This film was of a better time. When the elderly were able to bring a taser on a plane. I miss those days.

So, with my wizarding world marathon coming to a close and all of the Die Hard sequels now available on Star+, I figured it was time to watch them for the first time after seeing the original so many times. I was also inspired by YouTuber Cody Leach’s marathon. And, while it’s true that this first sequel isn’t on the same level as the original, I must add that it’s still rather enjoyable. It’s literally Die Hard in an airport, with a plane… until it isn’t. The decision to have strong action filmmakers at the helm, in this case Renny Harlin, was a smart one, and the Finnish director does a fantastic job of keeping the suspense and balancing this…

Everybody always asks if Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Nobody ever asks if Die Hard 2 is a Christmas movie.

Can’t quite recreate the magic sauce purity of the original which was to perfectly weave one of the finest ever turns of on-screen comically relaxed cockiness with clockwork precision action craft, but what Renny lacks in elegance he kinda justifies well enough in shaggy gruesomeness. It’s big, crass, gleefully violent, and hardly even makes half-excuses for its nonsense existence born out of commercial trends (“Are you pissing in somebody else’s pool again?” “Yeah, and I’m fresh out of chlorine.”), just has fun shredding the bad guys to a bloody pulp and blowing shit up, and luckily came out during a time when the baseline levels for that sort of thing looked and sounded pretty good. Catching a holiday flight to LA tomorrow which is what inspired me to throw this on again, somehow forgetting it has two of the biggest plane explosions I’ve ever seen. Surely won’t carry those images with me into tomorrow like an idiot!

I need a Mythbuster’s episode breaking down the possibility of the fire following the plane into the air.

a movie that forgets what McTiernan correctly realized: robbers are more fun than terrorists

About ten years ago or so I was actually stranded at the Dulles international airport on Christmas Eve. To make it even better, I saw Senator Fred Thompson there and was convinced I was living Die Hard 2, absolutely waiting for the crazy military Franco Nero minions to kill us all. Although there wasn’t any naked martial arts practicing William Sadler, I did get drunk at the bar and contiously asked where I could find the Annex Skywalk. They weren’t amused. Come to think of it (and considering the ‘I’m trapped in a shithole airport on Xmas eve omg nooo’), that was a pretty fun Christmas Eve.

A movie so ludicrous on its face that the main character has to make a joke about how implausible it is that he might wind up in the middle of another massive hostage situation (with his wife’s life on the line again no less!). And you know what? It kinda gets away with it. I mean, John McClane should never be in a snowmobile chase under any circumstances. But it is always and will always be fun watching John McClane tell off pompous bureaucrats. (Also, someone tell me where to get John McClane’s shawl collar sweater. I want one. I want one.)

The original is a perfect Reagan-era reactionary text: blue collar white guy with some damn balls and common sense saves weak, decadent, sexually licentious West Coast types from terrorism, the news media, and women with careers. Renny Harlin’s sequel flips the script by making the terrorist villain Oliver North and a gang of right wing military psychos and their anticommunist, narco-trafficking allies in South America. He also ups the body count by hundreds. Say what you will about Hans Gruber, he and his gang only killed a few people and a handful of cops. Bill Sadler’s Col. Stuart crashes a full plane full of men, women and children.

A disapointment Die Hard 2 is a dumb movie, on like a B-movie tier dumb, but not even in a way where its funny because of the dumbness. Still at least somewhat enjoyable.

2 Hard 2 Die I like how Bruce is allowed to cry and be scared and get overwhlemed by the stress of it all and writhe on the ground in nervous laughter and stumble around crying out for his wife like a kid lost in the mall. Also his long distance boyfriend from the first movie got a cameo! I think faxing is a type of yaoi.

Description The man who single-handedly stopped a terrorist attack is now the only one who can save an airport from an even worse attack. My Thoughts The sequel to the first movie is a fun action film. Bruce Willis essentially does the same thing he did in the last movie, but with some changes. I liked the more heroic approach he takes this time, not just trying to save his wife but actively trying to save lives. There are some…

Um bom filme, embora, tal qual o primeiro, sempre tão tentando brecar o McClane. Impressionante. A única coisa que senti falta foi do John Logan batendo na minha porta enquanto assisto esse filme. Poxa 🙁 fica pra próxima.

