Call me crazy, but I’d be really into a 5 hour slow cinema cut of this movie that’s just zombies shuffling around the mall and staring at themselves in dressing room mirrors and clutching quarters in their hands and knocking cosmetics off counters and eating the occasional stray human with no dialogue except for groaning and those ads over the PA system.

I always hate it when Roger gets bit after leaving his bag in one of the the trucks they’re moving, because up until then it seems like they were doing great and having about as much fun as one can during the apocalypse, just running around with your friends playing with guns, looting shit, driving a Volkswagen hatchback around inside a mall with no *real* danger. Basically the funnest shit you could do with your friends with zero consequences. However, on this rewatch it struck me that Roger has to die because he was having TOO MUCH fun. As he starts to lose it, he gets more gleeful around the zombies, starts shooting them with no real reason and eventually…

George A. Romero’s masterpiece. A subversive anti-capitalist manifesto, spot-on indictment of consumerist culture and desensitization, and an exploration of the social construct vs. human nature debate, masquerading as a nail-biting zombie apocalypse thriller with some of the greatest gore effects of all time, Dawn Of The Dead is not just one of the best horror films ever made, but also one of the greatest artistic statements from a filmmaker at the top of his game. I’ll break all that down in a second, but first let me ruminate on how reactions to art evolve and grow with the passing years, at least from my perspective. I haven’t seen this film since I was a teenager, and sure, even then I…

This review is for the Director’s Cut, which is, to me, the best version of the three cuts. It is difficult to pinpoint why exactly a film should be labelled a masterpiece. Most of the times, films receive this honour through tainted glasses of nostalgia. Now, it is always difficult to look at something you love so dearly with even an iota of objectivity. So it is with no small amount of trepidation that I say that Dawn of the Dead is a masterpiece. Objectively, emotively, doesn’t really matter, it is in a class of its own. Dawn of the Dead is a film made by someone at the highest point of his creative curve. Everything in this film is…

This watch was the fondest I’ve ever been of this movie. I’ve spent the last couple years slowly whittling down my blind spots in Romero’s filmography, and I think I’ve finally got a good understanding of how the dude thinks (/thought). The first act of this film alone, what with the pure & utter disintegration of first-world society, is god-tier filmmaking. Wish he had more from this era prior to getting real Hollywood dollars thrown at him. Also, how did I never know that Goblin and Argento did the music for this?? Watch: The Inferion Closet

From the director of Night of the Living Dead, the cult classic that single-handedly changed the landscape of horror genre with its effective take on a world overrun by reanimated corpses, Dawn of the Dead arrives as the follow-up chapter that adds even more elements to this post-apocalyptic world while further evolving the characteristics of the living dead. Capturing the devastating effects this zombie phenomenon has had on society & economy of the United States on a greater scale than its predecessor, the story follows four survivors who try to escape the outbreak in a helicopter before seeking refuge in a shopping mall, which they try to secure for themselves by getting rid of the zombies inside. Written & directed by George…

You’re hypnotized by this place. All of you! You don’t see that it’s not a sanctuary, it’s a prison! Let’s just take what we need and get out of here! Slow zombies are superior in every way and this movie is your proof.

Things I would do differently. 1. Remove the food from the freezer where they put the bodies. 2. Build the wall out of something stronger than cardboard. 3. Close and seriously board up the doors behind the built wall. 4. Seduce Francine away from Flyboy. 5. Take all the guns out of the gun store. 6. Never take off the fur coat. 7. Eat a whole ton of cheese.

(Extended cut) Unquestionably among the finest horror accomplishments of all time. A vicious, repulsive, and astonishingly well-made zombie movie that is both ludicrously brutal and clever. The fact that zombies are never the primary focus may be what I like best. The characters are highlighted, along with their responses to extended periods of seclusion and the mental consequences of ongoing stress. The opening sequence creates the ideal atmosphere for what you are going to see with its wild and unsettling intensity. A film that runs you through so many emotions—you experience panic and anxiety, followed by joy and euphoria, and then despair and a sense of existential dread. This is the quintessential zombie flick.

Legendary anyway you slice it. I always get a chuckle at the slow and boring critique of this movie… this opens with chaos before spit-firing into more chaos… then the safe confines of the mall take over as three folks with nothing suddenly have everything… and that’s where the supposed ‘slow and boring’ comes in, but that’s the point. It’s one hell of a choice by Romero to echo the mundane… Pretty sure we can all relate to that excruciating monotony after being locked up in our homes for 8 months with every gadget and amenity at our disposal. Sometimes safety and comfort are the ultimate illusion, a long time ago mike Tyson once said ‘everybody has a plan until they…
