K Kurosawa’s nightmare visions of capitalism reaches the logical endpoint; isolated, extremely online losers reenacting what they’ve seen in the movies and anime in the name of shitty merch. So goddamn funny. The worst (complimentary) warehouse shootout of all time. It rocks how even the dream home is just another warehouse with a nice kitchen island. Kurosawa’s Burn After Reading. Immense. Loved it.

An action film as only “Cure” and “Pulse” director Kiyoshi Kurosawa would think to make one, “Cloud” leverages the social disaffection at the heart of his analog horror masterpieces into a sterile — but eventually bullet-filled — morality tale about the dehumanizing nature of digital communication. The first hour is a slow accumulation of the petty crimes (and other various insults) that the internet allows people to commit against one another from a distance, and with the benefit of anonymity. The second hour observes what happens when those petty crimes reach a critical mass, and the animus that’s been welling up on social media spills into the real world with the deadly force of a double-barreled shotgun. If Kurosawa’s work…

I didn’t expect Kiyoshi to ever revisit The Revenge movies, but this is o e of his more late 90s movies in a long time, so that makes sense. I don’t think it is quite as controlled as his best late work, but the trajectory has a lot of force and when the violence explodes with all the gun play he does make the best of it. Filled with dread from early on, lots of good observation about overall online disconnection, and it closes in a perfect final chilling note.

QCINEMA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL #10 First half: KIYOSHI KUROSAWA IS BACK BABYYYY! Second half: WTF IS THIS???? A boring but technically excellent movie starring a protagonist who’s impossible to root for and one of the worst female character written in cinema. First time in my life I had to open my phone in a theater just to double-check the genre of the film. I couldn’t tell if people were laughing because they were genuinely entertained or because of how dumb the film was

For The New Republic newrepublic.com/article/198033/late-capitalist-menace-heart-cloud-kurosawa There is nothing new under the sun, but Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s Cloud hovers somewhere in the vicinity. The Japanese master’s latest is a malevolent, cumulonimbus shape-shifter of a movie, a click-through consumer satire that’s darkly droll and also laugh-out-loud funny, charged with Extremely Online vibes and featuring an antihero bearing the (Posh)mark of Cain. Cash-strapped and fed up several years after acquiring his (useless) university degree, twentysomething Yoshii (Masaka Suda) laments his lack of “easy money;” he sulks through his shifts on a clothing factory floor, squirms uncomfortably at the prospect of a promotion, and tries his best to mollify his girlfriend, Akiko (Kotone Furukawa), a striver-by-proxy whose idea making of conversation is to whisper sweet…

Went into this anticipating a victory lap on the apocalyptic internet possession horror vibes of Pulse, and some early parts of how he shoots the seclusion of this protagonists mundane existence behind his screen and on various shipping/receiving docks certainly have some of that uncomfortable environmental ambiance he loves. But I was genuinely shocked by the fact that it transitioned from the creepy doxxing home invasion sequence that seemed like a perfectly logical extension of its premise into full-on (and I promise this is not a joke or exaggeration) anime figurine reseller Reservoir Dogs. One of the strangest, funniest, most unpredictable swings Kurosawa has maybe ever made, and it’s a credit to his formal skill that not only is the…

One of the most wildly unpredictable films I have ever seen. Honestly, the twists border on the nonsensical, but there are clues to a deeper meaning. I think the critical puzzle piece comes from a line of dialogue from Sano after Yoshii asked him why he was rescuing Yoshii. “I told you to call me if you need me.” I know the director has said (according to some reviews, though I am too lazy to confirm) that Sano is the…

Cloud is very close to peak thriller filmmaking, in the same camp as other titans like Se7en and The Sixth Sense. The subtitles did not bother me at all; honestly, they added to the mystery. The film follows a young man who works a mundane factory job but, on the side, has made millions as a reseller. One day, when his manager asks him to take on more responsibility and move up, he makes the decision to follow his dreams…

I’ve never seen a film as well made as it was ill-conceived. This movie was completely nonsensical — I almost wonder if Kiyoshi Kurosawa accidentally gave the script to himself to direct rather than the Coen brothers or someone else who could bring the actual tone the material wanted. Played vastly too straight and therefore ended up completely ludicrous and asinine. Even the action shoot em up segment was devoid of tension or engagement. And, to top it all off, he…

what begins as a compelling refutation of the apocryphal “money buys happiness”—more broadly, an exploration of the deterioration of the individual in a late-stage capitalistic society—devolves into a mess of unentertaining “action”, if you could even call it that, littered with uninteresting dialogue, poor writing, and cringe acting. but, i guess such is expected from characters that are all losers. though, the ending is quite sad, the protagonist paying the ultimate price for his degeneracy and realizing that he is lost, yet it is so poorly written into the overall plot that it means nothing, nonsensical at best. at least the final spoken line is pretty cool.

my biggest gripe with this film is the unnecessary and over reliance on score. it takes away from any tension attempted to be built up to because it completely takes me out of the scenes. the film would genuinely be better without any music(or only diegetic), just putting you directly in the head of the unaware and very neurodivergent protagonist.

