CONSCIOUSNESS.DAT Posits itself as Blomkamp’s Robocop but has virtually nothing to say about crime, police militarization or artificial intelligence and instead mostly functions as an ultra-violent, South African E.T. or Iron Giant, which is so blatantly moronic and ill-conceived I’m almost inclined to give it credit for some of the all-timer comedy like Patel yelling at Chappie to nurture his creativity while he decides between painting & committing gangster crimes with Die Antwoord or the scene where Jackman (in his psychopathic Catholic high school gym teacher attire, complete with the mullet, lanyard and rugby ball) assaults and threatens to blow Patel’s brains out in the office and then deflates the situation by going “haha just a prank, guys, everyone go back to work”, but the writing here is otherwise so embarrassingly earnest and the performances so miscalculated I just can’t do it. Still one of the most baffling studio releases of the decade.

It’s Short Circuit with a dose of RoboCop, a hint of I, Robot, and a spoonful of A.I., in Neill Blomkamp’s third film that’s heavy on the mullets, and ultralight on plot, and human character development. Once again another Mr. Blomkamp movie features cool looking robots, and a strong performance from Sharlto Copley as the voice and heart of Chappie. What’s new? Mr. Blomkamp makes nice looking movies, and Mr. Copley is Mr. Blomkamp’s muse. Plus, the camera doesn’t shake like a Polaroid picture in Chappie. So, you can leave your headache medicine at home. Or maybe not. Instead of a shaky cam, we get Die Antwoord. That’s the biggest double-edged sword in recent memory. Ninja, is a bad motherfucker…

“There’s no more bodies.” A typically incoherent piece of exquisitely designed tech-fetishism from Blomkamp. Has virtually nothing to say about artificial intelligence, privatized/militarized/automated law enforcement, the limits of consciousness, or weird South African prankster rappers, but does continue his distinctive obsession with disrupting human bodies with technology, what metal does to meat. His films are never more compelling or beautiful than when they gaze lovingly at flesh being shredded by bullets like it was pulled pork.

If you’re a Die Antwoord fan, get ready for the ride of your fucking life. I think a pretty accurate way to describe this movie is to take into consideration me and this little six-or-so year old boy who sat next to me. The little kid was absolutely petrified of Yolandi and Ninja. Every time that they were on the screen, he literally covered his eyes. Then there’s me. I had an awestruck expression on my face every time I saw them because it was fucking surreal. Die Antwoord aren’t even real people at this point. They’re spiritual entities. If you hate them, I IMPLORE you to stay far, far away from this film. It’s literally Die Antwoord The Movie™.…

I didn’t get the Elysium hate and I don’t get the Chappie hate. I greatly enjoyed Chappie and Blomkamp is 3/3 for me.

The critics are absolutely wrong about Chappie. In all seriousness, I am baffled that this film is getting blasted by the critics. Chappie is actually a pretty deep movie. It explores several themes and ideas and does a very good job at doing so. Especially since the run time is just under 2 hours. The movie also has got some genuine heart behind it. As a character, I really liked Chappie and I truly cared what happened to him. His character development is very well done. Sharlto Copley does a really fantastic job as this robot protagonist. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed both of the rappers (Die Antwoord). They’re a bit over-the-top, but I bought into them. My favorite…

blomkamp is so clearly of the same school as jim cameron and the wachowski sisters — big themes, messy emotions, a craze for production detail, a fascination with subculture ephemera, a desire to find the transcendent ghost within the oppressive machinery of mundane life. unlike those two, his lack of success in making broad tent-pole entertainment certainly isn’t for lack of trying — maybe he tries too hard, trades too obviously in his influences and cliches. his approach is rooted in immediacy, with handheld cameras and jump-cuts and a documentation’s lack of interest in obtaining compositional beauty over the basic legibility of a shot’s information. but his vision of the future is the stuff of 50s speculative fiction, not out-of-date…

Id like to propose we all start saying “fuck mother” instead of “motherfucker” I honest dont really get the hate that this movie gets. Was it really so hyped up that people expected a masterpiece? Its no award potential. But i found this South African action comedy to be very solid. I really liked the concept, the mind of a child inside of a body of a combat droid, awesome idea! Its super over the top which makes it really…

Yaratıcı ve yaratılan arasındaki ilişkiyi, ölüm korkusunu ve “Bir yapay zekanın varoluşsal sancıları” konusunu iyi işlediğini düşünüyorum. “Why do humans lie?” ve “Chappie does not kill, Chappie wants to live!” replikleriyle insanları 3 günde çözen ve kısa ömründe insanlardan daha insan olmayı başaran Chappie gönülleri fethetti. Gemini’dan 3-5 kat daha zeki.

“Don’t laugh, I’m being cool.” A crossover between ROBOCOP, SHORT CIRCUIT and BIG HERO 6 starring a very miscast Die Antwoord. Genuinely has a cool premise to start off with, alongside impressive effects and Hugh Jackman giving his all trying to work with the script with that hairdo of his, it’s hard work. Unfortunately, the story soon becomes a mess, that’s can’t really decide what it wants to be, confusing loud and edgy with interesting. We’re suppose to sympathise with…

Silly and grandiose in a kind of B movie way, but enjoyable throughout. If you want serious themes actually examined and expressed etc this isn’t it. If you want to see a lot of very bad haircuts and listen to grating South African accents and rap music, and some very fine anthropomorphic robot effects, this is it. Hugh Jackman is here also and Sigourney too. They don’t get a ton to do. There’s also one guy who gets subtitles who, to me, speaks more comprehensibly than many of our leads, with no subtitles. Watched on Blu-ray from a mystery grab bag pack from Bull Moose Music.

Seems I liked this a little more than most – which maybe because I’ve just finished watching Robocop 3 (1993) – but I found Blomkamp’s robot cop movie to be surprisingly good regardless. It’s a little bit cheesy at times but the inclusion of Die Antwoord (while controversial perhaps) is inspired and ultimately gives the film its unique flavour. Ninja and Yo-Landi aren’t exactly great actors by any means but they have character it’s fair to say. I was also impressed with…

Years back I watched this with my mom when it had came out, she was the one to pick it out for our movie night. And today I got to watch it again with my amazing girlboyfriend. I haven’t seen it in furever. It’s such a cute n fun movie!!!!! Chappie n Yolandi are so freaking cuties. I have no idea why so many ppl seem to hate this movie in the reviews but it’s definitely not as bad as they’re making it out to be. I love all the Die antwoord songs.

Oh god, I still don’t understand why this was so heavily criticized. Sure, I get that it’s not the best movie ever made, nor the best robot movie, but seriously, I’ve seen far worse movies that only got half the criticism. Now, putting all that aside, I feel like this touches on several important social issues. This year, we’re definitely starting to see the impact of technology. You see how a person develops in society based on their upbringing, and…

Overall I think it was a fun movie, and had a beautiful character arc with Chappies’ Character, but lacked much logic and didn’t really explain some character choices. Ninja and Yo Landi had terrible acting, I know they are primarily musicians but I don’t understand why they would have such big roles if they lacked acting skills. I think the ending was really good with them all becoming droids and being able to be together was nice.

Chappie is ridiculously rewatchable, packed with so many fun moments. The idea of an AI becoming sentient isn’t anything new, but the way it’s handled here gives it a personality of its own. Watching Chappie slowly develop right in front of us makes it surprisingly easy to care about this little piece of metal. The robot’s movements, the goofy dialogue as it learns, and even its simple early emotions all help build that connection. The writing also does a nice…

- Synopsis
- Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings—some good, some bad—and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from any one else: he is a robot.
