Action! – The Unlikely Rumble: Hill v Hyams Walter Hill brings the brutality with another fantastic cast of big known performers and one or two then newcomers like Jason Mamoa. Although the writing could have been stronger and some of the running gags got tiresome too fast, it’s nice to see Sung at the helm of a movie and his screen presence is great. Stallone effortlessly gets under the skin of this mercenary with a heart. Momoa was lovely to see on film, however without his signature beard, the man looks a little strange. The action is great, but for some reason they went with this editing that appears like it was done less by a film veteran and more…

Hill’s bag of favorite tricks keeps this scummy DTV-level stuff lively. Sly & Kang have good buddy chemistry. Momoa MVP. dumb fun.

A watchable fast paced action thriller. Sylvester Stallone and Jason Momoa’s performance and screen presence was a big plus for this movie as the plot of the movie is thin and predictable. Action sequences were good. Overall a one time watchable flick.

Appreciate the attempt to bring back some of that hyper-macho R-rated 80s buddy action and many of the casting choices are suitable for it (especially Momoa, who was clearly a star even here) but it’s largely soured for me by the tacky script and ugly digital photography/blood. Just feels a bit lame and on autopilot for Hill considering that adjusted for inflation, this has basically the same budget as Extreme Prejudice. Honestly, it felt like he was having more fun in the low-budget DTV sphere with things like Undisputed.

The series of graphic novels this is based on called Du plomb dans la tête, holds a great and violent story, filled with twists and turns and a host of interesting characters. Walter Hill’s film only shares some of the violence and the title. What remains is a painfully generic and devastatingly uninteresting actioner without creativity, originality and fun. But with a staggering amount of poorly timed one-liners, a surprising dose of racism and a villain (Momoa) who probably should have played the hero as he is the only one with any inkling of screen presence. Yes, Stallone is that bad. He is completely unintelligible and his usual physical presence only works in a handful of scenes. The rest of…

Walter Hill in late career greatest hits mode with a 45mil budget to burn and a bonafide movie star in the lead; it’s easy to see that this is based on a French graphic novel and it works in its favor that its pulp sensibilities are inherently European as Hill’s Americana feels even more brash, especially the pervasive twang of the score that sounds like leftovers from the Last Man Standing recording sessions (only this time from the composer of Boss Baby, seriously) — I’d be lying if I said this all works, the bookended narration from Stallone is cartoonish, the racism is ugly and it (like many mid-budget action films from the early 2010s) is shot on film but…

Momoa steals the show and that ending axe fight totally rules. Hill also providing us with a high body count and a lot of bloody squibs per usual, so I can dig it. Also, does anyone know what the fuck is going on with Stallone’s face in the movie? 😬 😝🔫👨🏻💼🍻🧑🏻💼🗡🧔♀️👮🏻🥃👨🏻💼🩸🪡👩✒️🎭🎊🏚💣💻📁🪓

Stripped down to the bare essentials Walter Hill. It’s one of his sillier films but I still found a lot to enjoy in yet another throwback to the beefcake action era; no ironic humor to weigh it down and as simple and direct as its non-ironic title. Stallone is like a Stretch Armstrong toy with mismatched limbs that have been pulled and twisted too many times in too many directions. The baddies are pretty entertaining as the clockwork proceedings unfold. Jason Momoa’s evil henchman shares Stallone’s passion for delivering bullets to the brain and has an ax to grind with Sly in the inevitable big-warehouse-in-the-middle-of-nowhere climax. Already want to watch it again, so apparently I’m part of the target audience: Bullseye!

Stallone’s face pumped full of fillers and smoothed out into a lumpy abomination and his veiny old muscle body are a work of art from like, hell

Extremely clichéd action film, and I couldn’t really get past Stallone aimlessly killing people, it felt so flat. Sung Kang was awesome though, love to see him. Stallone is back with his one note voice overs. Jason Momoa stumbles around wondering why he’s even there. Walter Hill ranked
