is dripping with.

Natascha McElhone is the only person in this entire movie who is trying at all and even then she has absolutely no chemistry with the leading guy whose name I can’t be bothered to look up, and I was baffled when the two of them started acting like there was any kind of romantic “thing” going on between them.

Truly don’t understand the hate on this movie. This cheesy, early 2000s netsploitation feels nostalgic. The color grading is grungy. The movie is set in New York and has some grimey filming locations (apparently filmed in Canada and Luxembourg). Only took 20 years, but I’m glad I finally got around to watching this movie in its entirety. Super fun watch in my opinion. My only complaints are the lack of metal during death scenes and not having Christoph Waltz as The Doctor. I reckon the one Rammstein song and Jeffrey Combs was a fair trade…

videodrome if it was even more misogynistic and also absolutely shite! plot & pacing were boring, acting was awful AND there’s r*mmstein on the soundtrack (derogatory). triple homicide man this felt as good to watch as being put through a paper shredder. absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever imo, only sat through for the love of the game

When I checked to see how much of the film was left and seeing I had half the film to go I almost cried. I almost just turned it off. It’s boring with a capital B, and B is also for bollocks which is what I call this plot. Can I just say before I share my thoughts… The lead is a detective, right? A homicide detective? Isn’t it pertinent to his job to investigate a lead, say… Feardotcom being…

Unfortunately, I had a craving for early aughts horror shlock. I loved the aesthetics of this movie. I liked the super cool edgy website with the visuals right out of a metal music video. I yearn for the edge. The story is very convoluted and the dialogue gets real sloppy. What made me literally laugh out loud was the fact that the website in the movie is called “www.feardotcom.com”. I guess in real life there was already a fear.com. There’s the impression that this movie about the sensationalism of violence but it’s too silly of a movie to land any point.

Hilarious that there are only two kinds of reviews for this film: 1) “OMG this was unwatchable dogshit.” 2) The VIBESSSSSSS BRO I lean closer to Team Dogshit, but Natascha McElhone is always exquisite. So the smallest of bumps for that.

Strange, how good “feardotcom” is, and how bad. The screenplay is a mess, and yet the visuals are so creative this is one of the rare bad films you might actually want to see. The plot is a bewildering jumble of half-baked ideas, from which we gather just enough of a glimmer about the story to understand how it is shot through with contradictions and paradoxes. And yet I watched in admiration as a self-contained nightmareformed with the visuals. Not…
