Rotten Tomatoes: 60% Metacritic Metascore: 57 IMDB: 6.1 71/100 Spooktober 2025 Donna Trenton: “Fuck you, dog.” Lewis Teague’s Cujo is one of those rare Stephen King movies that drops all the supernatural crap and just goes straight survival horror. A rabid St. Bernard traps a mom and her kid in a busted Ford Pinto for most of the runtime, and that’s pretty much the whole movie. Super simple setup, but it actually works. The first half is kind of a borefest, though—we’re stuck watching Dee Wallace deal with her affair drama and family issues, which sure, gives us character stuff, but you’re just sitting there waiting for the dog to snap already. Once Cujo goes full psycho and the car…

*Cujo* is a story about betrayal that hits close to home. Early Stephen King books confront significant taboos: *Pet Sematary* delves into the profound pain of losing a child, while *Cujo* tells the story of man’s best friend who transforms into a terrifying, rabid creature. The choice of a Saint Bernard is particularly striking; historically, these dogs have served as rescue animals, saving lost travelers in the Alps. Opting for a more intimidating breed, such as a Dobermann or Rottweiler, would have diminished the emotional depth of the story. The ticking clock element is quite ingenious: If you’ve ever found yourself trapped in traffic, on a scorching day, you understand the torment even one hour behind hot glass inflicts. The…

Missed opportunity.

Poor Cujo. The melodrama wasn’t that effective, but everything involving Cujo was pretty fun! They really got that cute ass dog looking crazy as hell.

One of the most upsetting stephen king movies I’ve seen, in terms of content and characters. The mom, while badass, frustrated me a lot. And the kid was annoying at moments. But overall, this was an intense story that if I had seen years prior, would’ve increased my fear of dogs (I was afraid of them for a good chunk of my life, except for my own that we had at the house, now I love them). Not the best king adaptation, but still a good watch.

I’ve never liked this movie/story/book. It makes me sad. i understand it for what it is but making the big lovable dog be the monster really bummed me out as a kid/adult. My family makes me watch it. They love it.

That was singlehandedly the scariest jumpscare I have seen. Jumpscares do not get me that much nowadays but that one scene scared the shit out of me. Iykyk. I hate this fuckass dog so much. This is why I’m a cat person. This movie is also a perfect embodiment of this hellish weather we got going on here. Everyone sweating profusely. I’m surprised they haven’t made heatstroke a horror villain yet.

It’s not scary. It’s so painful and irritating to see a moronic woman who can’t do anything to fight against the giant rabid dog but is trapped in a broken car with a poor little boy. Hearing the hysterical cries of the sweet boy is unbearable and depressing. This film is also too opportunistic. How long did the woman take to go get the baseball bat finally? But she had the pistol at the surprisingly handy place to shoot and kill the dog? Gimme a break.

Why haven’t I watched this before. I feel so bad for Cujo and the son, it must genuinely be terrifying to be in that situation and we can literally see Cujo trying not to attack them. This is kinda kne of my biggest fears

Why this was my favorite movie to watch as a child at my aunts house remains a mystery, but I still enjoyed it overall. See full review on the Filmgazers podcast.

This movie is more drama than horror – the horror part of it is more of a plot point for the overall story. But that’s fine, it makes it better than most horrors. They made the wife kind of inept, though. Also, ended so suddenly I thought it was a glitch. Still, pretty good!

Watched on MGM+ FUCK DEE WALLACE…she deserved everything she got. And that dog was SCARY. Whoever did the makeup on that dog should have won an award. And Danny Pintauro, although annoying when he was screaming, was acting exactly how a kid would act. And he looked TERRIFIED. Wonder how they got him to look so damn scared. Also liked the ending. Was hoping the couple wouldn’t kiss, cause FUCK DEE WALLACE.

My love for dogs and this narrative do NOT mesh well. I read the book, I cried. I watched the film, I cried. I’m writing a review, I’m crying. The concept of using a dog using a sweet, loving dog infected by rabies is the perfect metaphor for how addiction/substance abuse destroys a person from the inside out. Ohhh Stephen King.. you know exactly how to break hearts before you scare them to death.

was very good at setting up as many maternal feelings in me as it could to make the latter half of this movie as emotionally upsetting as possible.

this movie honestly breaks my heart because HOW in the world didn’t anyone see the bite/cut on Cujo’s nose and decide that maybe they should check on him or anything? The movie itself wasn’t that bad but I do think it could’ve been better.

“Fuck you dog!” Dee Wallace fucking rules. Danny Pintauro from Who’s The Boss gives an exceptionally grueling child performance and Cujo is a sweet and gentle doggo in real life. I love him and I hope he wasn’t put through too much while filming this. No Ford Pinto’s were sold in the years following this movie. Probably because they had already been discontinued. LOL. Certainly didn’t do much for sweetest dog breed St. Bernard’s for years to come either I imagine. 😩 “Nope, nothing wrong here.”

it wasn’t cujo’s fault 🙁 the owners didn’t notice that enormous fucking infected bite on his nose and get him vaccinated and that pisses me off more than anything. i loved the angles used to show the dog attacks because obviously the dog isn’t actually gonna be attacking the actors so they have to show it from the dog’s perspective or you can just see the cujo standing over the body with the sound effects and camera shaking doing the…

Another movie where I can say I’ve read the book first before watching! The second Stephen King novel I’ve ever read. 1st was Salem’s Lot. I liked Salem’s Lot but I might’ve loved Cujo? I really enjoyed it and got through it in like two weeks. (Which sadly is fast for me. I’m fucked, the next book I’m going to read is The Stand) First off, one of my biggest pet peeves in movies is CGI animals. Or at least…
