Scott described the film as ‘anti-war, but pro-military’ and that is certainly true. There’s no single star-lead protagonist, but a team of individual heroes. There’s no sentimental bullshit; showing the families back home or close-ups of American flags fluttering in the wind. Instead Scott bravely removes these genre clichés and replaces them with the gritty reality of war. Typically of Scott there’s an incredible attention to detail, with even something as small as a hot shell casing burning a soldier’s skin reflecting the terrors of war. The film is, in every aspect, beautiful in its creation. From the diversified camera angles of Sławomir Idziak’s breathtaking cinematography and the exemplary slow-motion sequences of Pietro Scalia’s edit to the sound team’s elaborate design and Hans Zimmer’s stunning score, Black Hawk Down is a gloriously immersive piece of cinema, a joy to watch and ultimately a masterpiece of its genre.

65 In terms of ‘that guy’ casting, this is up there with JFK and Oppenheimer. For the first thirty minutes, every other scene reveals a new famous face to freak out about. Then Ridley Scott decides that’s enough for an introduction and the rest of the film is tactical sensory overload, with militarized abstraction so vivid and skilled that it inspired a whole new era of Michael Bay’s style by proxy. Not a great movie necessarily, but a highly influential item in frenzied action cinema and Xbox 360 first person shooters.

This was probably my fourth or fifth time seeing the film, first time since college and jesus christ what a movie. I remember the first time I watched the film was when I was around 13 when me and my buddies rented it and watched it at a sleepover. We all groaned at the sight of Orlando Bloom’s annoying face and we cheered and laughed when he fell from the chopper which is probably the the only argument I’ll ever make in favor of following age ratings. This latest watch was fascinating because it speaks to how much I’ve changed. Back in college I knew about a lot of the bullshit in the movie, but it didn’t affect my viewing…

hoo-ah i guess? i don’t know what to say really – it’s a very technically impressive movie but the idea that this is anti-war feels like such nonsense to me. it’s happy to abandon facts and nuance to show the american soldiers (who i could barely tell apart despite recognising most of the pretty stacked cast) as courageous, brave, stoic warriors for peace and virtue (?!), willing to do all of the killing necessary to rescue their brothers in arms from a swelling mass of nameless somali soldiers. i just really struggle to get invested in war movie narratives when they’re presented like this (see also: 1917, dunkirk).

Played better for me as a teen when the idea of “what if Saving Private Ryan was put through the Bay/Tony/Bruckheimer filter” was easier to divorce from the queasier elements but this is some of the most technically impressive combat porn ever. It basically defined how this type of film would be stylized for 2 decades and counting and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t still get a gnarly thrill out of the gruesomely sustained tactical survival setpieces that border on horror, which is a double-edged sword because that’s also exactly what’s troubling about it. The comparisons I’ve seen people make to Starship Troopers or Night of the Living Dead with regard to how this shoots its setting…

So cool the way the US Army brings hope and freedom everywhere it lands. I wish they could bring peace to all nations, but not all nations have oil lol. America is the bestest planet in all of the nation.

This really isn’t my cup of tea so I’ll be brief. The movie is incredibly tense and visceral, although it doesn’t quite reach the level of something like Saving Private Ryan. It is also mostly on the right side of its politics with regards to war in general and the Battle of Mogadishu specifically (this half is a bit fuzzier). But for me there’s just way too much of this: Shot: people shooting guns Reverse-shot: bullets ricocheting off of stuff Shot: people shooting guns Reverse-shot: people falling over Shot: people shooting guns Reverse-shot: stuff exploding I don’t mean to disparage the film or its fans, I just prefer a different style of action movie. Scott’s fetish for and power over this material is staggering; structurally it’s his ZODIAC, for good or ill, buffered by Idziak’s incredibly tactile transmissions of hot metal and black smoke. furthermore it plays today like an accidentally prescient microcosm of blowback from the 12 years of American hegemonic intervention that’s come since (and reflects our complicated response to same). the first act repeatedly questions both our and the soldiers’ relationship to the violence they’re about to inflict before necessarily tossing that “out the window” for a purely subjective survival narrative. in order to protect themselves and their fellows, the soldiers can simply no longer allow themselves to consider the political ramifications of this event or the earthshaking loss of life…

The cast for this is absolutely insane. Honestly is distracting from the plot when I see a young A lister or B lister every 5 minutes. The film is really great

A tough watch, but for all the right reasons. Casts a light on the extreme levels of bravery shown by American special forces when a peacekeeping mission in Africa goes wrong and quickly turns into a survival/recovery operation. According to special forces soldiers, this is one of the most accurate war movies that exists today.

