“Son, you got too much hate in you.” Vengeance trails. Lee Van Cleef in his “solo album” phase, proving he can carry the genre on his tired back if he needs to. Opens like a horror movie with four black clad killers murdering a homesteader and assaulting his wife and daughter under the cover of rain and darkness. But the surviving young son has seen it all, including distinct markings and jewelry on the killers. We get a quick “growing up” montage and the young boy is now big strong boy (and dead-shot) Bill Mecita (John Phillip Law). Nearby, Ryan (Van Cleef) is freed from the chain gang after 15 years, with his own score to settle with old frenemies.…

The Years of Lead – Book Out Now! “I haven’t been around here in a while. Everything’s changed.” Three reasons to watch this one: Lee Van Cleef, Ennio Morricone, and Carlo Carlini (cinematographer probably best known for his work with Fellini on La Strada and I Vitelloni). Surprise surprise: they all deliver the goods. Van Cleef is at his peak coming off the tail end of the Dollars Trilogy and The Big Gundown, and his sneer pierces through his mustache to guard a world-weary vulnerability. Morricone is also coming off the highs of the Dollars Trilogy and The Big Gundown, and here he creates another banger central theme with a haunting earworm of a choral refrain that Tarantino would re-purpose…

Spaghetti western that should be mentioned in the same breath as A Fistful Of Dollars, Django, Keoma, and The Big Gundown. It does have one thing those other don’t have. The best title. Ever. (The English title that is. The Italian title is a bit boring).

Lee Van Cleef basically adopts a revenge obsessed cowboy and bonds over revengefull murder. And I call it cinema.

A young boy watches his entire family get murdered. He memorizes every single detail about the men. He grows up with only one goal: kill every one of them. On his way, he encounters an old outlaw (Lee Van Cleef) who is after the same men. This one has major Sergio Leone vibes, and not just because it was common at this time. For one, it’s the same screenwriter (Luciano Vincenzoni) as The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966). It also features more than a few actors from Leone films. And, it has an memorable score from Ennio Morricone. Though director Giulio Petroni is no Leone, he certainly does a credible and efficient job. Lee Van Cleef is an…

Revenge like ripples in a pond. Lee Van Cleef always a badass but maybe never this cool, (almost) always one step ahead of everyone else. I love that the men who were thieves, rapists, and murderers become business owners and politicians (viva l’Italia!). I love the shocking burst of non-diegetic music when the piano player hits the key to signal the start of the first showdown. I love the nondescript settings that take on a supernatural quality when a dust storm starts up right at the climactic gun battle. I love this movie. Bumped up a half star from last year for finally getting to see it on a big screen. Even bowdlerized, the wordless opening section that ends with a stylized montage of John Phillip Law firing guns remains a powerful and economic set-up for the very tight, clever revenge arc that follows.

The opening scenes in this film are pretty harrowing, with a family being slaughtered in front of a young boy, who ends up haunted by the little details he remembers as he grows into adulthood. A tattooed torso, a distinctive earring, a facial scar, and a fourth man who carried Bill to safety, who wore a skull necklace. Revenge is the name of the game in Giulio Petroni’s film, revenge against a gang of men who killed his father, raped his mother and teenage sister, and burnt the family home to the ground. Those 15 years between the massacre and the boy becoming a man have been used wisely. He’s a crack shot with every kind of gun imaginable, eager…

One of the few non-Leone spaghetti westerns that comes close to Leone’s knack for purely visual storytelling, and doesn’t get bogged down in a lot of dry dialogue. So much of the movie is made up of expressionistic closeups – a face, a gun, another face, dust, a bullet, etc. And the dialogue, in the rare cases when it does happen, is terse, clever, and often funny. Lee Van Cleef gives maybe his greatest performance, but the only drag on the picture comes in the form of John Phillip Law, who comes close (but not close enough) to being a parody of a dopey cowboy hero. He looks cool, but his ridiculous cowboy twang and lack of screen presence compared to Van Cleef will make you wish someone like Clint Eastwood or Franco Nero were in his boots instead.

Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law leads this very good Western about a man (Law) who join forces with an exconvict (Cleef) to seek vengeance for the men who killed his entire family. As you may get by the premise, the film is filled with tropes to the point for the most part I was worried I was going to feel bored, but instead towards the end I was having some good fun and there are some great banter between Cleef and Law that makes the film much entertaining. Speaking of which, performances here are for the most part are great. Again, John and Lee have a nice chemistry and Luigi Pistilli makes for a compelling villain. Ennio Morricone’s…

I regret that I have but one life to lose to revenge. Nathan Hale said something like that, right? No? Maybe it’s better to let the original trailer tag line of “Death Rides a Horse” speak for itself: “When you’ve waited 15 years to find a man, it’s a shame you can only kill him once.” Giulio Petroni’s oft-overlooked spaghetti Western was serving up revenge cold long before Quentin Tarantino appropriated many of its plot and style beats in “Kill Bill.” “Death” stars Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law as two men chasing down the same horde of baddies to shoot up with some retributive justice. Cleef – after they framed him for a crime he didn’t commit, and…

Was hoping for a little bit more with this one, you sort of get the best and worst parts of the genre. Morricone’s score lighting the film reel aflame and Lee Van Cleef looking like a badass by cleverly covering up his terrible head of hair with a giant hat are no doubt iconic Spaghetti Westerns tropes, but unfortunately so are having corny ass soap-opera-level reveals and hammy overdramatic editing. Luckily we’re still treated to an excellent villain in Luigi Pistilli, plus the final showdown takes place in a roaring sandstorm (righteous!), so it’s definitely more than watchable to say the least. Not overly impressed with the writing though, I guess I expected something stellar after seeing it was a…

I kept giggling when Ryan kept taking Bill’s horse it was so stupid and petty, great ending also, I’m genuinely addicted to these old westerns

I liked it enough, it’s got good parts and bad parts of a western but it’s fun nonetheless, like really fun I will say the English dubbing made the kid sound a bit in the slow side I did make it 3 1/2 cause the editing was pretty odd at some points truly

A very pulpy western but fairly entertaining. Doesn’t even come close to the giants of the genre like Leone’s contributions, but it’s still worth a watch.

Fuck man this was a real gem, the only thing that made me watch this was the 2 tracks that Tarantino has used in his movies and Lee Van Cleef on the poster, but of course once you watch this movie you also see that QT got a few other inspirations from this movie for Kill Bill. Anyways, i didnt have very high expectation with this one but it only got better and better, it went from a 6 to…

This movie had everything I like but also the cheesiest dialogue I’ve ever seen. It felt like watching a 2000s video game cut scene. It was also edited almost like The Twilight Zone. However, there was a heist and a trap door and a double cross and a ton of action and a crooked politician and a found family trope and a pretty green eyed man etc etc so I’ll forgive it. Lee van Cleef strikes again.
-
C
John Phillip Law is such a boring lead but then you have Lee Van Cleef collecting his usual 300000000 badass points and Ennio Morricone serving one banger after another… so it’s a good time!

Watched this strictly for the Morricone score and Luciano Vincenzoni’s screenplay. A gentleman’s 3 stars. It looks genuinely great, Lee Van Cleef is doing the thing, and I recommend it. It is surprising that the very script I tuned in for ended up being such an absolute dud. John Phillip Law (a name I already forgot whilst typing this) giving an aggressively wooden lead performance is almost charmingly painful to watch.

It’s so cool with Lee Van Cleef, fun story, excellent cinematography, beautiful landscapes, dozens of horses, it should be in 4.5/5 stars territory. But it *clearly* never is. Pacing, a few small story details…. It’s so hard to make a good/great movie. I’ll watch this again.

