Disastrous, but of course an American production manage to turn the battle of Stalingrad into what is essentially an American hero story by subverting history and using its prominence as bait. You might be fooled into thinking this film is somehow taking a side, but that would only be the side of Hollywood. It’s funny how Annaud place the audience in Soviet boots, because it is not because of any sympathy, admiration or political alignment, it is simply because taking the German side would be worse in the eyes of a wider audience. Enemy at the Gates couldn’t care less about Stalingrad or any of the people involved. Luckily, I couldn’t care less about Enemy at the Gates.

Despite the tacked on ending, fruitless romance, and those silly British accents, this film is a terrific piece of warfare. Every showdown between Law and Harris is tense as all hell and the general look of the film distinguished itself from most other tired WW2 films; Especially in the brutal opening sequence.

(The Average Joe’s Movie Club Cast) Nostrovia to this damn good Hollywoodized story about one of the bloodiest battles of WW2. “He shot him on the run. It was an impossible shot … Vassili … You’ve promised people a victory I can’t deliver. I don’t stand a chance against this man.” Enemy at the Gates is about a Soviet Sniper named Vassili whose reputation as a deadly sharpshooter helped give the people of the Soviet Union hope during their darkest hours of the Nazi invasion. As a huge fan of Russian history of course I was going to like this movie about the battle of Stalingrad, but I love how great a job this film does of bringing us into…

“All these men here know they’re going to die. So, each night when they make it back, it’s a bonus. So, every cup of tea, every cigarette is like a little celebration. You just have to accept that.” It was, once again, a “dad made me watch this” situation. You know the type: historical, lots of angry men, very loud atmosphere and somehow always on when you’re just trying to exist peacefully. But seeing Jude Law and Rachel Weisz in their full baby-faced era was blessing.Truly the peak of cinema. Unfortunately, whatever romance the film thought it was serving between them simply did not reach me emotionally, I felt nothing. Honestly, if the movie had committed to an friends to…

He isn’t dead, and do you know why? Because I haven’t killed him yet. I have a huge problem with this, why is everyone speaking English? All the Russians and Germans are native English speakers?? I hate that. Please, I beg you native English speakers, watching movies with subtitles isn’t that hard, we do it all the time. Hollywood and its nonsense. Anyway, let’s talk about the movie. Again, my dad made me watch this. It’s a typical war movie. About the rivalry between two snipers behind walls, plus it has a sweet love story and a little “Challengers” vibe. It was too long, and besides, war movies make me sick these days. I’m tired of war, guns, massacres under…

I started watching this months ago, got about half way through and didn’t go back to it until now. I just really wasn’t feeling it. Well, except Ron Perlman’s English accent. I did enjoy the second half a little more, but I don’t think it’s a movie I’ll ever watch again.

Loved this movie when I was younger and it still holds up. Great battles for the 1v1 snipers only lobby. Hold the 360 no scope. The scenes in the warehouse are elite and the final battle goes crazy. Score is also very memorable and I dig it.

açılışı zaten güzeldi ama bunun üstüne birol üneli görmeyi beklemiyordum. savaş filmlerinde çıtır da olsa aşk görmek beni mutlu ediyor garip seks sahnesine rağmen evet… jude law tek gözüyle bile çok karizmatik sadece onun için izlemedim tabi. keskin nişancıların oyununu izlemek heyecanlı ve keyifliydi ne yalan söyleyeyim almanın ölmesi beni bi rahatlattı danilovun yaptığı tek iyi şey buna yardım etmekti. günün sonunda olan minik saşaya oldu evine dönmeliydin… 😭

M
A portrayal so offensive to actual soviet soldiers they petitioned for it to be banned and I do not blame them for a single second. What a preposterous representation of the Soviet perspective of Stalingrad. An inaccurate, propaganda filled mess of something that I hesitate to even call movie. This is a perfect example of when personal grievances (and or simple ignorance) get in the way of facts when making a movie.
-
R
There’s something here, and (relative to being a Hollywood action war thriller) a few of the scenes are pretty effective, but then there are scenes and lines and performance notes that seem planted throughout the runtime for the sole purpose of absolutely derailing a good thing. I mean what in the world was that sex scene?? And why do these soldiers on stealth missions have zero sense of stealth? I did quite like Ed Harris in this, though.

Ok, let’s break down a scene. Zaitsev shoots at a sniper in a window, and a helmet falls, so he thinks he got him. He and another soldier named Ludmila head toward the building to collect his dog tags as a prize. The sniper (we never see his face, but we can assume it’s Konig) then shoots the man who is supposed to be covering them – thus giving away his position; at this point, Zaitsev and Ludmila should pull…

Enemy at the Gates is one of those war films that has always stuck with me ever since I first saw it in theaters, it’s loosely based on the story of Vasily Zaitsev, a Soviet sniper whose actions have become legendary at the Battle of Stalingrad. It’s very rare for any big budget film to center around the events of the eastern front instead keeping all attention on the contribution of the western Allies. With the release of a brand…

“i’ve been such a fool, vassili. man will always be a man. there is no new man. we tried so hard to create a society that was equal, where there’d be nothing to envy your neighbour. but there’s always something to envy. a smile, a friendship, something you don’t have and want to appropriate. in this world, even a soviet one, there will always be rich and poor. rich in gifts, poor in gifts. rich in love, poor in love.”

The movie within itself actually feels pretty real and you get very submersed into the film. However, the script for the actors are just shit. I also realized after I watched the movie who did it, I remembered how badly performed the acting was in Seven Years In Tibet. And now it clicks, this dude don’t know how to give a script to an actor.
-
M
Not as impressive as I expected it to be, given the cast and the storyline. The war part was fine, but the love story was unnecessary, cause why does every movie need to have one? I watch war films to escape the romance that exists in every single movie and, lo and behold, here it is again, accompanied by the most uncomfortable sex scene I’ve ever witnessed.

3,2 Sterne.

Like most of the movies like this, the bare bones conflict is riveting. Two snipers in one city trying to kill the other. But the rest is a little bloated and dull. Gosh I can hardly write. Filming till the early hours. More fighting. My body aches. This is a good half in the background heavy eyes type of watch. Loved the sniper scenes. Great sets too. Ed Harris will always be mesmerizing to me and am always over joined to get any sort of Perlman despite his silver teeth and dodgy accent work.

I know this movie was cited as a major inspiration for the campaign in Call of Duty: World At War’s Russian campaign sections, but damn is that influence felt so strongly. There are so many scenes in here that they ported basically 1-to-1 into the game 😭 A really solid war film with lots of intense war scenes, nail-biting sniper battles, good dialogue and story, albeit historically wonky in every single regard in comparison to the real story, and sometimes comedically melodramatic.

Loved this as a kid, I can see why now, there’s some cool Red Army stuff but mostly pretty shallow. COD blatantly ripped this off and did it better tbh. Surface level characterization, Ed Harris is kind of phoning it in (although his character is written very oddly, you could say poorly, so maybe it is the material). Rachel Weisz and Jude Law carry this with their looks a lot of the time. Weird Zionist, anti-socialist messaging shoved in at parts? Bob Hoskins as Kruschev is by far the best part of this

“Enemy at the Gates” opens with a battle sequence that deserves comparison with “Saving Private Ryan,” and then narrows its focus until it is about two men playing a cat-and-mouse game in the ruins of Stalingrad. The Nazi is sure he is the cat. The Russian fears he may be the mouse. The movie is inspired by true events, we’re told, although I doubt real life involved a love triangle; the film might have been better and leaner if it…
