The resurrection of Judy Garland should be celebrated more than once a year tbh

I’m not saying that they don’t make ’em like this anymore; only saying that they don’t make movies that provide this variety of pleasure anymore. It’s true: that’s entertainment. Garland. Jesus. Grounds every movie she’s in and simultaneously sends it soaring. It would have been a pleasure seeing her as a healthy older woman. Sacrilege to say, but I found myself imaging her in a part like Maude in Harold and Maude – in an alternate universe where we still get Ruth Gordon’s take of course. Garland is so funny, so present so emotional. Also: Jules Munshin. And some great tunes.

The ‘White Christmas’ of Easter films. A plot thinner than tissue paper somewhat involving a holiday ties some glorious musical numbers together. But when Ann Miller stares down that camera and taps 500 steps a minute… when Judy Garland effortlessly belts Irving Berlin’s classic ‘I Love a Piano’ …. when Fred Astaire basically carries off a sequence that’s the ‘Matrix’ of tap dancing…… that’s absolutely effervescent cinema.

I gotta stop eating mac and cheese and chicken tendies with fries so I can move like Fred Astaire at 50

Very few actors have the charm of Fred Astaire that they could start a film off by stealing a toy from a child and still be the romantic lead.

That one sequence with Astaire in slow-mo while the backup dancers are moving at normal speed is some god damn transcendent cinema

cinema really did peak with these sweet, soft 1940’s musicals, didn’t it? there’s no plot here at all just extravagant dance numbers and pretty dresses 🙂 and i just think that’s neat!

why are half of astaire’s films about girls decades younger than him falling in love even when he treats them kind of like trash just because… idk… he can dance? like i’m SO tired. i was rooting for her and peter lawford 🧘♀️🧘♀️

I’m not generally an Irving Berlin fan, but Oh, I could write a sonnet About your Easter bonnet remains one of my favorite couplets in all of 20th Century popular music. Don’t know why. I love these post-war years of the Hollywood musical. While Gene Kelly, along with his collaborators Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Donen is busy redefining the parameters of physical and emotional space in the genre, Fred Astaire is busy obliterating the laws of physics. In film after film, objects, simply by their proximity to Astaire, become imbued with some kind of magical essence: they become living props, they dance. In Royal Wedding he transcends gravity and in Easter Parade time itself submits to Astaire’s whims.

toss toss, mix mix every time i watch this i forget (again) that judy doesn’t end up with peter lawford go watch the mr. monotony outtakes on youtube; the exasperation on judy’s face when the director cuts in the middle of a great take, the little stank face she makes to get a laugh from the crew, the way she’s totally perfect but totally new in each take

I just gotta show off my tap dance and drumming skills, let’s apprehend this five year old boy I’ve never met before for five agonizingly long minutes, I’m sure he has nowhere important to be. Never realized Easter Parade is just another misogynistic Pygmalion story pasted over a standard revue musical. Unfortunate that it doesn’t have nearly the characterization and nuance of a My Fair Lady, nor the showstopping spectacle of a White Christmas, nor the fashion sense of either.…

It’s a damn shame Garland and Astaire didn’t get to work on more films together, but hey, at least we got this one!

For as fantastic as the musical sequences are, how it is as a movie is pretty… okay? I mean, it’s not bad, but it’s also not great either, it’s very middle of the road tbh. Astaire is not really the most likable guy throughout and I couldn’t really get around to liking him by the end. Garland is quite good though, slapstick at times and delivered when she needed to. She was one of the better parts of the film.…

It was okay, sure he can dance but Judy can do better

Judy Garland is sublime. Barbra Streisand would have also been sublime in a remake…Passover Parade? In profile, Peter Lawford looks exactly like Richard Gere. You can understand why MGM planned it for Gene Kelly. And you can understand all the people who would have preferred that romance. But I find the Astaire/Garland dynamic channels a Pygmalion quality that adds an interesting layer of humanity. “Why didn’t you tell me I was in love with you?”

Don Hewes: A girl dancer has to be exotic; she has to be – a peach. Hannah Brown: I suppose I’m a lemon! This movie! My god! Writing this after watching it for the first time and I must admit I was tearing up right from the very beginning of it. It’s just what cinema nowadays could never be or even try—it’s colorful, bright, witty and just magical. Even if the story seems simple at first, it manages to catch…

Charles Walters is clearly not Donen or Minnelli but Astaire’s slow motion shot is peak cinema. Easter parade is Band Wagon’s less talented cousin, not because of the players but because there’s little plot and some uninspired dance scenes. However you got two of the most talented stars of the era and they have great chemistry together. Both at their prime. I bought the love story and enjoyed the ride. Clearly it’s no masterpiece.

It’s always a pleasure to watch any movie with Judy Garland, and perfomances in Fred Astaire’s movies are pretty good too.
-
M
This took me about an hour to be won over, and by that point the damage was kinda already done. But this film has so much heart and whimsy, it just doesn’t execute it the best at points. I always felt just barely entertained, just barely engaged. But that still counts for something, you know? The costume work and the dancing is some of the best parts, but the set just doesn’t feel real to me. It looks like a stage most the time. So it works the best, ironically, when it is a stageplay. Like when Judy Garland crossdresses. Also they have bunnies in this!

It’s kinda Silly, when Hannah starts in love with Don. What the hell, girl! You’re so nice, cute, and beuatiful. But, I’m still wondering why did you cought some feeling of him. Even Don looks older than Hannah. Doesn’t make sense, didn’t made me so happy with that.

A bang of an opening song. Fantastical colors suck you into plausible story of a young Judy Garland falling for Fred Astaire over Peter Lawrence. Plenty of camp and wild musical numbers. At times the singing becomes a bit distracting, but a delightful film nonetheless.