Not as opulent as Leone’s or angry as Corbucci’s, Giulio Petroni’s specific style of brutal balladry rests on pomp and gravity abruptly uncorked by a throbbing image: Set in the middle of the saloon table, the lens crawls along to absorb the grill of every cardsharp and the hips of every wanton lady before a smash zoom washes the frame blushing scarlet with overlaid chokers. One of the great classics about the West of bandits-turned-politicians and keyed up Morricone chants. The magical realist effect on High Plains Drifter is clear. Kill Bill unsurprisingly sops it all up.

Uno reverso with Lee Van Cleef and John Phillip Law, all the genre trimmings, and THAT Morricone score. Great stuff.

A run-of-the-mill, terribly shot spaghetti western. Well, I do kind of like watching them, but with very few exceptions, they’re all so talentless the cinematography, the lack of blood (and any impact or visible damage whatsoever, which actually affects the immersion because you’re watching these goofy-ass falls of people who you can’t even tell what killed), and also the most primitive plot imaginable. The actors are top-notch though, especially Lee Van Cleef. Masculine dudes, not like nowadays. So yeah, it was not engaging at all, but overall it was tolerable to watch (though there are a shitload of downsides). 4 Tarantino inspirations out of 10 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Real mid lil Spaghettiwestern…. The presence of Lee van Cleef wasnt that on top as i am used to. It wasnt really clear to me why he wanted to revenge all his old gangmembers and the title of the film also doesnt really correspond to the story. The film has many iconical actors in it but they dont really play their best parts. The story is an ordinary revenge story which an western mostly is. It just missed a spark, something that makes it pop out when you compare it with other westerns. 5.5/10

A solid spaghetti western with themes and plot that I’ve seen before. Lee Van Cleef definitely steals it and elevates this film. Some pretty fun twists and turns. It was one of my grandpa’s favourite westerns.

“This guy told me a pal of his should be coming along. He said I should give you the horse, and a kiss. The horse is there, waiting for you. Ehh, now now, where do you want that kiss?” Death Rides a Horse is a spaghetti western that follows two gunslingers who both search for a gang. Both in search of them for their own reasons. I’ve been a big fan of Spaghetti Westerns especially with the Dollar Trilogy, John Philip Law lacks the same aura as Clint Eastwood, which I think hurts this movie’s enjoyment for me. The premise is a bit more simplistic with it being a revenge story but is added interest with Van Cleef’s character also having a revenge plotline against the same outlaws as our main character. The two team up and act as rivals trying to see who can kill…

What a delight to discover. This slipped through, blending in with all the similar covers. Although with such a great title, I don’t know how. The score is fantastic and memorable. Although John Phillip Law isn’t the most charismatic lead. Thankfully Lee Van Cleef and Luigi Pistilli add the heft this needs. The opening rain soaked sequence is dark and heavy. The middle is less lively, but when we reach the finale with its climatic dust storm and skulls in the sand, it’s a blast.
-
D
From its oppressive, rain-soaked opener to its triumphant, sun-lit ending, Death Rides a Horse is simply breathtaking to behold, stripped of all gimmicks and delivering revenge via white-hot lead; the title just makes it all the sweeter. It’s lean, grimy and satisfyingly ruthless, taking a familiar rape revenge setup and giving it just enough mystery and moral ugliness to feel sharper than many of its genre siblings. This is not a western about heroism so much as obsession, corruption and…

I never leave without finishing my drink 🥃 I’m of the firm belief that even the poorest of Westerns would automatically find itself elevated when accompanied by a Morricone score — fortunately, this also happens to be a good film on it’s own merit A classic dusty frontier revenge tale, with highly enjoyable characters and action. Good solid Spaghetti western to tick off my endless list !

