From the brilliant mind that forged the horror masterpieces Cure and Pulse, Kiyoshi Kurosawa has once again made a work of art that relies heavily on the use of subtle, yet highly effective horror filmmaking. The movie focuses on a former chef named Takuji Matsuoka who is teaching cooking classes while waiting for a job. The entire frame is filled with the obsession with metal in this film. In the initial frames of the movie, we are briefly introduced to it, with a vertical pan from stainless metal pipes to the cold, metallic interior of the cooking school set up. We can also see the mother who obsesses about recycling soda/beer cans and the kids’ metal puzzle toy. We will witness the transformation of…

Basicamente o Meshes of the Afternoon do Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

In this 45-minute unsettling experiment, Kiyoshi Kurosawa provides an interesting new piece to his brand of unknown horror. It’s highly reminiscent of Cure and Pulse, but a sense of autonomy separates this textually and visually. Evil grows out of life’s safe banality in a classic Kurosawa setting, and no explanation is given. Instead of telling a coherent story, Kurosawa is content with letting visuals and sound do the talking. Between long takes and unrelenting scores, Chime is a terrific style exercise that may have benefitted from a clearer narrative, but it’s already scarier than most of its counterparts. Highly recommended.

The uniquely hypnotic, ambient dread of Cure and Pulse distilled into 45 minutes of pure alienated menace. Paranoid ambiguity and trance (or curse) like possession where the unbearably still hum of a modern work/home environment is a tense precursor to horrifying violent urges has always been the name of the game for Kurosawa so I can see why some are declaring it a victory lap exercise in style, but there are so many wonderful little specific details to this as well: the idea that cooking is meditative process that calms negative emotions (“we feel fine even with dangerous things lying around”), his student asking him to explain his process to her “logically” right before he irrationally and dispassionately stabs into…

The death rattle of the modern world, a corrosive asmr of samsara; a continuation of the final shot of Cure; a truly cursed text.

Formalism comes naturally to Kurosawa, like walking or breathing; his frames, never ostentatious, somehow go from spare to pressurized without visible manipulation. Chime, which runs 45 minutes long, is , like so many of KK’s films, a diabolical paradox, an exercise in control describing a plague of dissociative behaviour; it could be a sequel to Cure except that there’s no psychic terrorist at the center, only a kind of free-floating, ambient madness that seems to pass freely between people and spaces, and maybe thrugh the screen as well. I’m certainly not feeling very well at the moment…

Kiyoshi Kurosawa has long been regarded as a filmmaker capable of getting beneath your skin like no other filmmaker working. This (along with the likes of Cure, Pulse, and Retribution, etc) is another masterclass in capturing mounting paranoia and fear. Within just a 45-minute timeframe, this is both pure and existential, as well as profoundly creepy. Brilliant!

even when Kurosawa experiments with genre formulas, leading them ad absurdum, it’s still scarier than 80% of the rest from horrorhausen.

Uncanny and existentially terrifying in a way that I haven’t felt since the first time I saw Cure and Pulse. Not the first to mention this on this website but this is Kiyoshi with the B subplots stripped out until it’s almost pure form, practically abstract. More than an exercise in my opinion, everyday modern alienation pared down to abstract terror – almost like a horror Antonioni. Disassociation is always around the corner – I haven’t been this unsettled by a movie in years. And as always with the later Kiyoshi pictures it’s also a little masterclass in directing, but even more stripped down and essential here: not a shot is wasted, and it seems like not a second is wasted as well.

One of the purest Kurosawa movies. Very direct and stripped about how his formal control can highlight unease and the malaise behind the spookiness. Very much for the fans, but why else make something like this.

Invisible sounds of the modern world: putting out the trash, balancing work and family, between art and profit, all while dealing with a progressive existential alienation that slowly contaminates everything, even the actual matter of the world. A hitchcockian yarn plagued by Kurosawa’s eerie, ghostly formal games, both visual and especially sonorous. Nobody conveys contemporary social malaise quite so effectively, nor so precisely. That murder sequence under the difracting lights and sounds of the train was great.

I had no idea this was only 45 minutes long, so it ended a bit abruptly for me. It was nicely shot. I loved the angles and the post colour grading, but I needed more. The story felt like it could have gone on significantly longer. I wanted that. oh, but I loved the last interview scene. That is how I feel talking to 99% of humans.

