Not 100% sure but I think this was the first JCVD movie I had seen as a kid. Now you can call it childhood-nostalgia or blame my fondness for post-apocalyptic B-Action movies, but I think this movie still rocks. Low-budget for sure, but director Albert Pyun had a real talent making the most put of every Dollar. For what it is, I think the movie looks pretty great. Since I only ever saw the movie on VHS, the image quality on the Scream Factor Blu-ray really impressed me. Cyborg was one of those movies I felt a little nervous returning to after many years, maybe even decades, but I’m very happy to say this still holds up for me. Is…

If you enjoy this review, check out my book RADIOACTIVE DREAMS: THE CINEMA OF ALBERT PYUN. I reviewed every one of Albert Pyun’s films and interviewed some of his closest collaborators. The Director’s Cut of CYBORG is all about an extreme shift in tone. The theatrical release is an 80s post-apocalyptic actioner about delivering a cure to save the world. It’s colourful, wooden and goofy. The Director’s Cut is a hopeless road movie where the heroes are hunted down by a group of Satan worshippers. The structure is the same in both, but in Pyun’s original vision, there’s a sense of hopelessness to it all. The real tone shifter is a radically different score by Jim Saad and Tony Riparetti.…

don’t know if i’ll ever unravel the mysteries behind how pyun is able to light scenes…half of van damme’s face in red and the other half natural and soft with candles right behind him and bright blue shining from a door in the background, an underground purple-blue water fight, the hot sun like a golden glaze over van damme’s cheekbones, a person in a memory-dream-nightmare lit up in pale white and nothing but empty black behind them, rooms where sunlight streams in even though it’s nighttime… it’s so unnatural that you almost have to believe it IS natural, but…not natural to earth, because otherwise…how? it has to have been elaborately and precisely staged like all great “perfect fleeting moment” photographs…

i feel insane every time i watch this, it’s so bleak and heartfelt and just this scream of helpless pain out into an empty parking lot void, and yeah it’s dressed up in bad actors with guitar names and is incredibly nerdy and juvenile but it never fails to rock me to my core the way pyun creates these horrific fantasy worlds for the sole purpose of 1. looking badass and 2. showcasing the beauty and resilience of the human spirit !!??… and then all the reviews are like “lol this is so dumb and boring”. but we’re stuck in a plagued hellworld and crying out for literally anyone to be our jean claude, who’s stupid now??

Ultra cheap post apocalyptic guff from Cannon Group and director Albert Pyun. The wafer thin plot has something to do with a cyborg carrying some information relating to a cure for plague ridden humanity. She’s kidnapped by pro surfer Vincent Klyn and his motley crew of bad guys, so its up to Jean-Claude Van Damme to rescue her and save the day. He also has some dispute with the baddies himself, which is painstakingly told in numerous flashbacks that serve to pad out the narrative. The plot is often lost under the frequent action scenes, which would be a good thing if the action scenes weren’t so dry. Outside of a scene that sees Van Damme doing the splits above…

“I like the misery” Me too. Perhaps the most traditional dystopian action mess that doesn’t even succeed in creating a memorable enough experience. Everything the movie presents visually offers a fun experience, but otherwise, it’s such a formulaic slugfest that I felt the harsh world grabbing hold of me and kicking me in the head in slow motion. Of course, a movie with Van Damme doing splits is always a safe choice for a night when you want to take life a little easier, and at the same time, it also elevated the star’s value when the film was released. The entertainment level, however, is quite low, as everything is straightforward, monotonous love for the action genre. This is a…

On my deathbed, not unlike Charles Foster Kane, inside the chambers of my own personal Xanadu, I will breathe my last breath as my arm falls slack to the floor and from my hand will drop a worn VHS copy of Albert Pyun’s 1989 classic that showed us a future of pandemics, artificial intelligence, and sigma males. The camera will close-up on my lips and I will whisper that enigmatic word: Cyborg.