Italians know how to make a good western. Fun story of the young and old trading headway with a great final duel. All the tropes you want in a spaghetti western
-
S
While the young gunslinger comes off as sort of a dud, Lee Van Cleef gets to be a grizzled badass for most of the movie. The plot involves a group of murders and rapists who go straight and become immensely successful businessmen and politicians. Now what would an Italian know about that?
-
A
If it wasn’t for Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef would easily be the coolest motherfucker to ever be in westerns. Rough patches within its editing, narrative structure, and pacing, but at its core, a strong revenge tale that captures a lot of the good elements within the spaghetti western genre.

watched while cleaning & with the Spanish dub on Tubi so take this notation with a grain of salt. Great visuals for the most part, but it’s definitely due to the anamorphic format, classic spaghetti western mise-en-scène, & the straightforward approach to composition Plots pretty thin with characters that do their job but don’t really pull me in. Perfectly fine background noise to help brew ideas

An incredible Ennio Morricone score and a lot of cool, memorable moments. Takes a lot of inspiration from Sergio Leone’s work, but unique enough on its own merits. Some of the dubbing was tough, but that feels more like a nitpick than a legitimate issue with the film.

A spaghetti gem. Very Leone-esque: an association conjured by Lee Van Cleef’s role, Morricone’s score, and plot parallels with For a Few Dollars More. A bit of Magnificent Seven thrown in at the end there as well.

The crudest and meanest movie I can call one of my favorites (this from my teens), what was missing from Eastwood’s “High Plains Drifter” is this movie’s oddest and most nervy influences from Italo Calvino (‘The Cloven Viscount’ somehow the book that pops into my head, both works as surreally calculating in their violence) and Eisenstein (“Que Viva Mexico!” as a giallo-western), a sarcastic western of switches, from the old-timer and the novice both who fail to communicate their similar…

“Somebody once wrote that revenge is a dish that has to eaten cold. Hot as you are, you’re liable to end up with indigestion.” A very predictable but enjoyable revenge seeking adventure. Only two thing to mention: 1. John Phillip Law either is not a good actor or he was sleepy the entire film. 2. The movie would’ve benefit itself with a more risky ending for Lee Van Cleef’s character.

Contemplated changing Shrelectra Shrlide shrin Shrlue’s rating to a 4.5 or making this one, but looking back at the recent 4s I can’t change any of them. The movie itself is what I wish all of these stereotypical shoot ‘em-up-bang-bang westerns were. No bullshit, just a decent amount of plot armor, cold blooded rape and murder within the first 5 minutes, no survivors on one side, hardly a heroic hero, sick ass kill clips, and good banter between some dudes. Definitely Leone inspired (specifically Shror shra Shrew Shrollars Shrore), and Van Cleef was still a total anti-hero.

In the annuls of revenge films, this has got to be near the top. Lee Van Cleef is so damn good and even pretty boy John Phillip Law surprised me with his performance. This was a first time watch for me, but I’m thinking it would make for a good Father’s Day rewatch. If you’re a fan of trap doors, check this one out.

Van Cleef has a great performance as an effortless bad-ass who takes to his quest for revenge with calculated control. Law meanwhile is a young buck on a roaring rampage who sees blood when confronted with the killers of his past. That they would be unstoppable if they could work together makes for a fun and tense chase against their enemies.

Whhattt I thought this was so good. I see why it got bad reviews, but tbh I’d be having a crisis too if I was beefing with Sergio Leone and then he drops a banger that u just can’t top. An ostensibly simple revenge tale elevated by Ennio Morricone’s goosebump-inducing score, stylistic swagger—including an opening that doubles as a sequence straight out of a giallo slasher—and one of the greatest titles ever. When you’re not transfixed by Lee Van Cleef’s piercing screen presence, you’re marveling at just how much Tarantino stole from it. One of the great “non-Sergio” spaghetti westerns.

I have faded, off-brand memories of this from childhood, and that’s probably from one or two of the Western binges I did after The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly first rocked my socks off. I first encountered traces of this movie in the Red Dead Revolver soundtrack and knew from the haunting Morricone tune that this would be a good one. 25-odd years later, I’ve gotten around to it. It’s hard to explain the fun to be found in seeing the right kind of bad movie. Pauline Kael had a go at it a few months ago in Harper’s in an article titled “Trash, Art and the Movies,” but I think she set her sights too high. The bad movies she enjoyed (“The Scalphunters,” “Wild in the Streets”) weren’t within a hundred miles of the badness of “Death Rides a Horse,” which is a bad movie indeed. And yet…
