When the central conflict is based on a sexist presumption like this it poisons the whole film. It’s also lazy fucking writing. Just write a complex couple; it’s possible, even if they are heterosexual.

gene kelly musicals always have a magical quality in my eyes, and rita hayworth amplifies this. she lights up the screen, and her flawless dancing make her appear mystifying. and then we have gene. the scene in which he dances with his reflection is one of my favorites! together these two make dancing seem effortless, and as if they’re merely floating on air. if you haven’t watched this, you’re missing out! it’s such a beautiful film, from its spotlight on the conover cover girls to kelly’s choreography.

I was really into the first half of this but it runs out of steam a bit when it starts introducing conflict that follows the irritatingly common pattern of the era – Rita Hayworth starts to succeed thanks to her own talents and the rest of the cast get upset about it. This does lead to a pretty excellent Gene Kelly routine where he gets into a dance-off with his own reflection so it’s not all bad, but it all feels a bit flat after the infectious fun of the first chunk of the film. Some fun supporting characters though, as ever – Eve Arden gets a great moment where she fucks up a billiard table and exits in a…

If I had a nickel for every time I’ve thought about this movie since I first watched it I would be a billionaire. Is the plot that interesting? Not really but I still love it! The songs and choreography are so fantastic, whenever I see the Make Way For Tomorrow, Put Me to the Test, Alter Ego, & Cover Girl numbers I can’t help but feel giddy!!! The staging in the Cover Girl number blows me away; I don’t think I’ll ever accurately remember the size of that camera. If you play the Alter Ego dance at my funeral & I don’t get up it means I am DEAD

What is true bliss if not Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly being paired together on film??? Their numbers both together and respectively alone will always blow me away, which is one sentence I’ve said about 173835 times before. I’ve seen the Alter Ego dance more than my own family and I will also continue to talk about that every time Cover Girl gets brought up!!! If your jaw doesn’t drop at the bride dress reveal I simply think you should go to a doctor because that is the most gorgeous thing to be caught on camera. Talking about the numbers in this is my personal never-ending vicious circle

i wish this was 107 minutes of gene kelly and rita hayworth dancing together because everything else is pretty dull and phil silvers is so irritating. but the dancing is SO good. the sequence where gene kelly dances with himself is CRAZY. (9/10 from 1944)

A real mixed bag and not a cohesive experience. Some amazing production values – the Ascot spoof number and Kelly dancing with himself are visually so cool. The main story idea is interesting. The big breakup scene is well written and feels genuine. But the songs are forgettable, some of them because they try too hard, others because they sound so generic. The plot contrivances are, well, contrived. The choreography – in a Gene Kelly movie! – is pretty middling. And worst of all, Phil Silvers is in this movie. Phil. Silvers.

Aggressively mid for a musical with Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth. It is interesting to see them both at this point in their careers before truly hitting their strides. The plot is irritating, conflict is manufactured and manipulative. Musical numbers are flat with choreography that fails to find the strength of its performers or forgettable songs that are either completely out of left field or so on-the-nose that you feel like you got punched in the face! I’m not sure…

Visually wonderful, unfortunately held back by forgettable songs (with the strong exception of Long Ago And Far Away) and a story that fell a little flat. But it’s going to take me a very long time to forget Gene Kelly dancing with his inner demon reflection, Rita Hayworth descending an abstract Broadway set the size of an aircraft carrier, or literally every piece of clothing Eva Arden wore.

The musical numbers in the first half were fun, but the real standout moment was Gene Kelly’s dance-off with his reflection/alter-ego. Not only was it very cool to watch, but thinking about what had to be done technically to achieve that in 1944… wow. It reminded me of Fred Astaire’s shadow dance in Swing Time, proper old-school movie magic. The story was just kind of whatever. I’m always going to be a sucker for technicolor and this is apparently Columbia (now Sony’s) first technicolor musical, which makes it very special to me! A pretty good 4K restoration. Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly are their usual charming selves and their chemistry imo can’t be denied. If this were just the musical numbers, this would be a five stars for me because anytime we get song and dance, it’s perfect. Unfortunately, this also has a story attached to it and oof. The actors are not at fault at all: Rita Hayworth is indeed a godess, outshining each and everyone else, and Gene Kelly gives his character some much needed likeability (much needed because Danny is a miserable, unsupportive prick).

