Really looking forward to the next movie where Tyler Rake teams up with Jack Shovel, Kurt Lawnmower, Wade Wheelbarrow, and Hank Hedgeclippers to form the ultimate team of mercenaries: The Landscapers. I understand that these movies don’t quite work for everyone, but idk man, this shit is just nails to me. Sam Hargrave knows how to film compelling action sequences, the Russos know how to write stoic, gritty protagonists, and Hemsworth knows how to play a thundering badass. Simple formula, take my money. With rip-roaringly choreographed fight scenes and Hemsworth bringing an intimidating yet layered performance to our emotionally flawed protagonist, the first Extraction had a visceral soul to it, and it gave Rake a redemptive arc and a fittingly…

The action never reaches the absurd highs of something like John Wick, but when you compare it to the other measly Netflix action movie attempts, namely something like The Gray Man— Extraction 2 shines brighter than most. Thought the oner in the beginning was fine, but a perfect example that a one-shot doesn’t immediately elevate your scene simply because there are no cuts (or when the cuts are hidden). The real takeaway from Extraction 2 is that we need to extract Hargrove and Hemsworth from the Russo death grip. Some abysmal writing.

The Ancient Greek saying “know thyself” can be applied to many things. Sometimes it can be applied to putting the pen down and letting someone else write your movie, even though you co-wrote the source material. Maybe you weren’t meant to write movies. Joe Russo. I’m talking about Joe Russo.

Incredible action, worst writing of all time. Looking forward to the third movie where Tyler Rake has to extract his son from hell.

for a hilariously fake digital oner that calls almost constant attention to its ~50 “invisible” cuts (at one point it goes from the dead of night to mid-sunrise in the span of a few seconds?)… that was pretty cool. the first Extraction was pretty much everything that’s wrong with streaming “blockbusters,” but this one is stupid fun. the world is full of surprises. action star Goldshifteh Farahani!

Zoned out every time someone started explaining/crying about some sort of backstory to do with Georgian gangsters and dead family members (why are the Russo’s so bad at this stuff?) but was locked in for every second of TYLER RAKE bluntly ripping another human body to pieces as staged by this Hargrave guy who’s essentially doing Stahelski but with zero sense of class or style. Just pure brutalizing. Cackled at the one-two punch of him squishing a screaming dude with a leg press followed by the camera being rigged up to the skull of another dude that he’s about to slam headfirst into an active treadmill, which then proceeds to break his neck, fire him like a cannonball across the room (through glass), and down an entire story. Kinda sick to see expensive prestige streaming money go to a gleefully disreputable, generic DTV movie like this. full discussion on my podcast SLEAZOIDS.

EXTRACTION 2 takes everything that worked in the first film & multiplies it. Bigger scope with even harder, more brutal action and more impressive set pieces. The prison breakout sequence, in particular, is a stunner. Story is still uneven, but if each film improves this much, I say let Chris Hemsworth & Sam Hargrave go off and make as many of these as they want. My full review

Nothing like a ruthless and insipidly violent piece of trash to restore your faith in cinema.

There’s a lot to enjoy here. The action choreography is top notch and Sam Hargrave really knows how to direct these massive set-pieces. Chris Hemsworth is a consistent delight in these movies and the character of Tyler Rake is slowly climbing to the ranks of Wick, Bourne, and McClane. Unfortunately, stellar set-pieces and well-directed fight choreography can only get you so far. This movie is drowned in characters I don’t care about and the story felt as basic as it could have been. It never grabbed me the way it seems to be grabbing everyone else and I found myself mildly underwhelmed at times.

hands-down one of the most ideologically vile action movies i’ve ever seen lol it’s insane. insipid treatment by the filmmakers of any character who isn’t the white male lead who is comforted and forgiven at every turn, much like the boy we’re supposed to sympathize with even if he is genuinely the most evil movie child ever; he respects the uncle that left the family more than the mother who fought for him, and there’s never a real reckoning with…

Extraction 2 is exactly what I wanted the first movie to be. This is a massive step up from the original, especially when it comes to the story and characters. We actually get more depth with Tyler, his family, his sister-in-law, Nik, and Yaz, which gives the action so much more weight. And speaking of the action… that courtyard sequence was INSANE. I genuinely didn’t think it was ever going to end. The entire sequence is just nonstop chaos, and…

extraction 2 improves on almost everything i enjoyed about the first film the story feels more focused the emotional stakes are stronger and for the first time i genuinely felt like i understood tyler as a person rather than just an unstoppable action hero the action is once again phenomenal but this time the film benefits from more variety the snowy setting adds a completely different energy to the fights and chases making everything feel even more intense and chaotic…

This is only a 3 star movie at best. This rating is only attributed to the 23 minute long single take action sequence featuring a prison riot a car chase a train and multiple helicopters. This was extremely impressive.

Well I guess yeah it is better than the first movie but man, this is still just not for me. Chris Hemsworth is just not good as a moody action hero and this only removes a handful of the issues I had with the first. It’s still generic as hell and it really tries too hard in making me care about crying kids, but I just don’t. I can still at least tell that they are trying as the prison…

More video-game action than the first, and more silly, but there are still some really great shots. And it’s up my alley so.

Didn’t know there was an extraction 2 until Netflix suggested it Features one of the most insufferable, exasperating, poorly written characters ever in a movie. The boy getting extracted is genuinely so awful he kinda ruined the movie for me tbh. And ofc the script wants him to be sympathetic. The ending is cringe as hell If this movie ended after the 45min mark I might have given it a 4/5. The beginning is lit. It’s just everything after that isn’t.
-
R
“im not coming to negotiate” tbh, i only watched this due to joe taslim and don lee being announced for extraction 3. i was so ready to hate this, but in the end i couldnt help but enjoy it. the writing is so lame and generic it borders on being a parody, and the colour grading is lame and grey as hell. that being said, the action is INCREDIBLY well executed, including a 21 minute long take which actually impressed…

Sir Sam Hargrave I was not familiar with your game my apologies good sir. Some sick action, some dope moments and that 21 minute one shot was a thing of beauty. One of the most insane action sequences I’ve seen in a good while. Took me a few minutes to realize there were no cuts and when it clicked, I sat up and dialed in. Better than it had any right to be.

When there’s great moments, it’s really great. When there’s bad moments, it’s really bad. As expected, every action sequence was fantastic and almost well executed. The ‘one shot’ sequence in around the first 45 minutes was simply fantastic and it really is debatably the best action sequence this decade. There were many unrealistic and strange moments though: That part where he’s holding Nik from falling with just his arm, gets shot in the hand yet still holds on is just…

Some of the most fun and gritty action sequences I’ve seen. The one shots and motorcycle shots are so sick. Almost perfect action but maybe only one emotional moment stuck for me. The kid plays a dumb teen well.