It was pretty good but I’m not a huge fan of war films unfortunately. But! It was based on a true story and it wasn’t that bad

Hmm kinda sucking off the us military and felt like some weird propaganda at the beginning but it changes up pretty quick.(love when I hear some stone temple pilots in movies)

Not a history lesson nor a meaningful look at American imperialism, like a lot of Ridley Scott movies it works best if you remove the politics in play, as an action movie… it fucking BANGS

What a strange film: Compelling subject matter bowdlerized by Jerry Bruckheimer, yet beautifully crafted by Ridley Scott. It’s got one foot in the 1990s action genre and another in the 2000s war genre. By accident of fate, it was the first war film released after 9/11, and thus became an ominous warning of the future. The script is poor, as the movie only intermittently is concerned with the motivations of the Somalis. I can also see why some called this…

Why does our government insist on inserting itself in every other country’s problems but our own. This doesn’t mean these people aren’t heroes, however, for what cause? Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Syria, and Somalia can we honestly say it was all worth it? That we made a lasting impact and those who died did so for a greater good? I can only think of one country that truly benefits and it isn’t ours. Mazel tov.

The GOAT, my favourite war movie by a mile. So many scenes that give me goosebumps and the way it’s all shot makes you feel like you’re down with TF ranger the whole way. Sure, it’s a propaganda piece but it doesn’t feel like a lot of the post 9/11 war movies i.e American Sniper or Lone Survivor and there is an angle to it where you could say the Americans done nothing and achieved little. The action is gritty…

One of the more polarizing films (for me at least) I’ve seen lately. It’s a technical marvel, but what was that script?

On one hand, this movie has some of the best big budget war scenes of all time. You really feel inside this chaotic visceral moment watching these guys get pinned down, shot at, having limbs blown off etc. Every depiction of war for about a decade after is pulling from how this mvoie is shot and stagged, not just in other films but in TV, video games, even how the news reported on Iraq. But that’s the other thing holding…

The first time I saw this move I had it all planned out. In middle school I skipped school and set up a tv and my PlayStation 2 in our pool/toy shed (powered by a very conspicuous extension chord). Watched it two times in a row… what a cast?! Tom Sizemore is the war movie GOAT.

Not much to say, had good action scenes. Was alright. Not Ridley Scott’s best or worst.

Alex Garland’s 2025 film Warfare is a much tighter and more effective version of what many attribute to Scott’s film here – depicting what feels like the reality of war. Black Hawk Down? Impeccably photographed and yet so dull – with wall to wall gunfire, explosions and barked out tactical jargon punctuated by occasional formulaic dialogue, it sure does wear you down but perhaps not in the way the filmmaker intended.
-

Was gonna say this is one of the more important movies of the 21st century but apparently it leaves out alot of historical context for you know movie purposes. Either way i still think its important people watch this sort of thing. Raw realistic warfare pulling zero punches in a more modern era we can somewhat relate too. This is also one of the most intense movies i have ever seen Ridley Scott directs the shit out of it.
-
C
At the risk of sounding reductionary, Black Hawk Down is the apex of what several Michael Bay films aspire to be, although aren’t necessarily capable of. Ridley Scott directs the hell out of this. It’s so smooth to follow and is exactly what I’d have preferred to see from Warfare (2025). It’s not nearly nuanced in its messaging enough compared to the similarly toned Kingdom of Heaven. Besides a few glancing instances, this movie is far less concerned with the…

This one has always been on my radar and I finally got around to it for Ridley/Dog Stars prep. Honestly a bit of a let down as it felt like extremely standard war movie stuff with nothing that makes it stand out. The young cast is crazy filled with stars and it’s well directed but overall seems like it’ll be forgettable for me personally.

When I think of this movie I already think of what a deep cast it has, but I guess it’s been so long since I’ve seen this movie I didn’t realize or forgot that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Tom Hardy(credited as Thomas Hardy), Ty Burrell all appear in the movie. The film holds up well as a harrowing depiction of the horrors of warfare. The production values you come to expect with Ridley Scott are top notch.

Beau, belles images, scénario terrible pour le coup, rien ne se passe comme prévu et c’est ça qui fait sa beauté. Ça prend bien le spectateur et ça fout le bide. Mais ça reste simple.

A realistic war film that shows every side of war, the good and the bad. The settings are stunning, and the war in Somalia is not widely known. Some scenes are very graphic and show body parts, creating a realistic and brutal atmosphere. The film offers a mix of tears, moments of joy, tension, and action. All in all, a very good film that confirms one thing above all: war is hell. Great film.

Pretty good movie and some great set design. My only complaint is some of the action and direction was a little Michael Bay-ey but besides that it was a fine retelling of battle of mogadishu

A movie i couldn’t bother to finish, which is rare for me. War propaganda at its best , America is the only good force against the scary Muslim brown people at its worse. The omitted help of other forces such as Pakistan is historically inaccurate. But what can you say when the DOD lends its military equipment to a movie that was filmed in the midst of the lead up to iraq and Afghanistan.
