Danny DeVito’s character is named Buddy Hall. So his family are the Halls. And Matthew Broderick’s character does not like Buddy Hall, you see. Ergo, he wants to deck the Halls. Ho ho ho. The title is at least representative of the level of humor throughout, which includes camel spit, a scene all about kinkshaming a cop who likes to wear women’s underwear, and a joke where DeVito and Broderick ogle and catcall their own teenage daughters. In a Christmas movie! Maybe it’s just me, but I find it impossible to watch a movie starring middle-aged Matthew Broderick as an unbearably milquetoast suburbanite without wondering what Ferris Bueller would have thought of it. Can you imagine how sad this movie would make Ferris? He would be devastated.

If someone told me a primitive version of AI had been asked to write a Christmas movie and this was the result, I would believe it. There is not a single relatable character in this entire film and for a movie made about the season of giving all it can do is take any Christmas spirit from you. This is a film that the actors should have donated their paychecks to the Salvation Army or some other charity because no one earned a dime with their performances here. A reprehensible holiday film in every way.

I think that a lot of this rides on how much you like Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito. I think outside of them and a few of the other cast members that showed up throughout, that was about all that there was here for me to enjoy. The story is weird and flimsy at best, some jokes are super bad and cringy (the “Who’s your daddy?” near the end was just ick), and most of this just ultimately falls flat. I thought it was tolerable overall, but I certainly won’t be adding to my Christmas rotation. Pass.

Crazy Xmas disaster movie isn’t as funny as others. Crazy plot that slacks off at points, plenty of laughs for young and old and a nice message but it gets a bit weird at the end (really, does everyone turn up?! This whole “seen from space” idea is weird too!) I wished it was a bit different rather than just the lights too. It is worth seeing just for the lights by the way!