What a return to form this was. You tend to forget an active director’s craftmanship due to his excessive catalogues and genre bending projects. Kurosawa had mastered becoming casual with this throughout his career, even if I haven’t completed his works, I tend to forget how many there are and how many times he switches things up. It gets to a point when a director does this for most of his career that not only he develops a clear auteur…

Like Serpent’s Path, the film that this pulls the most direct elements from, this is indeed one of Kiyoshi’s bleakest (and least mystical) films but it’s also a great summation of the future he had been hinting toward over the 2 decades since Pulse. The nameless shadow syndicate that rescues Yoshii and urges him to focus solely on making bank. That transactional world where individual identity is reduced to coordinates and aliases, where who you actually are is meaningless, where…

I love how Kurosawa shoots decaying urban landscapes. He populates them with uncanny characters driven by poverty, desperation, resentment and greed and makes the whole thing feel like a nightmare. The scene in the bus with the shadowy figure peering over Yoshi’s shoulder might be the most unsettling thing I’ve seen in a while.

Turns out the internet is not just alienating/isolating but also empowering crazy people to converge to do bad, destructive things. Pretty entertaining with lots of killing and seeing pretty much everyone involved get what they deserve.

Loved the clinical, very X-file, vibe of the film. Seems slow and devoid of action and grows and grows. It feels distant in a way. Very matter-of-fact. But it has this almost myterious focus on its characters that reveals how awful people they all are. I’m a sucker for 90s thrillers that are made bowadays.

“Situation super bad?” God damn this fucking ruled. Kiyoshi Kurosawa!!!!!! This would pair so well with No Other Choice. There’s a very PCW-ness to the vibe but every scene I was like “This is so cowboy Western-coded” and honestly this story would go hard in that context, too. Loved this. Some absolutely incredible deaths. The actors really sold each of them as something unique each time. Loved that there was always a little turn in every scenario, you were never…

When my gangstalkers come for me it’s not going down like that, I tell you that much We’re all ratfucking each other every day, civility and cooperation thrown over the violence and exploitation like a coat of paint over water damage. Just shoot me in the face like a man instead of pricegouging me for my anime figurine on an auction website. Clicking a mouse and pulling a trigger aren’t so different.

Kiyoshi continues to prove why he’s one of the better working filmmakers. The film stylistically doesn’t stray from his catalog much but he meaningfully expands on his ideas regarding the virtual world and centering films around a sense of dread. Absolutely loved the ending too. Kiyoshi Kurosawa Ranked

I found the first hour of setup excellent and was excited for it to take off in the 2nd/3rd acts. Unfortunately it mostly fell flat. The climax and action of the third act felt slow and uninteresting to watch, and the ending was a bit on the nose for me. It’s hard not to compare this to No Other Choice, both being commentaries on capitalism (and to a smaller extent technology) released in 2025 from Asian filmmakers. I think No Other Choice succeeded at being more entertaining and more of a black comedy which landed a lot better for me personally.

I’m utterly baffled by this movie. I get the unlikable protagonist, the rip-off and revenge plots, and the “we’re in too deep to get out now” mentality. What I don’t understand are the bizarre motivations and contrivances employed to prop up the movie to its wet fart of a finale. This looks like the director and producers saw Ben Wheatley’s Free Fire, applied a coat of gray and green hospital paint, threw in some Tarantino and John Woo nastiness, and…

And all this time I thought the steelbook scalpers were awful and had no idea… My first Kiyoshi Kurosawa did not disappoint. For a late period thriller from Kurosawa, this is surprisingly slick and fundamentally sound. Production value slips but Kurosawa’s use of movement and blocking is superb. The script is pretty fantastic; focusing on very specific modern issues that gradually escalate into something more genre-y. I love that Kurosawa grounds us in the main character’s perspective instead of giving…

Cloud turns the invisible resentment of online commerce into something terrifyingly physical. Every profitable transaction leaves another person somewhere on the other side of the screen getting angrier. Masaki Suda is excellent as Ryosuke Yoshii, a factory worker whose online reselling side hustle gradually becomes his entire life. He buys products from desperate sellers for as little as possible, marks them up, occasionally misrepresents what he is selling, and watches the orders disappear from his screen with almost no interest…
