Zahler gets that the visceral thrills of exploitation cinema don’t land in our desensitized age unless they’re placed in a shocking context, and for the bleary-eyed, over-entertained audience, “MAGA Prestige Drama” is about as shocking a context as you could imagine.

Like someone get a terrific pulp novel and filmed every sentence like Oliveira did with Castelo Branco’s Doomed Love.Everything after Gibson and Vaughn car started to follow the other criminals van post robbery is pretty much perfect. One of Zahler’s trip to hells that so enriched by the amount detail. The one hour and half setting that up can be saggy on spots (and I could go without Jennifer Carpenter extended cameo), but it also has a lot of very good stuff in it specially acting wise (Gibson and Kittles are great as the leads). The film is loaded and that seems the bait near every critic has gone after. The first half is drawn on MAGA sign posts to…

Zahler’s best movie yet, in its way his JACKIE BROWN, an exploration of race, police power, class, and crime. As idiosyncratic and weirdly literary as it is vile. Any questions you have about his actual worldview won’t be answered but it’s an ugly, bleak, and often very funny little bomb. A nearly perfect po-mo exploitation film.

You thought that the discourse surrounding Three Billboards and Green Book was divisive? Let Dragged Across Concrete hold their tab, let alone their beers. Not rightfully so — no, indeed, this film is neither conservative, nor right-leaning, nor right-wing, nor alt-right — but it’s got enough provocation in it for keyboard warriors who didn’t really pay any attention to the film’s ideologies (and/or lack thereof), to crawl out of their crevices and have a field day.

96 A harrowing, vicious synthesis of S. Craig Zahler’s tumultuous abilities as writer and director. Easily his greatest work in a filmography both praised and lambasted for its moral ambiguity and negligence of explicit political representation. There are no excuses present in Dragged Across Concrete, his latest. Rather, he doubles down on the thin, razor-sharp tight-rope balanced across an existential void, tiptoeing between depictions of race, class, systems of media, and a changing world of inclusive rhetoric. This movie doesn’t endorse anyone, really, except maybe the victims of a haunted world, but then those caught in the crossfire are quickly forgotten. But still, it does depict the narrative of two police officers abusing their power in a fragile masculine sense,…

i really did go into the movie wanting to have a good time with it. and honestly my reaction to it is less ideological (though it is also that) than it is formal. i don’t usually ever make critiques like this and i’m still letting it mull over and trying not to be overly critical because i came in with a bias from reading Zahler’s interviews, but it just bored me to tears. it is as slow as bela tarr or tsai ming liang without any of the meditative qualities of those directors. i know the dialogue could be read as intentionally stylized, but it gives off strong self serious amateur theater vibes: example, paraphrasing: “where’s my coffee?” “i spilled…

Zahler’s typically pungent, stylized exploitation and novelistic sense of off-kilter detail and patience is all present but I gotta confess some of the writing didn’t do it for me. As a huge fan of Zahler (and having read enough interviews and novels of his to see some of this coming) I came to terms with the inherently reactionary premise of this long before I had the chance to see it and a movie having politics I disagree with is not a deal-breaker for me (especially if we’re talking exploitation), but the glee with which this doles out cringe anti-“woke mob” humor while stacking plot conveniences that cynically force the audience to concede some legitimacy with the aggrieved worldview of these…

The ridiculous-yet-realist abrasiveness of the way that Dragged Across Concrete investigates & critiques society’s cultural prejudices, is paradoxically so in-your-face that you might actually miss how deep its script digs, through a multitude of character-based explorations of mankind’s politics (one of them, the most significant of the bunch, being a camouflaged but ultimate fuck-you @ the political preconceptions displayed by almost every other character). The narrative itself is quite A-to-B-to-C in terms of its simplicity, but it’s exhibited with a fusion of long conversational sequences and quiet (until they get loud), slow, suspenseful, and horrifically authentic set pieces. This wraps the plot in a thick blanket of political examination and tempestuous gun violence, disguising a glacial contemplation on the state of…

A great exploitation movie. Mel Gibson has never been better. I would not want to be friends with any of the key creative talent behind this movie, but none of them are inviting me to dinner anyway.