Die Hard 2 is a 1990 American action film directed by Renny Harlin, and starring Bruce Willis as John McClane alongside Bonnie Bedelia, William Sadler, Art Evans, William Atherton, Franco Nero, Dennis Franz, Fred Thompson, John Amos and Reginald VelJohnson. The sequel to Die Hard (1988) and the second installment in the Die Hard film series. As with the first film, the action in Die Hard 2 takes place during Christmas, but on a non-specified day during Christmas week rather…

A sizable step down from the first but it does get some things right. For one McClaine is firing on all cylinders here with a decent batting average on the quips, secondly I like the characters that help McClaine, they’re a fun addition to formula as well as the foils, though to a lesser extent. Biggest problem for me here is the terrorists themselves and their convoluted plan. In the first one Gruber’s plan is simple and easy to understand…

1990s Top Grossers Marathon (1990 – #8) In 1990 this was big, dumb fun and, admittedly, a huge step down from the classic original. But today it would seem like the second coming if Hollywood released an action franchise movie with this level of technical dexterity, unapologetic carnage and character actor royalty making every role feel unique and memorable. Plus, it has John McClane’s incredible shawl collar sweater that I have wanted to own for the last three decades.

Die hard 2 was honestly a pretty good sequel, its not as fun as die hard 1 but i really liked the setting of the airport and the snowy atmosphere, its bigger and in my opinion, perfectly acceptable 🙂 Not to mention John is just as great as he was in DH1, spewing just as many fun one liners, and still trying to save his wife, and speaking of wife, holly is here and while she doesn’t do much, she…

Why the naked tai chi man? Why did I need to see William Sadler’s ass and ballsack? I thought it was going to build to something where McClane and William Sadler would square off…both naked of course! Oh no they’re naked they’re in the bad guy’s element, John McClane is in trouble! But nobody got naked again. This movie sucks, Renny Harlin is a war criminal. A shameful sequel to a genuine classic. Yippee Ki yay mr falcon.

I loved this movie as a kid, and to me it was just as entertaining as the original, but watching this for the first time as an adult…. jeez, this movie fucking sucks. It often feels like a parody of the original, and completely falls flat every time it tries to recreate the greatness of the original. Very much a “Temple of Doom” type movie – somewhat fun and comfy despite being completely retarded and annoying.

Never watched a Die Hard sequel by itself, and just like the third one, it’s amazing how well the first three work as individual films. This one is definitely the most reliant on the previous film, but it’s still a fun action flick to watch solo. This film is so absurd, and knows it. Playing into the ridiculousness with over the top action really works and managed to raise the stakes. John McClain is one of the all time great protagonists with insane plot amour. Bruce Willis is HIM!!!

Really doesn’t have the charm of the first film, the villain doesn’t have anywhere near as much charm as the first film, there aren’t any memorable moments like crawling through the vents or the duct tape gun. In fairness using the walking escalators to move a gun closer to McClane was one cool moment. Overall a big step back.

letterboxd.com/catgoblin5/list/it-was-acceptable-in-the-1990s/ I’ve rewatched Die Hard (1988), but I’m not covering it as a review. Die Hard 2 was one of the 1990 films I was enticed to finally see. Yes, Die Hard is a good film, with the argument about whether its a Christmas film or not obnoxious for me to the point a lot of people need to get out more. Yes, its not the most festive of Christmas set films, but its a waste of an article to…

Really good sequel. It does a great job of keeping what worked in the first movie while changing the setting. I liked putting John McClane in an airport because it creates a different kind of tension and gives him another place to get trapped. Bruce Willis is still great and his sarcastic attitude makes the movie so fun to watch. The action is bigger this time and some of the set pieces are really impressive. Not as good as the first one but still a great action movie.

- Synopsis
- One year after his heroics in Los Angeles, John McClane is an off-duty cop who is the wrong guy in the wrong place at the wrong time. On a snowy Christmas Eve, as he waits for his wife's plane to land at Washington Dulles International Airport, terrorists take over the air traffic control system in a plot to free a South American army general and drug smuggler being flown into the US to face drug charges. It's now up to McClane to take on the terrorists, while coping with an inept airport police chief, an uncooperative anti-terrorist squad, and the life of his wife and everyone else trapped in planes circling overhead.