Hayworth pre “Gilda” and Kelly pre everything. This is where “Alter-Ego Dance” features and it was really a great achievement in 1944. I didn’t know any of the songs and the choreography is forgettable for the most part but some costumes are beautiful. Unfortunately, the plot became cliché once the conflict was introduced and made me lose interest.

“Why did I put Cover Girl on my watchlist?” I wondered, customarily not saving movies featuring actors whose filmography I’m likely to work through without prompting. And then the Gene squared sorrowful street shadow dance started and I *shrieked*. Seventeen stars for that sequence, holy shit, my heart rate spiked so sharply though stationary that I had to shed my sweatshirt. Thank you Cover Girl! I think you’re swell.

There are some absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous sequences in this film. One that stands out is when Rusty goes on broadway, those abstract stairs… Rita’s effortless gliding across the stage as if she lives there… the CONFETTI… Straight of a dream. The Cover Girl sequence showcasing all the actual Cover Girls is amazing. If you love the art of fashion and beauty, this movie will definitely catch your eye. Some questionable themes in there, but all in all a good watch. Absolutely adore Rita… and Gene of course.

It’s rare that a movie about showbiz and the promise of a high-flying career in the making absolutely fails to inject any enticement whatsoever into either the prospect of fame and fortune or staying humble with your close friends in the “little leagues.” So I would have to say the characters were weak and the story was too light on flash and glam. But I did remain glued to the screen, thanks to the cast. Though it’s worth pointing out Gene Kelly’s male lead was much less interesting than Otto Kruger’s professional nostalgist.

Already watched it twice. Its a nice movie filmed using beautiful Technicolor, with great costumes and scenery. Phil Silvers’s numbers were terrible, every time he began singing I wanted to poke chopsticks through my ears. Gene Kelly was very good but he was such an asshole (in his role in the film and real life) I couldn’t see past that. And then, of course, we have magnetic, witty and gorgeous Rita Hayworth, delivering a very convincing act and beautiful dance…

What’s better than one character played by Rita Hayworth? Two characters played by Rita Hayworth. What’s better than one Gene Kelly dancing? Two Gene Kellys dancing. Rita Hayworth is a goddess and Gene Kelly is so sexy, he can get away with pretending “chicken” is a good pet name (It’s not). Eve Arden had the best lines. But I needed those men to stop acting like Rusty was some kind of villain.

Baz Luhrmann, director of Moulin Rouge (2001), made a weird observation. Rita Hayworth, he said, is a really good dancer, especially for a bigger-bodied woman. To be fair, she does look “big” on screen, but part of it might just be her layers of hair. According to Google, she was 5′ 6″ and weighed 130 pounds. Does that count as “big”? Highs and lows here. Elevated Kelly and Hayworth to further super stardom. The plot is a drawback with Kelly’s character whining and jealous in story where it’s supposed to be a bad thing that Hayworth gets a major break. The perfect marriage of a genuinely wonderful plot and an unmatched cinematic joy. What do I mean by ‘cinematic joy’? I mean specifically when a film is made by people who are clearly excited and awed by the potential of cinema, its a celebratory aesthetic, and one synonymous with discovery. A rare pairing of Gene Kelly and Rita Hayworth that is, unfortunately, kind of disappointing. They dance well together, especially in a tap number with Phil Silvers, but there’s not enough focus on their dancing. Plus the plot is terribly weak, most notably in the earlier timeline that’s woven throughout. The mirror dance sequence where Gene Kelly dances with himself is sublime and the highlight of the film..

The story is on the flimsy side, the music somewhat forgettable and mushy, and there’s a couple of uncomfortable culturally insensitive moments.