I genuinely don’t know why people think this is a fascist or even right wing movie, when this is actually some of the greatest satire ever made? From the jump we’re learning about the material conditions which drive our three protagonists to commit violence for pay against complete strangers. Never are any real distinctions made between the police and the criminals, and if anything more contempt is shown in the movie towards the lower middle class police officers for attempting to stave off an existence that the black getaway driver has already obtained. To that end, it is that conservative fantasy that proves the undoing for these white out of town police officers. Visually we’re shown the scene of a…

62/100 Zahler clearly wants to be his generation’s Don Siegel, right down to inspiring heated debate about whether / to what extent he’s a reactionary. I’ve mostly been a defender thus far, and it seems clear to me that some of the deliberately outrageous scenes here—e.g. Gibson and Vaughn’s badass cops pretending they can’t understand a (nude!) Latinx woman who speaks perfect English—constitute deliberate trolling of his critics. Depiction is not endorsement, etc. But it really does feel as if we’re meant to identify primarily with the sense of self-righteous grievance expressed by our suspended “heroes,” and perhaps to bridle at the happy ending that other characters receive. Zahler still complicates things enough to achieve plausible deniability, but I’m coming…

It’s a mystery why this film isn’t more well known. Sure, it’s a slow burn. But it’s a really competent piece of film making. Tight set pieces, two great leads, and a maturity beyond expectations.

Too long. Sometimes the dialogue is incredibly clunky. Sometimes vince Vaughn is sleepwalking. But as the movie progresses it gets more and more engaging with the final act being quite entertaining

S. Craig Zahler really knows how to make a movie that feels like it’s going to be one thing, only to slowly turn into something completely different. Dragged Across Concrete is an incredibly slow-burn crime thriller, but the pacing works surprisingly well. Zahler takes his time building up these characters and letting the tension slowly simmer before everything inevitably explodes. Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn are both fantastic, and I especially loved how their characters are written. They’re not exactly…

Кто-нибудь, дайте, пожалуйста, Крэйгу Залеру мет 🙏 Почему у него такие медленные фильмы… Пришлось три раза стопать. A handful of scenes really hit a stride that impressed me but, the scenes of never-ending dragging dialogue that felt disingenuous kept me disconnected from the movie. Mel and Vince’s introduction was done in a cool way and I enjoyed the cat and mouse dynamic that started around the robbery that ended in the armored truck standoff.

just watched this bc of the shorts people made about the robber shooting the van they call him masked redditor i just can’t look at the masked guy and take him seriously even when hes a murderer lmao

a little bit underwhelming compared to brawl in cell block 99 but still enjoyable

Goddamn this was some gripping molasses. The 4chan middle school (yet somehow also boomer) mindset moments aside, this is a simple story about two white cops who can’t help but be tempted and overtaken by all the power and privilege American white copness bestows upon them. Not a second of boredom over 159 minutes. Greatest performance of Jennifer Carpenter’s career.

2.5 hours of a decent “crooked cop” movie. One of those movies that you have to guess who’s the bad guy vs the good guy the entire time which is fun. Some random scenes that really had no reason to be 25+ minutes long and coulda made this long movie into a normal 90 min Vince Vaughn special. Which brings me to question. What made Vince think he should leave the raunchy comedy scene. He did ok. 2.5/5 is fair, I’ve seen it 3 times now though. So 3/5 is more fair. Violent , really bad FX. Good way to kill time.

I’ve been on a binge of Zahler’s films these past few days, mostly because Zahler has a controversial reputation for being a “reactionary director”. Many people compared him to Tarantino, who is a director I cannot stand, so I was cautious when viewing his films for the first time. Both Zahler and Tarantino take influence from exploitation cinema, but Zahler’s works are more like slow paced dramas with exploitation influences, rather than traditional exploitation flicks. I found Bone Tomahawk to…

Achei fraco. Quase nenhum momento desse filme me cativa, apenas teve 3 mortes q me importei de vdd. 6,5/10

Not seen anything quite like this before. Dark and satirical, like Mamet and sad Tarantino sat down to write a bizaro anti Heat meets 2.5 hour episode of The Wire. Mel Gibson is excellent. Vince Vaughan always interesting. Never seen Tory Kittles before. It’s his film. Takes a while to settle into the tone and groove but once you’re in, it’s a must watch to the end. No camera moves. No score. Every set is meticulously minimal. Now need to watch the director’s back catalogue.

Plot is a thin veneer for vague conservative ideology. That alone doesn’t disqualify it from being a good movie, but it’s not a good movie lol. Zero point to it, one star bc some of the action is interestingly choreographed

Heat with racist guys, but transcendent in its reactionary vision, its exploitation, its breadth of scope. I find Zahler right-wing in the most self-effacing way. You wonder what he’s commenting on, who he’s mocking, what he’s saying. I can’t get over his shit

THE PS4 CONTROLLERS ARE OFF😭😭😭 The more I sit with this one the less I like it. Sri don’t feel like typing out a novel but it feels like the writing devolved throughout the film and we end up with a long ass dragged out 3rd act that I was just done with.

I would have liked it better if it were around 2 hours long But this is quite an engaging genre movie Specially the middle act is so tight Gibson and Vaughn as the detective duo are superb. I was also surprised by how violent it turned out to be.

