James “Whitey Bulger” was an Irish tough guy who ran his own brand of organized crime in the Southie section of Boston. His gang was known as The Winter Hill Gang. After reaching an agreement with an FBI agent to help take down the Italian mafia, Whitey goes from small time hood to criminal kingpin with friends in high places. This is the story of his path of destruction on the streets of Southie. Whitey Bulger may not be Italian but his name is every bit as notorious as some of the mafia’s most infamous, and he did it while serving as a federal informant to take them down in Boston. Whitey’s brand of corruption knew no bounds, he had…

Johnny Depp is just a really talented dude. Like, I didn’t love this movie, but I never regretted watching him. Plus I’m a closet Joel Edgerton stan, so the cast really works for me. I don’t think this is a great movie, but it is an interesting look at a notorious American gangster.

Scott Cooper is evidently very good at letting famous actors do whatever they want in classy but largely generic films. Here Johnny Depp gives yet another idiosyncratic, physical performance as a charismatic psycho, and who the fuck cares?

Like a Scorsese gangster movie without any sauce. The strong cast carries this movie so hard. They make it somewhat enjoyable, but the movie itself is just so plain. Scott Cooper Ranked

The biographical crime drama gets let down by its generic approach and bland narrative. Though it lines up one true event after the other, it seems to miss the much needed gripping factor. Even if the flow was deliberate, it needed more excitement hold given the two hour runtime. Johnny Depp is about the only saving grace, who manages to single handedly hold it in the watchable territory with his outstanding performance. An ok watch.

An absolutely stacked cast. Johnny Depp was incredible, Joel Edgerton was awesome, and everyone as well. The right amount of violence, paired with the tension, produced a very enjoyable crime film.

Bolstered by a truly magnificent performance from the actor who has a penchant for playing larger-than-life characters, Black Mass is another entry into last year’s long list of biopics and although it paints a gripping portrait of a notorious crime boss, it’s also marred by its generic plot & uneventful storytelling. Based on a true story, Black Mass chronicles the criminal life of infamous Irish-American mobster Whitey “Jimmy” Bulger and focuses on the years when he became an informant for FBI for his own self-interests and assisted them in eliminating the rival gang while carrying out his crime business under federal protection at the same time. Directed by Scott Cooper, there isn’t really anything worth mentioning about his latest movie other…

Johnny Depp might still be covered in make-up for this role, but at least he’s not running around like a babbling idiot. Instead he plays a very dark, heartless, and brutal man and he knocks it out of the park. Black Mass is filled with fantastic performances, Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton being the standouts. My biggest issue with this film is that it’s a bit hollow and slow moving. While, I was always interested in what was going on, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t bored some of the time.

A movie exactly as generically ominous and boring as its title. Cooper and Depp have all the moves down cold but no soul. Rory Cochrane though.

This is a go-to movie for me. Possibly Johnny Depp’s last great performance. Love the supporting cast as well.

Feels more like a documentary than a film. A straightforward tale about corrupt, violent men and the system that enables them.

Black Mass is a decent enough mob movie. It’s a bit slow at times and the fact that it’s only two hours AND feels slow is telling. Johnny Depo is great as Whitey Bulger so that’s a plus. The cast is stacked too. Not an essential mob movie but a good watch nonetheless.

Johnny depp is genuinely disgusting in this movie, an unrecognizably eerie performance.

A film that I very much wanted to like, but just couldn’t. I saw the infamous country club shootout scene and decided to give the flick a watch. Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, I couldn’t really tell you anything I remember from the film aside from that. Boring, when a film made chronicling the rise and fall of Whitey Bulger should be anything but; not even Depp saves this one.

I rocked with this flick, however, it sometimes felt like it was a little all over the place. Drop still the man, Plemons still the man too

Decent film slightly ruined by the fact I knew the story behind it but still worth a watch, absolutely mental role played by Depp

I know it’s not the most popular film in general let alone in Cooper’s resume, but it’s one of the ones I return to most often. As a film the pacing and tightness of the storytelling goes up and down, and typical of Copper, there’s a soft ending to the film rather than a traditional Hollywood climax that doesn’t land quite as well as his other films. But like all great rewatchable films, the greatness here is all performs led.…

The star was a bit slow, but I enjoyed the bafoonery and bullshit the FBI was trying to keep up in the face of real FBI agents. Benedict Cumberbatch was a surprise to see and it was fun hearing his accent go from British to almost transatlantic. This movie was pure male stupidity that I enjoyed way more than I thought I would. This is what the Sopranos should’ve been.

