Golden Globe winning TV movie about the Sobibor death camp and the legendary mass escape bid. If you can get over some of the Nazi officers having British accents, and some of the prisoners also having British accents, and blue-eyed Northern European Rutger Hauer playing a Jewish Soviet soldier, you’ll find a movie equal to and perhaps exceeding Schindler’s List in its emotional power, if not in its production values.

I had to watch this 2 hour and 20 minute for an assignment that was due at 11:59 and I started at 10:20 pm so I had to watch it on youtube at 2x speed to finish by 11:30. This probably means I missed many things like pacing, directing, tension, and acting performances. However I still enjoyed the movie. It’s based off an incredible real life event so the story and payoff is pretty strong.

Escape from Sobibor (1987) is an ITV television movie based on the book by Richard Rashke that details the 1943 escape of hundreds of Jewish prisoners from a death camp in German occupied Poland. The film deals frankly with the horrific existence of the prisoners that aren’t immediately sent to their deaths. All the prisoners depicted here are based on real people, so Alan Arkin is Leon Feldhendler. This makes the day to day struggles all the more terrifying, but is handled with a thoughtful and sophisticated touch by veteran director Jack Gold. Introduced an hour into the film, Rutger Hauer plays Russian soldier Aleksandr ‘Sasha’ Pechersky, who was instrumental in the escape. His performance – which includes a growing…

This made-for-TV movie from the UK caused quite a splash at the Golden Globes in its day (an awards ceremony we can all agree will remain relevant and vital for decades to come) and earned a lot of plaudits for Rutger Hauer in particular – which is slightly surprising. Not that he isn’t good – he’s great – but he’s really just one of an ensemble. His character is innately appealing and heroic though, so it wouldn’t be the first time the awards-voters confused a very appealing character with a great performance. It’s yet another Holocaust story – but although we have been inundated with film treatments of such accounts ad nauseum for many years now, if we can’t devote…

One of the better Holocaust dramas of its era. Heartfelt performances and a compelling script easily overcome a tiny budget and some awkwardly staged action scenes.

Starring: The Wicked, Charming, Dutch Icon Rutger Hauer “The Great Escape” may have attained great recognition and gained a position in popular culture, but in my opinion, this film is not only more engaging and enjoyable, but the story itself is considerably more remarkable. A film based on the true account of one of the largest mass escapes from a concentration camp, in which more than 300 Jews succeeded, has a very low chance of failing. Add to that some great performances from established actors like Alan Arkin or an EMMY nominated performance by our very own Rutger Hauer, to relatively unknown actors like Pacula or Becker, all of them manage to leave an impact and deliver on their respective…

The only flaws are results of a TV production, not an actual movie. And also because the version I watched was trimmed from 180 minutes to 143. What a movie. What a story. Truly, truly disturbing and intense. Wow.

I think this has to be one of the most realistic, heartbreaking, yet potentially hopeful movie about death labour camps. There was so many times that had me TENSE because I had no idea what the Nazi’s cruelty was going to do next. Some of the shots too, a girl standing off the train then cut to her jacket in the clothing hut was so horrifying. I can’t imagine the horror of having to go through what these poor people…

Ok. Good but not great especially acting wise and some of the actors made “intresting” choices but the action scenes were good and the choice to tell there story was really good. Maybe a bigger budget would have helped but I’m not holding it against them. Not special just good.

Watched this as a part of my Rutger Hauer fixation series, and I really enjoyed it—I almost watched it all last night and had to force myself to pause it and get some sleep. I love when movies make me squirm in moments of tension, and the scene where the prisoners had 1 hour to sneak around and kill off as many SS officers as they could had me soooo nervous that they were gonna get caught. Of course, in…

The potential for this to be a good movie is there, but it unfortunately missed the mark for me. The story itself isn’t too bad. Some of the character writing definitely could have been better, but I liked the way it all led up to the escape. However, I think it took a bit too long to get there. There are big chunks of the film when characters are just talking about the logistics of escaping, and the way they…

A very fine film, done realistically and with good performances. The camp setting is totally believable, the conditions grim, and the guards and prisoners are all played well. Suspense is built and maintained, and the desperation of the prisoners is convincing. Somewhat like Schindler’s List, in that the true events depicted did at least have a somewhat happy ending for the lucky few who got away. Alan Arkin is excellent as the camp leader and Rutger Hauer is fine as the Russian soldier who plays a major role in the escape. This is an excellent film well worth seeing.

When I wrote about The Zone of Interest a few weeks ago I wondered whether the Holocaust is a subject that, in the vast majority of cases, only a documentary can touch safely. This is a long, long way from the chillingly oblique approach of that film and I think some people really won’t be comfortable with its TV movie straightforwardness, but I think it’s basically a success and a worthwhile tribute to the participants in this remarkable story. The…

I had first seen this at some point on TV and VHS in the 1990s. The rewatch went even better, thanks to improved video quality (and I believe, in my cloudy, alcoholic memories, that I had seen the edited 2-hour version originally. This time, I watched the circa 148-minute version. To me, it wasn’t a huge difference, but more is better, in this case. To deviate even further, I’d love to find the ITV 169/176-minute edition). This might be best…

It has a lot weighing it down technically. The writing and acting are a mixed bag, it has moments of terrible ADR, shoddy editing, and odd directorial choices. The movie is definitely dated, but the story itself is too remarkable to write off, the way it’s depicted being truly powerful and harrowing. Some scenes will certainly be sticking with me for a while. I’m happy to have watched it.

After marathoning quite a few Rutger Hauer movies, with a few of them being bad, at least his movies from the 90s, “Escape from Sobibor” was refreshingly really good. A Holocaust movie based on a very true story, which is where around 300 Jewish prisoners successfully escaped the Sobibor death camp in Poland in 1943, also called the Sobibor Uprising. It was one of the most successful escapes during WWII. With not giving too much away, “Sobibor” focuses on Polish…

It’s crazy how much history is forgotten by the passage of time. EFS is a surprisingly good 1987 made-for-tv movie. While avoiding violence as is typical for a tv movie it doesn’t shy away from the horrors of extermination camps – arbitrary torture, killings, mass shootings. Arkin and Hauer provide enough charisma to keep it engaging. It’s not the greatest Holocaust movie but it’s not trying to be. If you’re an aficionado of WWII this is a compelling chapter.

although we had to watch it for class, i surprisingly really enjoyed it. it portrayed the horrors of the camp well and was shocking to watch. the ending is supposed to be slightly more lighthearted compared to the rest of the film, but honestly the fact that the true number of actual survivors was a lot less was disheartening. if we’re being real, the filmed made me cry in a lot of parts as well.

Considering it was made for television, a very depressing and occasionally horrifying retelling. The acting ranges from award winning to… less than great but it doesn’t really matter as none of that detracts from the film’s impact.

Escape From Sobibor is a film about the 1943 revolt in Sobibor. Made for TV, its cinematography and editing creates a historically accurate realistic tone that keeps the audience grounded in the morally complicated lives of the prisoners. This film depicts each character’s struggles alongside the overarching organization, planning and politics of group resistance. The cinematography emphasizes this by often lingering on faces or using crowded frames to emphasize this group effort. The film asks, how can a person that…

A film that genuinely made my heart ache at how sorrowful and emotional the acting was. There are very few words in the English language that can adequately describe the sadness on display for this film, especially with how grounded it remained throughout the entire runtime.
