I’m blurting this review out just minutes after watching. Something I don’t normally do, but I just can’t contain myself, and know I’m going to have to re-watch more than once to write a proper one. Please excuse the ramblings. Dogville has been hanging over my head for a while now. As per my usual practice, I tried to avoid any pre knowledge. All I knew is that a: it was Lars Von Trier, b: it was 3 hours long, c: it starred Nicole Kidman, and d: worst of all, it had ShakyCam. Not a good start. I have a mixed history with Von Trier, and I’ve only seen two of his films, Melancholia, which I quite liked, but was…

This film made to me happy to hear that children were about to be murdered in front of their mother. I don’t know how to feel about that.

“Her suffering had created something of value.” “Just do what the others do.” If there is a right way to exert power (social, political, economic, artistic), one that doesn’t include dishing out untold agony to the poorest among us, we haven’t seen it yet. How well-meaning we might be doesn’t seem to matter. I think Von Trier includes himself and his work in this assessment.

I don’t care what the crew tab says, I’m convinced the same person who does the cameras for The Office also works for Lars sometimes.

“my god, can’t you see how condescending you are when you say that? i mean you have, you have this preconceived notion that nobody, listen, that nobody can possibly attain the same high ethical standards as you, so you exonerate them. i cannot, i cannot think of anything more arrogant than that.” grace really reminds me of myself. the film shows everyone ringing the bell and leaving her gifts. and the voiceover says that grace has found friends in dogville.…

I don’t know how to feel. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around it for the last two hours and to think of smth that can summarise it in a few words so that I can reread it later and re-experience what I felt initially. The thought that came to me after watching Dogville is that we are so sure we are doing the right thing, but it’s just righteous blindness that makes us decide other people’s destinies. It made me sick to my stomach. Amazing set tho

There’s almost nothing more frustrating than a director who has a command of the form and a clear disdain for women. I can’t help but think, “What a waste.” Yes, the soundstage, chalk outlines idea is “interesting”; yes, there is a powerhouse cast of historic actors working in semi-unconventional ways; but when anything borderline intriguing comes up against something as intellectually dull as misanthropy and/or misogyny disguised as depth or true provocation, it’s a fucking joke. Talk about the redemptive…

This is a tough film for me to fully grasp how I feel about it. I think that it’s an interesting look at morality and human nature that is obviously meant to leave you feeling conflicted. The choice of having the set be like a play and putting the sole focus on the characters actions was a unique choice that I think worked for what he was going for. For me, the second half of the film is where I…

most unrealistic part of this is that grace refused to go with her father at first and defended their actions. i wouldve been GONE, kill them all kill them all

There is some psychological to be said about this, but to say all that I would have to think about the movie again… and I really don’t want to do that

This was an incredible watch, I’ve never seen a more creative set like this before. The lack of walls instead made up for by the nature of the people themselves, the display of noxious corruption that takes effect even in youth, and the disturbing hive mind of the citizens of Dogville were my favourite details. The dichotomy of it all was fantastic. The ending scenes, where all it took to change unyielding morals placed onto others was the light shifting…

Really like the idea of reducing a movie to its primary form — theatre and yet I still think it would simply not work that well were it a stage play. Also, one of the most satisfying ending I’ve ever seen.

The choice for set design being what it is just earns more and more appreciation from me as it goes. There’s truly something in a small town where privacy feels impossible, it can become toxic that everyone knows everything. In “hot fuzz” it’s a comedy how small-town folk think but here, it’s a complete horror. They unspoken horrors and rudeness of small-town folk. It’s also interesting when there’s a lot of Hollywood press surrounding actors who hated an experience -…

When the work is this great & unique, I don’t at all mind being beaten over the head with obvious themes & symbolism.

Such a strange and unsettling experiment. The bare stage somehow makes the cruelty feel even more exposed because there’s nowhere for the characters to hide behind. It starts as a story about one woman seeking refuge and slowly becomes a rather brutal study of how quickly morality disappears when people realise there are no consequences. The film keeps asking how much suffering a person can endure before kindness itself becomes impossible. Not an easy watch, but definitely one that stays with you.