Part 2 of my Zahler double feature. As a whole not as good as Brawl, first half is a bit too long but once they start following the van it’s 90 minutes straight of non-stop tension and rocks so hard

Zahler is certainly an auteur with a singular vision that he is committed to putting on screen. The stilted dialogue, the absurd violence, and the glacial plotting… it’s certainly a vibe. I think I “got it” more this time around than when I watched Brawl in Cell Block 99… but I’m not sure it’s that great. If Tarantino is Dr. Pepper, Zahler is like Mr. Pibb. Or maybe like Dr. Thunder. It just doesn’t really totally work when it feels…

Perhaps it’s because it has to follow a movie I see behind my eyelids in flashes of fear, but I was a bit underwhelmed by this film compared to Bone Tomahawk. Maybe it’s because I find the politics a little harder to ignore or maybe I was not really loving Mel Gibson before I even knew he said those things, but this one had an uphill battle of expectations it could only fight for so long. That said, what a…

Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn work well together in this dramatic, buddy cop, 70s film noir style action-thriller. They play things totally different and that’s why it works. They have two very different approaches to the same job that allows for a lot of good scenes together, with a bit of good humor thrown in here or there (but still rare). In classic Zahler fashion, the violence is gripping, brutal and realistic. The crime and heist scenarios we find our…

When anyone asks me if I could get a beer with any celebrity who would I choose, I always say Mel Gibson. No one has but if anyone were to ask me who my second choice would be, it would undoubtedly be Vince Vaughn. And my two beer buddies make a great cop duo, lots of good riffing back and forth. “Would you like me to mail or hand deliver your genius award?”

M
Twisted modern gonzo pulp noir. Gibson and Vaughn inconceivably mesh perfectly. And Kittle’s calm and cool performance balance the opposite side of the story as it unfolds. The supporting cast is phenomenal, especially the Zahler veterans. But the real superstar is Zahler. This guy is a freak. A glorious freak. His dialogue is gritty poetry, his shot framing and lighting is bonkers, the violence is disturbingly realistic, the pacing could induce psychosis, but all those ingredients are what make this crazy cocktail work. 2018 Releases Ranked

From the name alone I was geared up for some schlocky run of the mill action thriller, but this is anything but that. Instead what we get is a stripped down in real time crime procedural with no music and little flair. It’s a minimalist crime drama in the vein of Heat. What could very well be a boring and bloated 2:30, I found the writing and the characters engaging. I was quickly able to settle in and relax with…

M
Slow-burn crime thriller with a surprisingly great Mel Gibson performance. Emphasis on “slow”. A running time of nearly two hours and forty minutes is just way too long for this type of movie for me. (One detail I liked is that to show that a character has gone from poor to rich, their standard black Xbox controller is changed to a transparent blue one.)

Lots of scenes of Gibson and Vaughn doing very little peppered with visceral violence and existential moral decisions. Electric.

I was recommended this film by two people who have pretty good taste in film as “one of the best films made in the past decade”, it’s not terrible but it’s pretty weak and derivative without offering anything that subversive or new as a counterweight. In a weird spot with this movie. I guess I’ll start with the things I’m less unsure of. This movie really starts at the bank robbery. Up to that point, it is mostly long stretches of being in a car talking about doing rhe thing theyre gonna do. In a cast of characters that are both generally unlikeable but also not that deep (or at least not beyond the cliche of their archetype as to be worth spending a tremendous…

Kind of plays out like you’re reading a book rather than watching an action movie… Finale is great, epilogue seemed unnecessary but so do a lot of scenes in this film. Soooo much filler Will be watching again and reevaluating my rating 🙂

T
The only good writing in this movie was the t-Rex monologue. The masked guys ended up being complete fucking idiots because I guess you throw the door open and crawl on out when there’s a sniper trained right on you and ask the guy who killed your partner for a ride to the hospital. Nice cinematography. Gore was excessive. Relied heavily on shock value. Movie could be cut down a solid 30 minutes with how much filler they threw in here. Another mediocre Mel Gibson performance.

I’ve finally finished S. Craig Zahler’s filmography, and I gotta say, while there are things that hold this back for me, it’s probably my favorite. I’ve never seen anyone direct violence the way he does, as if someone being shot in the head is just as important as taking a step or blinking, it happens in a flash and we’re barely given any time to breathe about what we just witnessed, no matter the character or situation. This is consistent…

Zahler #2. Still enjoy the slow burn, though not as much as Bone Tomahawk where it really jelled with the time period. Great cast with an deliciously bizarre highlight – Fred Melamed as the bank manager. The pieces all feel poised to deliver something really special… but never really transcend the genre. Solid and strange but ultimately I don’t think Zahler has a unique POV here which holds it back from the company of movies it seems to be reaching for.

