“You’re not even gonna kiss her?” “No” “I’ll see you around!” “You never know.” Because it’s a genre film it’ll never carry the same cache as something like “here’s looking at you kid” in the public eye, but who cares. The romance between Gracie Law and Jack Burton *is* just as good.

Me watching this as a kid: Jack Burton rocks. He’s just like me only bigger and stronger. John Carpenter: Jack Burton is a bumbling fool. He’s the dim-witted and self-aggrandizing comic relief character instead of the true protagonist. Me: I hope one day I get strong.

93 Few moments in movie-history give me as much pleasure as when Jack Burton and Wang Chi talk gibberish as they stroll right into the bad guy’s lair, thinking they got past security. The fact that Jack is holding a home-telephone for some reason is the icing on the cake. A classic in confusion.

1) what the actual fuck 2) the abrupt ‘creature scene’ at the one hour mark alone warrants at least a 4+ star rating (and on a similar note, fuck yes to the film’s final scene) 3) you must experience The Guardian 4) you must experience the entity which I can only describe as self-destructive-balloon-man 5) what the actual fuck

Forgive me if I sound upset, but over the past few years I’ve seen a lot of takes from non-asians talking about asian film and asian people in an awful and, quite frankly, weirdly fetishistic way. Why do I keep seeing people talk about how it’s “so so sad and upsetting to me as a foreigner what china has become today BUT(!!!) omg that’s totally not a good reason to harass and brutally assault asians even though the criticisms against the country are sooo valid! btw asian films are so special and their country is so beautiful~~” Now, this is of course a grossly exaggerated example, but this is the DNA of a lot of the “””discourse””” from the pandemic…

i like to imagine that Jack Burton’s truck radio is not even plugged in and that any and all of his musings are just shouted out into the void for no one to hear just like every other word he says

A beautiful film about how the dumbest guy is usually the white interloper and the overwhelming power of green eyes. The best costumes of the 1980s.

Saw this one in theaters last night, great, great fun, was bouncing in my seat and shadowboxing during the opening credits when that Porkchop Express theme drops. Out of all the American movies made by white people about the exotic orient and the magical powers of Asians, this one is by far the least racist, if for no reason other than the fact that not one, but TWO of the Asian characters actually get pussy, which pretty much never happens in any American movie. Also, it reverses the usual trope by having Kurt Russell as the buffoonish, bumbling, comic relief sidekick to Dennis Dun as the brave, romantic hero.

A cult classic! This film is a little bit of a fever dream, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great movie!

I LOVE Kurt Russell’s B-Movie line deliveries. His enunciations and inflections are palpably charming. I NEED to watch Escape From New York next. Appreciate Goth Chinese Jesus being a power player and copping two wives at the same altar. Also first film that I’ve watched stoned since top surgery :0)))!! Wished there were subtitles included in the DVD — sometimes I couldn’t even interpret whole ass English dialogue Lowkey why the fuck does Gracie Law exist?? Bc she happens to live in Chinatown and has white savior Nancy Drew complex??

I thought it was gonna be a dicier time tbh. Still middle of the road Carpenter for me, what was going on in martial arts cinema elsewhere always makes Hollywood action seem poor but it was funny and imaginative

Martial arts/horror/Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Comedy mash-up masterpiece. Takes it turn as my favorite Carpenter depending on the day. Jack Burton is an icon.

Woke king

Big fan of the fact that half Kurt Russell’s dialogue was questions

Every scene felt like an escalation of the last. Jack Burton is the most compelling ‘himbo’ leading man I have ever seen in an action film and its so clear how many subsequent films were trying to reach his highs. The sense of humour feels very ahead of time.

By far one of my favourite cult classics, the film was definitely ahead of it’s time, deconstructing white-saviour stereotypes but still keeping it’s classic action film charm. Jack Burton being the bumbling sidekick despite his All-Amercian action hero archetype, combined with self-aware humour and the true protagonist of Wang Chi made this film feel refreshing. Not to mention the at the time bold fusion of fantasy and Chinese mythology definitely sprung out to me with themes of taoism, traditional martial…

Initially I was not sure what to make of this. Is it a king-fu movie? Comedy? Adventure? Then I realized it was all of them. Surprisingly funny and exciting. Big Goonies vibes for me. And Jack is a hilariously incompetent hero.

I’m sorry, what was this movie. I won’t say it didn’t age well because I’m not sure it was ever not super racist. It is kinda strange in a real interesting way. There were many scenes I was like ‘what the Heller is going on?!’ In a way it kept me guessing which was entertaining, and the acting and set was cool. But yeah, it made no sense.

Has some of my favorite sets, I mean that huge fight in the neon room is so fucking cool. Probably the funniest Carpenter movie.

What if Han Solo was an idiot and had to fight a wizard? Tune in tonight at 9.

Ridiculous movie that explains nothing at all, just go with whatever’s happening. Pretty hilarious.

The most realistic action scene ever. I would shoot the ceiling and parts of it would fall on my head swell.

Speaking of Tremors. Big Trouble In Little China gets 10 Insurance doesn’t cover leaving your truck in an alleys out of 10 A whole girls?!

What was that? 6.9 on the Richter scale Even when Kurt Russell plays a comic relief donut of a character, he still comes off as a badass.

A lot of Hollywood films with mainly Asian casts feel the need to have a white guy stand in. The idea of a bumbling idiot trucker who’s only part of the movie to get his truck back and make a bit of money he won from a bet, who thinks that he’s an action hero only to get embarrassed at every turn is absolutely hilarious

All the budget went to the bizarre department and not a cent was wasted

I didn’t get it on first watch but yeah this movie is funny as fuck

Listen I’m not saying their is a perfect movie, but Big Trouble in Little China is a pretty perfect movie

“Wait a minute wait a minute I am a reasonable guy but I’ve just experienced some very unreasonable things” This is probably the first John carpenter movie I ever saw, I used to watch it with my parents when it was on TV so I’m biased, but this movies hilarious. Probably right next to Starship Troopers on the pantheon of movies where you really gotta understand that it’s a joke going in.