Kurosawa working at his most stripped down, and the austerity is the point. A high-pitched tone intrudes on an otherwise banal setting, and from there the film treats violence not as something explained but as something contagious, a frequency that certain people are simply tuned to receive. That’s the through-line running back to Cure and Pulse: derangement isn’t an aberration in Kurosawa’s world, it’s latent in everyone, waiting for the right signal. What’s striking here is how the DIY digital…

wow so unsettling and leaves you with so many questions but i love how short it is. i think it horror films work so well when they leave so many things unknown. the shots are gorgeous and the lighting is so purposeful, casting shadows that look like silhouettes and some beautiful sound design; taking away and giving sound at very precise moments i think its so good. it leaves so many things to the imagination and i love it

knowing how to make an unsettling horror film without relying on jump scares is great but anyone can do that, but making an unsettling horror film without going too deep into the lore of the horror or even showing the entity/the cause is something that kiyoshi kurosawa excels at. he knows what the imagination can come up with is scarier than anything so he lets the horror stay in the unknown. the unseen. he definitely killed his kid/kids at the end right?

lowk this freaked me out real bad right at the last minute I absolutely love movies with good soundscapes but this is really clever IMO. Kurosawa is really good at showing everyday people grappling with themes of possession, violence and losing your autonomy — and for me the anticipation and irrational behaviour is a lot more terrifying than the typical horror plot in big films. The forced perspective is really nice too I can tell my eyes are being…

After spending way to long sitting at a computer trying to decide what to watch, I decided to settle on one of the shortest films in my watchlist, Chime. Let me tell you though, Chime is not the kind of film you want to watch at 2:30 in the morning, as this is, in my opinion the most unsettling of Kiyoshi Kurosawa I have seen thus far. His cold, unpalatable formalism shines with his scenes of utilizing empty spaces and…

woke up from a nightmare after seeing this last night ☺️ kiyoshi kurosawa has the ability to hold a dreadful atmosphere throughout mundane life, telling us that something’s not quite right with the world we’re familiar with. ordinary, inanimate objects suddenly turn into things that feel unsettling and evil just to look at. terrifying to look at but even more terrifying when the camera takes our eyes away from them. in chime, paranoia and isolation creep their way into the…

Kurosawa is a fucking genius. I don’t think I’ve ever felt this scared while watching something, it’s refreshing really. Kurosawa has this unique way of making horror in one of the most soothing settings. The cinematography is beyond good, and the soundtrack, God. It has the same eerie feeling of cure 1997, but doesn’t feel repetitive at all. In fact, chime does what cure 1997 couldn’t get me to feel, the sheer horror of killing without reason. Upon fourth viewing I feel confident in saying that Chime (2024) is a five bagger. It’s easily findable to stream online free on a Russian streaming site with English subtitles, it’s less than 45 minutes long, and it feels incredibly current in execution and point of view. very reminiscent of the haneke film the seventh continent. there’s something merciless about it all. how mundane it is to live in modernity, a life slipping through fingers, a job you hate, a fumbled interview, a trash bag full of beer cans. at once it all hits a crescendo, a great outburst, a lashing out, and then silence. guilt follows close by, an urge to run from it all. the film turns stress into something more stomach churning, an unsettling tone and a disgusting self centered apathy throughout. i very much enjoyed it.

Holy shit, I’m now realizing that this is a masterpiece. The story follows Matsuoka, a seemingly normal man who lives a mundane life as a cooking instructor. Initially, he seems absolutely ordinary. I’ve been thinking for a day about this movie’s themes and coming up sort of empty-handed. Or at least I’m not really sure. Originally released as an NFT that owners were encouraged to rent out at prices of their own choosing, Chime is a strange beast. The fact that it’s also a 45-minute psychological thriller puts it in a narrative no-man’s-land between “short” and “feature.” Strange again. On its surface, this is a film that expresses the frustrations of a middle age artist (or chef, in this case) who has found himself teaching and living an ordinary suburban life instead of creating and…

Kiyoshi Kurosawa turns the mundane into something deeply unsettling in Chime. What starts as an ordinary domestic story gradually becomes an increasingly disturbing descent into paranoia, alienation, and inexplicable horror. Kurosawa’s restrained direction makes the film especially effective, instead of relying on conventional scares, he lets the unease slowly seep into every scene, making even seemingly harmless moments feel wrong. The sparse atmosphere and unsettling sound design create a constant sense of dread, while the film’s ambiguity leaves you questioning…

This project has several dimensions to analyze. The screenplay and editing are filled with everyday yet profound metaphors. In just 45 minutes, there’s enough development for the viewer to already not want it to end. I think this is both a strength and a weakness of the project. The sound design is something worth highlighting in this film. It’s brilliant.

So refined, distilled, like a piece of meat with all the fat cut off. It almost feels sterile whether its the somewhat minial sets or the almost ASMR like sound design it makes me so uneasy. to me the spookiest aspect of chime is how we are mostly held at a distance from the protagonist’s dealings with the titular noise. we see its effects on him but are surprised at the proceedings because we have no glimpse into the character’s mind. it’s like watching a regular movie through security cam footage i’m just gonna throw this out there but the film felt vibe-wise like the cinematic representation of a joy division song. it made me feel the same way. i can’t elaborate

If this wasn’t highly inaccesible and partially created to promote NFTs, i’d definitely appreciate it a little more. That’s not to say i didn’t love the film, because i did, but it could NOT have had a worse release strategy. I enjoyed the wailing screams and the squishy sounds and every bit of ASMR on this. It goes well with the sound-based premise. But the knives, man… The goofy lunatic stabbing himself in the neck after smiling eerily was a disappointing deja-vu.