First time in a while where I don’t really know how I truly feel about a movie. Quite the bleak and provocative exploitation movie, that I feel like doesn’t have much respect for the political themes that it’s tip toeing around. While I do agree that this movie at heart isn’t necessarily right wing, the way it handles itself when progressing the plot and motives of the main two cops can seem very odd. Still don’t know how to fully express my feelings towards the movie, but I’ll probably rewatch and give my full thoughts on this.

Dragged Across Concrete left me feeling a bit conflicted. On one hand, it’s an engaging crime thriller with strong performances and an uncompromising tone. On the other, there are several aspects that kept it from becoming something truly great. My biggest issue is the runtime. At two hours and forty minutes, I expected something closer to an epic crime saga. Instead, the story often feels as though it’s stretching relatively straightforward material far beyond what it can sustain. I never…

A contrived, overly and unnecessarily MAGA-coded slow singe. It wouldn’t be fair to call it a slow burn. It was just slow for the sake of being slow and felt like a real overnight stakeout, as in mostly boring, with a few exchanges of florid violence and stereotypes. Probably would be more enjoyable at 2x speed and with lots of coffee and donuts. That said, I still liked it for some reason. It’s just nowhere near as good as Bone…

Maybe this is vacuous bc every cop-crime-process film owes a debt to Melville, but, outside of Mann, this feels like the closest contemporary example we have. Both in form and in its political content. And, come to think of it, in casting. Much debated is the heavy-handed Don Johnson scene – is it Truth or Troll? It elevates its own kayfabe: Gibson can only politick insofar as he plays the wounded male and Johnson matches this relationship, performing the traditional…

There’s that part near the end with Tory Kittles dragging Mel Gibson’s car with his own, both playing Butch Tavares’ “Don’t Close the Drive-In” on the radio (basically an excuse to further showcase this movie’s great original music), which just might be one of my favorite moments in recent memory. Weirdly enough, I find myself slightly comparing it to the train ride in Spirited Away, where one takes a second to really feel the world and atmosphere that’s been created.…

Yes, a film starring massive fuckwits, playing dangerous fuckwits, why bother? Well, I like watching movies. The two top billed actors is what has put me off watching this for so long. It’s a slow burn crime drama, with bursts of ultraviolence (those poor bags of chips). Two cops that refuse to play nice when arresting people, are suspended and follow a big time criminal, chasing a big pay day so they don’tneed to be cops anymore. This has some…

Atípico policial, construido a base de largos diálogos, con personajes cuya procesión va por dentro e historias paralelas que aparentemente no tienen conexión, pero que el director hábilmente une para lograr el clímax de la película. Muy buena

95 You could spend hours i feel dissecting out of the criminals who is the most morally fair which is part of the intrigue to such a bizarrely fascinating film. No matter how much Zahler states that his work is not political, he at least could acknowledge the fact that regardless of intentionality the film can certainly be seen as political. I honestly think this can be seen as a left-leaning film that displays that violence has no connection to the color of your skin and that greed can corrupt any regardless of how you feel about violence or political issues in America.

Two hours of people talking in cars has absolutely no right to be this gripping. Dragged Across Concrete is deliberately slow, but every conversation feels like it’s tightening a screw. When the violence finally arrives, it’s sudden, brutal, and impossible to shrug off. Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn make a strangely compelling duo, carrying a film that’s less interested in action than the compromises people make when they’re desperate. Not an easy watch, but an absorbing one.

Massive eye rolling as this movie tries to get me to sympathize with not only Gibson’s character but also real life Mel, yet I found it impossible to turn off. Every single character is fleshed out (no pun intended) in some way making the lengthy runtime feel justified and not purely indulgent. SCZ’s filmmaking expertise is showcased and despite this cruel bloodbath’s unrelenting absence of any real compassion whatsoever, he knows his way around story, lens, character and tension. I hate this movie. I also loved this movie 😬

Jennifer Carpenter. I only watched it for Jennifer Carpenter, I don’t give a damn about the plot.

Me encanta el estilo de este director que, con solo tres películas, se alza como uno de los nombres más particulares del panorama actual. Aquí vuelve a sus señas de identidad, violencia descarnada, pausa y diálogos desnudos. Brutal.
- Synopsis
- Two policemen, one an old-timer, the other his volatile younger partner, find themselves suspended when a video of their strong-arm tactics becomes the media's cause du jour. Low on cash and with no other options, these two embittered soldiers descend into the criminal underworld to gain their just due, but instead find far more than they wanted awaiting them in the shadows.