(Pardon this interruption from my regular programming for something a little schlocky) A plague sweeps across the remains of a post-apocalyptic cyberpunk world, and only one man can stop a band of pirates from stealing away the one chance they have for hope. “I’ll take you to Atlanta, and you’ll give *me* the cure. And if you don’t, I’ll give you the horror show.” I was prepared for Cyborg to be bad … real bad! And while it is not good it ended up being a cheesy fun time, that I would categorize as Schlock Lite. (Quick Hits) … Spoilers: – Some surprisingly good production design went into this futuristic setting. Apparently, they took advantage of a couple of failed…

Got a new DVD action set at the G-DUB and this was the first on the 8 movies, disc 1… i’ve seen this movie a lot, just recently actually… but it’s one of those movies you can’t pass up, every rewatch makes it better. Plenty of misery to enjoy. I like this world! It’s weak in every way but a little bit of schlocky fun too!

Whips ass. An insane amount of screaming. Goons shamble around like deranged videogame NPCs. Peak Pyun set design and post apocalyptic vibes. Just an extremely cool movie with again, and I cannot under emphasize this, an ABSURD about of angry manyelling

Sure the worldbuilding is shallow, the dialogue is sparse, and fight scenes go on too long, but this movie is gorgeous to look at and Pyun’s direction is fucking impeccable.

Albert Pyun, the master of doing a lot with a little. I’ll be real, on an objective level, this ain’t all that great. Its pacing is all over the place, it’s in so much of a rush to get to the next thing, that it never lets any scene or moment marinate. JCVD’s acting, while never award worthy, is particularly bad here. (except in the fight scenes, or scenes where he’s in physical pain, he rules in that type of…

Canon Dystopie Trash. Teilweise dilettantisch geschnitten.

Incredibly boring, if anything. The flashbacks are weird and confusing, there’s so many scenes where nothing happens, the fights are slow, the characters have nothing to offer, and the whole thing just feels like moving through quicksand.

This movie is bad. It felt like a real slog in places and at only 85 mins long thats saying something! Zero charm or smiles from the big man, acting is terrible from everyone involved, looks cheap and takes itself way too seriously….

A Damme Pyuntastic movie offering a buffet of high-energy fights that are balanced out by dingy, memorable imagery: a little girl gripping barbed wire, a man crucified on a ship mast in front of the setting sun, a burning house adorned with bubbling keepsakes, and a silver knife against a pale sky to name my favorites. Vincent Klyn plays the perfect savage cornball to go up against Van Demme’s moody reflectivity which culminates in an incredible CQC Guns of the…

what a treat. this movie is bad, don’t get me wrong, but there is a momentum that draws from such varied sources. this is an amalgamation of a proposed sequel to Masters of the Universe and a fledgling Spider-Man project mashed into a weird cyberpunk post-apocalypse where everyone is named after guitar and synthesizer equipment. very in the vein of Zardoz, take of that what you will. I love movies like this.
-
M
another one of those movies where the lore behind it is far more interesting than the actual movie itself, so pretty much one of those ones where you don’t need to ask what’s happening in this movie but rather what the actual fuck were they gonna do with the potential 1987 masters of the universe sequel?

Pretty bad and that’s even by 1989 standards. Villain screams a lot, pretty annoying.

Cyborg is a movie that has grown on me over the years, but while I will never rank it amongst my favorite Jean-Claude Van Damme movies, it is an easy Top 5 where Albert Pyun is concerned. And lets talk about Pyun… he conceived Cyborg as a way to salvage the investment Cannon had already made for their Masters of the Universe sequel, and their planned Spider-Man movie. That will never not impress me. For Chris the Brain’s full review, check out BulletproofAction.com! https://www.bulletproofaction.com/2026/08/05/bullet-points-cyborg-1989/

idk how this has such a low rating when this is lowkey one of the more artful jcvd flicks.. the splits reveal is pure cinema!! and then they literally crucify him like he’s jean claude van christ! except he’s more powerful than jesus because he muscles his way out of his own crucifixion, which makes the scene 10x sexier and gayer than st sebastian’s martyrdom (the gay thing certainly isn’t helped by the fact that he previously put a woman’s…

Awesome camerawork & editing in this, I enjoyed the score too. But It’s pretty much JVD kicking people through a wasteland while escorting a half-lady, half-wifi router. There’s little to no flowing dialogue, & theres a lot of unnecessary slow-motion stuff, but this is definitely a step up from Alien from LA by the same director that came out a year before.