Feels like a test-run for some elements Singin’ in the Rain and The Band Wagon, but it’s not nearly on the level of any of those. Not without its charms (“Steppin’ out with my Baby” is one of the best musical numbers I’ve seen), but the plot is so utterly banal that it kinda drags this down.

Fred Astaire is always the most captivating person on screen, but this time he lost to Judy Garland. What a dear! Age gap was icky to me, but ik the role was intended to Gene Kelly (it’s so obviously written for him when you think about it) There’s just no talent like these nowadays. Bring back tap dancing!!!!

Fred Astaire plays an asshole. The script is terrible and the movie is overlong. If only they just did the really fun and iconic dance and song numbers. Judy Garland is amazing.

Don Hewes loses his dancing partner and romantic interest Nadine Hale when she decides to pursue her own career. In a huff, Don decides that he can train a dancer in a restaurant floor show to be his new partner, selecting Hannah Brown. With Hannah’s inexperience and trouble distinguishing left from right things don’t go well at first. But ultimately Don redoes the choreography to emphasize Hannah’s talents and they become a hit on Broadway. The plot is very much…

43rd musical. Doesn’t have much of a story, just good dancing. I think more pictures should have love squares instead of triangles. Number of songs I already have / added to my music – 0

I gotta be honest. I preferred Nadine’s show! But what I really wanted to see was the rest of that dog act that followed them at the first performance. When they all lined up and sat down! I need to know what they did next. 🐕🐩🐕🐩🐕🐩🐕🐩 I would rate this one a little higher on the plot compared to most Astaire I’ve seen, but a little lower on the dancing. With the notable exception of the drum song. That was amazing. Another fun movie overall. I wish there were a million of these. The Hills are Alive 🎵

How does Fred Astaire look lighter than air any time he’s dancing? It’s such a joy to watch. The slow-mo shot was soooo cool. Also, the headwaiter making the salad is peak comedy, I was laughing so hard.

Here for Judy, as always. Loved her in this, and her in that emerald green dress she wears towards the end is too gorgeous to be real. The hobo “Couple of Swells” stage scene was especially great and cracked me up, and love that she performed it later on stage by herself. Really enjoyed it, but also happy to fast forward lots of drawn out dance sequences.

The plot and characters are thin as anything – there’s the makings of a compelling character drama here essentially about insecurity, jealousy and differences in communication styles but just so many missed opportunities, particularly with the Nadine and Johnny characters who all but disappear from the film unless they’re interacting with Don or Hannah, leaving that portion of the story to feel unresolved – but there are some truly impressive and mesmerising production numbers (Drum Crazy, Shakin’ the Blues Away,…

A Popsie Favorite. Judy Garland and Fred Astaire are excellent, the movie’s plot and story are a bit weak but I love the musical numbers in the movie and the dancing is second to none. Fred Astaire moves so fluidly in all his dancing and makes it look so natural. Easter parade is an earworm.

completely understandable that Fred Astaire came out of retirement just to work with Judy Garland. They fit so well together ! 1948 Ranked “Easter Parade” is one of those films that reminds me why I love classic Hollywood musicals. The story itself is fairly simple, but it serves its purpose perfectly, carrying you from one wonderful musical number to the next with a smile on your face. Irving Berlin’s songs are fantastic from start to finish. There isn’t a weak number in the bunch. Fred Astaire has always been One of my favorite musical stars, and this film is another reminder…

Charles Walters may be largely forgotten, relegated to studio hack status, but he struck gold with Judy Garland in Easter Parade and Summer Stock. Their plots are slighter and their high points less grand than the best of Minnelli and Donen, but I love these two movies almost as much as Meet Me in St. Louis or Singin’ in the Rain. They capture that same spirit of purity, Technicolor, and uplift. I could throw them on at any time.

This was a lighthearted and fun musical romance that doesn’t really have all that much to do with Easter sadly! It was easy to watch and had beautiful technicolor. This stars Fred Astaire and Judy Garland. They were both delightful and fun to watch dance. Love Judy’s voice as well. I do have to say though that they had negative chemistry. I think the film should have gone with alternate love interests that were suggested. The story isn’t complex. Basically…

D
A wonderfully entertaining musical full of great song & dance routines but hampered by a weak plot and an unlikely romance between Fred Astaire and the much younger Judy Garland. Astaire and Garland put in excellent performances, as does co-star Ann Miller, but there is little chemistry between them and the romance feels strained and unconvincing. However, if you focus on the dance and music, there are some real corkers that help distract from the movie’s weak points. Worth watching for Astaire’s toy store sequence alone.

I admit to having a bias toward this film, as it’s a family favourite of mine passed through a few generations, but I genuinely believe that the film’s impact on audience expectations is just as significant as its influence on filmmakers. It helped normalise the idea that musical storytelling could be both light entertainment and emotionally sincere without contradiction. That dual expectation continues to shape how audiences respond to musicals today. The Astaire—Garland pairing is one of those casting decisions…

It didn’t dawn on me until the first few minutes into this that I should have timed it to watch during the Easter weekend. Ah well… Garland and Astaire has great chemistry, but Miller really stands out when she shows off her dancing skills. A feast for the eyes reminiscent of The Red Shoes, though not quite as much to savor. And a bit too long. But such detail and thought put into costuming and set decoration; I wish more movies today would forego realism to pursue this kind of heightened, technicolor extravagance. the dance numbers are exuberant, the story a little less so. something about the oversimplicity of love in these old movies just never lands for me.. also… ann miller kinda steeeaals…
