There was a time when, if you had the sudden compulsion to watch Chasing Amy, you literally had to go out and rent a DVD copy from the video store (or buy a used Criterion edition from Goodwill) and then put the DVD in your DVD player. In the old days, this cumbersome process would have been enough to destroy any curiosity. But now, if it’s right there on the front page of a streaming site… Famously, Smith made this movie to work through the pain of knowing that his real-life girlfriend Joey Lauren Adams had a more extensive sexual history than him. This fact, like the film itself, has Aged Poorly™, although I found the movie somewhat interesting as…

Remember when that one straight guy you know baked you a cake shaped like a naked woman with huge breasts on your birthday, and you were totally okay with it and laughed hysterically together? Yeah. Me neither. Chasing Amy exists in a world where straight people are allowed to be abrasively, disgustingly rude toward queer people with absolutely no repercussion. Apparently you can just lob insults and ignorance at us all day long and we’ll still wanna be your friend. Hell, maybe we’ll even want to date you. Hey. Straight dudes. Lesbians don’t wanna fuck you. They won’t fall in love with you. And god fucking dammit, lesbians don’t sit around drinking wine and mourning the loss of so many gay women who have gone and fallen in love with men. Another one bites the dust, eh? Bite my ass. I wish I could track down every single copy of this movie and destroy them all.

This movie isn’t that old but it feels like it belongs to an ancient era of history, one future scholars may look back on and call “The Snootchie Boochie Age.”

The only funny thing about this movie is the idea that someone would give up sleeping with women to date the goateed cry baby which is Ben Affleck.

Pains me to say that you can actually sort of see Kevin improving as a director in this. Nothing special by any means but his camera actually emphasizes dramatic moments instead of just sitting there waiting for an actor to do it and there’s even a marginally compelling structure to it (the mirrored opening and closing scenes kind of work). However, none of it really matters because its all in service of the most mind-numbingly stupid idea for a movie anyone has had. It’s the painfully obvious self-revelation that sexuality and relationships are complicated and messy that most have when they’re teens (and that Smith apparently had when he was 25) but taken to some weird, geek fantasy extreme where…

I’ve seen lots of criticisms about this film with people saying things like it “aged horribly” and it’s also how it’s incredibly “outdated”. However, I wouldn’t exactly agree with any of that. Instead I’d call it surprisingly really woke and progressive as it explores themes like toxic masculinity as a dude named Holden falls in love with a lesbian, holding the mentality that “he can fix her” (Which unfortunately a lot of straight dudes still believe to this day). However,…

“everyone needs dick” BROTHER how did you not realize sooner tbh i hope that’s how my friends would react if i fell in love with a man remember kids, bisexuality doesn’t exist but a lesbian CAN turn straight when she meets the right man if he puts in enough effort!! 😍 well then again i’d say it can be educational. confronts false ideas about sesbian lex. also about the obsession with “norms” and “standards.” delightful to see that discussions about…

just don’t get why they had to make her a lesbian just to unlesbian her but it’s artsy and explores misogyny and queer identity so it flies i guess??

Watched for the gaggery and stayed for the extremely familiar and poignant portrayal of complex relationship dynamics of a very specific sub demographic (vaguely promiscuous sapphic leaning bisexuals of a certain American east coast lived experience…) Did not expect to feel so moved Tbqh

Kevin Smith cannot write female characters. My god… For a film that calls itself a comedy, I didn’t laugh once during its nearly two-hour run. Write better jokes, Kevin.

Watched for my Matt Damon stats yet again. And lovely to borrow the dvd from my pookie Alex and save me the $5 to rent this. Overall pretty good. Definitely felt like a more sincere romcom. Definitely helped from the performances.

Amazing movie! No complaints other than very, very, VERY subtle homophobia/homophobic stereotypes, but I’ve ruled that down to the time it was made so I don’t hold it against them. Good lesbian representation/bi-curious representation. Is pretty funny and still can get into deep topics at the same time. Would definitely recommend this and other Jay and Silent Bob movies!

This is a film about a lesbian wanting to have sex with a goatee-wearing Ben Affleck and yet it still manages to be a really nuanced look at sexuality as something far more fluid, messy and experimental as the much more straightforward labels used to define it suggest

One of my favorite Kevin Smith movies ever. It’s way ahead of its time and the dialogue is incredible and it’s truly such an incredible watch and I wish more people have seen it. Ben Affleck is so good in this one and this is about Kevin Smiths actual relationship with Joey Lauren Adam’s who stars in this alongside Ben, so she is reliving what she went though with Kevin for the movie, and that just adds such a cool touch to the movie.

Freaky when I don’t realize st first that I’m watching. A Kevin Smith movie and then all of a sudden every scene is in my hometown

This is pretty funny n stuff but why did the lesbian fall for a man COME ON.

i don’t understand why alyssa didn’t just accept herself as a bisexual instead of completely turning straight just for a guy, and i feel like the movie could of been better in a lot of different ways. Apparently the 90s didn’t grasp the concept of bisexuality

1. Insufferable dialogue 2. Can’t stand that actress’s voice 3. Took away nothing from the story

A fascinating film that even though it clearly does not stick the landing in many aspects and seemingly has never heard of the concept of a bisexual person, broaches conversations that we are still having to this day. Much better at discussing the slut-shaming aspect than anything to do with queerness.

I legitimately don’t know how I can possibly score this movie. It is very good if a bit antiquated, but the ending really ruins the flow of the story

“Jesus, just cuz a guys got a predilection toward dick jokes” I feel like this movie tries so hard to be profound.. it just tries too hard and is so cringy and dated. I still love Kevin Smith and his writing and his films, but I much prefer the silly films like Mallrats or Clerks than this. I freaking love Jason Lee though.. guy always makes me laugh.

Just a testament to the strength of this film that I can identify with different aspects of it as I age. This was my favorite movie from probably 1999 to 2005. As a teen I was completely invested in Holden’s love sick puppy story. I wanted to memorize his speech to Alyssa in the car so I too could confess my love like that some day. Watching it this time, I HATED Holden. How dare he do that to Alyssa!…

This is a serious exercise. It’s like an S.A.T. question. Which one’s going to get to the hundred dollar bill first – the male-friendly lesbian, the man-hating dyke, Santa Claus, or the Easter Bunny. Three of those dont fucking exist. Great script. The documentary Chasing Chasing Amy is also worth a watch, even if you dont like this film.

Watched for umpteenth time…. For me it’s still very funny, particularly Jason Lee, and the 90s style Kevin smith dialogue, even if it has aged terribly-it’s sexual politics and homophobia really aren’t good… but it’s not going to matter. The movie is canon for me… I took it in in formative years; early indie movie influence.

Some movies you watch. Others become little time machines. Chasing Amy is one of those movies for me. Whenever I think back to it, I don’t just remember the story, the characters, or Kevin Smith’s trademark mix of crude humour and surprisingly sharp observations about love, friendship, insecurity and the ridiculous ways people can fuck things up when emotions get involved. I remember being a teenager. I remember sitting around a mate’s place with a group of friends, crowded onto…