🅡🅔🅥🅘🅔🅦 Cyborg 1989 ★★★★☆ Cyborg embraces its low-budget and transforms into something surprisingly entertaining. It doesn’t rely on a complex narrative, the film thrives on atmosphere, gritty visuals, and a relentless post-apocalyptic aesthetic that gives it a unique identity. It’s unapologetically a product of its budget, wearing its B-movie style with pride while delivering exactly the kind of action fans of cult cinema expect. Jean-Claude Van Damme carries the film with undeniable screen presence. His physical performance does much of…

Albert Pyun’s Cyborg is a fascinating mess, a film that should not work on any level yet manages to stumble into entertainment through sheer persistence. It is a low-grade showcase for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s impressive kickboxing skills, wrapped in a story that was assembled from spare parts and wishful thinking. The acting rarely rises above serviceable, the world-building is threadbare even by post-apocalyptic standards, and the narrative coherence is… negotiable. Still, there is something undeniably watchable about it. If you…

Some filmmakers were born at the wrong time or perhaps ahead of their time. Albert Pyun didn’t pioneer cyberpunk but the micro-auteur’s passion was undeniable despite budgets never accommodating his vision. A Spider-Man adaptation and sequel to Masters of the Universe fell apart for Cannon so the director was hired to salvage sets, wardrobe, and money already allocated. The result is Jean-Claude Van Damme, shellshocked after the heights of Bloodsport, hunting marauders responsible for his family’s murder down an Eastern…

Like the four (!) other Pyun films I’ve seen, there’s some genuinely interesting and unique stuff here, particularly in the atmosphere and some of the editing, buried under a mound of uninspired writing, overemphasized action scenes and general schlock. Watched in VHS – Cannon video Albert Pyun’s Cyborg stands as a masterclass in imaginative filmmaking on a shoestring budget. Despite its modest production constraints, Pyun constructs a visceral post-apocalyptic aesthetic that feels monumental. A wasteland of towering scaffolding, neon-soaked visuals, and brutal set design that punches and resonates with his great soundtrack far above its weight. Jean-Claude Van Damme becomes an unlikely icon, a blank canvas for Pyun’s dystopian vision, while the film’s stark compositions and striking practical effects…

This rewatch inspired by my recent viewing of Pyun’s superior picture Nemesis. I have intense traumatic childhood memories of the shots where Pearl Prophet (excellent Pynchonesque character name, BTW) exposes the back of her cybernetic head and when the henchman wearing a catcher’s chest protector falls down an elevator shaft. definitely would recommend being Pyun-pilled if you’re going to watch this. Kind of like a Vaporwave Van Damme movie, everything is at 75% speed. Has lots of Pyun’s excellent completely bewildering sense of geography. I enjoyed it, but I would put this at the lower end of the prime Van Dammes if you’re coming at it from that. Mostly this made me want to watch the apparently rough director’s cut because you can feel how much is missing from this movie. There’s a plague that we never see a victim of, we get flashbacks twice, none of Pyun’s great needle drops, there’s so little of the cyborg and so much revenge seeking that THIS movie should’ve been called nemesis and nemesis should have been called cyborg. Still full of gorgeous shots and lighting, even if it’s very apparent that everything was shot in North Carolina.

I decided a while back my ratings here would be based purely on how much I liked a film rather than any psuedo-objective assessments of “quality”, whatever that means. I’m tempted to break that rule for Cyborg because it’s true bottom-of-the-barrel stuff: tepid, garish, and half-assed on nearly every level. Everyone sleepwalks through it but the costume designer, 95% of the dialogue is grunting, there’s lots of repetitive editing just to drag things out to feature length, and the titular…

Great low budget post apocalyptic sci-fi film that could’ve been a Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) adaption with a few adjustments. This movie is completely ridiculous. I love Van Damme movies but tell me why the villain Fender is yelling every 5 seconds and is flexing with his arms down in the final fight. How are we supposed to fight if our arms are down and our head is out? Not only that but he gets side kicked onto a hook. That makes zero sense you would have to get lifted onto it not pushed into it. Also why does Van Damme have a knife shoe, that shows up once?

“Restore it? Why? I like the death! I like the misery!
