The parts of this that click do so very well but honestly its emotional swings work better on paper than in practice, it’s in desperate need of narrative momentum, and the central conflicts lack the first one’s galvanic thorniness. Also, without spoiling it, the best scene in the movie has the unfortunate side effect of reminding you of just what is missing here.

But when the main conflict of the story feels so shallow and colonizer is one of the most used words… but nah lets not provide answers to these questions. Lots of hand waving. Lots of conveniences. it had some pacing issues, but overall, a beautiful movie. the cinematography is amazing and it was a great introduction to Namor. i love how different Shuri is to T’Challa. i also think the movie does a great job of balancing Shuri’s story and her grief with a genuine and respectful goodbye to T’Challa and Chadwick Boseman. I don’t really get how Ryan fumbled on this. It’s really not that great. Story is coherent but the pacing is the main issue. CGI looked silly as well. I’ve never really liked Shuri as a character but she kinda locked in for this one. Minus half a star from initial rating/I remember falling asleep in theaters for this. End review.

Ludwig Göransson and Ryan Coogler are the biggest reasons why I like this film. Ludwig just hits it out of the park with his composing. Maybe not to the standard of the first film but certainly way above the standards of other MCU projects. This is frankly a weird story idea, starring a team of top talent that feels wasted in a dulled follow-up to one of Marvel’s biggest hits. And it potentially could still be one of their biggest crowd pleasers. So, why does this feel like every other movie made that’s slightly similar, when the first one was so thrilling because it broke away from tried forms and conventions? The key element is not Chadwick Boseman, it’s a confidence in itself that seems missing. To me it feels perfunctory, afraid to cut its own path.

Definitely an underrated movie. Not as good as the first one but it didn’t have Chadwick Boseman’s gravitas and charisma (RIP). M’Baku’s character development has definitely come a long way. I loved the advice he gave to Shuri after her mother’s death. Namor was amazingly acted. Very interesting story for the character. Amazing way to introduce him to casual comic fan. Side note: I thought it funny that the US thought that it could destabilize the country. Just the mindset…
