I’m not sure whether I missed something, but I genuinely don’t understand how people think this film “humanises” hitler. He is portrayed as relentlessly cruel even to the point of condemning his own people as weak and deserving of destruction out of sheer spite. That doesn’t feel like humanisation; if anything, it exposes the extent of his moral decay. And it’s not like the others gain any sympathy either. If anything, they come off as pathetic and deeply disturbed. Watching them justify killing civilians and calling them traitors doesn’t create empathy. Depicting someone as human is not the same as justifying them. In fact, it often has the opposite effect, making their actions feel even more disturbing Also, as someone who doesn’t usually watch or enjoy historical films, I can still say this is a very well-made movie.

How should we depict Adolf Hitler in our art? One answer is that we shouldn’t at all. But if we are I think a film like Downfall sets a good template to follow. Here he is a man, not a cartoon villain or exaggerated fantasy. Great evil comes from real people. Hitler had a charisma and was able to charm others, so there is no use pretending that he was hated. Nazi Germany was a society in awe of him and so that reality must be reconciled. Downfall seeks no sympathy for Hitler, nor understanding for his actions, but it wants us to acknowledge what happened. Truth and history matters. Evil must be first seen so it can be defeated.…

I really don’t have any problem with humanizing Hitler. After all, the only being capable of committing such atrocities are humans.

Tired through lack of sleep and physically hanging forwards, Swiss actor Bruno Ganz’s portrayal of Adolf Hitler is undoubtedly the most definitive presentation of the Nazi dictator in cinematic history. Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, this historical war drama depicts the final days of Hitler, largely insulated from the horrors he set in motion, within his Berlin bunker during the later stages of the second world war. Ganz’s portrayal commandingly monopolises every scene he’s in, and Bernd Eichinger’s screenplay allows the human drama to maintain the main focus of interest and beautifully spotlights the complete state of failure which the tyrannical despot wallowed in during his last days. Based on the written memoir Until the Final Hour by Traudl Junge, Hitler’s…

“In war such as this, there are no civilians.” I had a bunch of shit written down about this one but then realized CinemaClown wrote a significantly better review that covered just about everything I wanted to say…always a nice feeling to realize how basic you are! Downfall (2004) presents the last days of the Third Reich, mainly focusing on Adolf Hitler and the other top brass of the Nazi regime as they barricade themselves in the Führerbunker while the Russians close down on Berlin. The panic and hopelessness of these men, though they be monsters, is deeply humanized as they struggle to come to grips with their plight, although the film definitely does not shy away from some of their more…

A masterwork of breathtaking realism & historical accuracy, Downfall (Der Untergang) recreates the events surrounding the final days of German dictator Adolf Hitler in the Führerbunker while also depicting the fall of the Third Reich & Berlin during World War II. The film is bookended by excerpts from the real-life Traudl Junge, Hitler’s final secretary, and the plot itself is derived from her accounts. The best thing about this film is that it keeps the human traits of the Führer intact and boldly defies the conventional portrayal of Hitler in media which was controversial as expected but in my opinion is a brave, admirable & important attempt. What makes it bold is that by taking this approach, the picture reminds the viewers that…

It kinda sucks to know that most people will only know of this film and such a brilliant performance from Bruno Ganz as Adolf Hitler from a tired Youtube meme. Give this a chance and watch the entire film. You will be simply astonished.

A haunting portrait of the final hours of the third reich from inside hitler’s bunker, Downfall is a visceral piece of filmmaking and a car crash you can’t look away from.

Perhaps there is something to say about complicity here. Or willingness of ignorance. This film is more of a commitment to history than an interpretation of it.

This was really freaking great. It seems that people don’t seem to understand that showing the POV of Hitler and the top brass of the Nazis in their last days is NOT the same thing as painting them as sympathetic. The humanization and three-dimensional portrayal of history’s biggest piece of shit is NOT the same thing as sympathizing with him or portraying him positively. You’d have to be smoking grade-A crack to hear the way he talks about Jews and…

What stayed with me most was the strange contrast between the destruction outside the bunker and the ordinary routines continuing inside. Berlin is burning, civilians are suffering, troops are retreating, yet people in the bunker still eat, talk, and go about their day. It makes the end of the war feel less like a single dramatic event and more like a slow, suffocating collapse. I finished the film feeling uncomfortable, but I kept thinking about it afterward. That’s what makes…

Yeah this is truly horrific and extraordinary. Some of the most spot-on casting choices ever made. Bone-chilling to see the Führer depicted in a way that is neither comedic nor overblown.

having so recently watched come and see, it maybe wasn’t the right time to watch this because i struggled to focus on the horror of war and more relished in the destruction of the n@zi party. if you ever want to show someone how fuckin pathetic the far right is then show them this. never forget what they did and never forgive.

It would have been possible to find things out

compelling, rich, and gritty to a wonderfully uncomfortable degree. definitely worth the longer runtime. bruno ganz went all out for his portrayal of hitler, masterful stuff. it didnt feel like a pro-nazi circlejerk (looking at you, boy in the striped pajamas). cgi fluxuated in quality, but for me it was easy to look past that.

Staggering film. I could and somewhat do have my issues with it, but it’s hard to argue with it’s utterly bleak portrayal of the end of the second world war from the point of view of the top Nazi’s. On full display is the depravity of Hitler & Goebbels, from the dismissal of the lives of German citizens from them both, to the murder of his children from Goebbels, it’s layed bare with two absolutely breathtaking performances. Some truly wonderful cinematography…

this film does with the nazi leaders what the real world did with them, and that’s essentially let them get away with it for one odd reason for another. i’m just not sure how to feel about the depiction of so many of the people. it’s documentarian, you can say that in its defense, but if that were the case, why make a MOVIE about it? i just don’t know. i think showing “humanizing” hitler, as in portraying him as…

Such heady events as the collapse of Nazi Germany’s leadership and their state with it make their dramatization seem easy since what we appear to see play out is some version of the series of events themselves. And what a sobering depiction this is. The Führer, holed up in the coincidentally named Führerbunker, Berlin encircled by the Soviets, his armies decimated, his generals increasingly exasperated with his delusional, impossible orders, lashes out like a cornered dog, snarling that he should…

- 剧情简介
- In April of 1945, Germany stands at the brink of defeat with the Russian Army closing in from the east and the Allied Expeditionary Force attacking from the west. In Berlin, capital of the Third Reich, Adolf Hitler proclaims that Germany will still achieve victory and orders his generals and advisers to fight to the last man. When the end finally does come, and Hitler lies dead by his own hand, what is left of his military must find a way to end the killing that is the Battle of Berlin, and lay down their arms in surrender.