There was a time when Edgerton was in every movie like in 2010. Couldn’t look away from his lips. Love this movie! What a deep class of actors! Johnny Depps makeup and contacts were not bad I promise! Those guys dont know what they’re talking about! Honestly a common mafia movie but it hits my spot. I’m rooting for Bulger! Every movie of Boston makes it look like a 2 story shit hole sorry maybe I’ll change. Boston Mafia Boss rise to power—strictly criminal.

Never seen someone with a receding hairline look so villainy. I mean we have bald villains but one with a receding hairline 💥 Johnny Depp played the character so well, he could have been playing joker with that too. Also, I love how John Connolly’s acting. It was Skyler White level of acting haha

I’d like to believe that whitey bulger got whacked with a padlock sock because of Depp’s portrayal.

This may be the most mid movie I ever saw. The problem with it for me is Johnny Depp’s contact lenses and his fake Boston accent gave me the uncanny valley and since the story revolves around him it was imparted ever so slightly to every acting performance in the movie. Also, another problem is I just recently saw the Departed and my mind kept making comparisons. At least that movie is anchored by people who are painfully Bostonian(Wahlberg and Damon). The Departed is just far and away the better movie.

Damn, this is really good! Johnny Depp is fantastic as Whitey Bulger, Scott Cooper did a great job directing the movie, Mark Mallouk and Jez Butterworth co-wrote an incredible script, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Rory Cochrane, Jesse Plemons, and Kevin Bacon provide amazing supporting roles, the killing scenes are so nasty and brutal, and yeah, I really enjoyed this one a lot. Definitely recommend this.

This movie is packed with star power, more so as it’s aged. I must have gotten a good deal, because I bought the DVD copy in 2016 instead of the Blu-ray. What was I thinking?! I actually like the transfer though, because it gives a realistic and gritty feel to the storyline with its less than crisp image and flat color scheme. It’s less than perfect, but actually works fine from a viewing experience aesthetic standpoint.

Solid crime drama trods familiar ground. Johnny Depp gives one of his best performances as Boston crime boss Whitey Bulger, although it’s hard not to be distracted by his blue contact lenses. Boston Crime has become its own genre this point. Supporting cast is fantastic.

A half baked crime thriller with some excellent scenes and performances. Black Mass is a 2015 crime thriller about James “Whitey” Bulger, an Irish mobster from South Boston who with the help of corrupt agents also became a sort of informant for the FBI in order to wipe out the Italian mafia and claim more territory through the 1970s and 80s. He also had a brother who was a very prominent senator and after everything fell apart, Whitey managed to…

we watched it for the boston accents- sometimes I just want to remember my childhood, ok when james whitey bulger was on the news I was disappointed they didnt have any of the parrots he was photographed with in this, or much about his time after boston the contacts seemed ghoulish (?)

sure whatever ig
-
B
why did they make him look like that?? whitey bulger didn’t look that fucking stupid. disappointed. i was hoping for something actually accurate to that time but this just seemed like guys wanting to make a mafia movie and so much of it was fictionalized to serve a plot that just didn’t exist to begin with. just watch the departed instead cuz they’re both fictionalized versions of the same fucking thing. at least the departed was fun to watch.
-
S
The films alright but Johnny Depp put in the shift of his life, watched it randomly on a plane and didn’t even realise it was him.
-
L
JOHNNY DEPP???is he in the room with us?? almost unrecognizable. I had to watch this for a film class and I’m so glad that I did. I think cinematically it’s great portrayal of what happened to the mobster James Bulger.
-
J
Johnny Depp can be pretty damn scary. Enjoyable to watch but only a few memorable scenes. These reviews are purely for my own records and so that I can remember exactly how I felt as I finished the movie, they are personal and not any attempt to professionally criticise the films I have watched.

A cool true story, told in an okay, if not meh, manner. As I’ve said, I always like the backdrop of any movie being Boston; it’s just everything else I don’t gel with as much. Like, Johnny Depp just doesn’t feel like Whitey to me. He’s not offensive, but it is a disappointment to see someone who I know can transform himself to be unrecognizable play this so plainly.

The reason Bulger suspected Tommy was a rat was because of how much he overplayed his hate for the cop. In the car Tommy was livid to an unnecessary point, and while in the bar he “protested too much” in a sense because he kept going on about wanting to kill the cop. Tommy was clearly trying to create as much distance between him and the police by overplaying his hatred of them. This is why Bulger and his crew…

It’s the Departed, but worse. More try-hard and prosthetics. Poor Jesse Plemmons getting roped into this one.
