Similarly to the first movie, mostly a completely unremarkable buddy cop procedural/actioner plot hijacked by two dueling creative personalities: Eddie Murphy’s mercilessly unrestrained, seemingly endless hyper-active impression riffing no matter the context of the scene (which Brest had more skill for incorporating into the charming relaxed hangout vibes) and Tony Scott’s over-stylized 80s post-Top Gun/Miami Vice pop music video aesthetic frenzy of color and destruction that he plays for mostly straight and crudely macho action movie thrills. You can tell right away from all the ominous synths and stylish slow-motion inserts of that opening heist followed by the suiting up montage where Murphy is reintroduced looking like he’s just walked off the set of a Ferrari commercial that we’re in…

One of the most ego-driven, indifferently-produced films in the history of the medium and a stunning artifact of its time, both of which are indicated in its first few minutes by A) Brigitte Nielsen; B) a shot of Eddie Murphy in a Speedo with his production company credit directly over his dick, and C) Axel Foley being totally awesome driving a $67,000 Italian luxury sportscar through Detroit Motor City. Generally plotless, obnoxious with violence, frequently offensive, and packed with wildly stupid shtick absolutely nobody would fall for, it contains the foundational DNA of future masterpiece BAD BOYS II. I adore this movie.

Rotten Tomatoes: 49% Metacritic Metascore: 46 IMDB: 6.6 62/100 Axel Foley:”Yo man, we gotta talk, seriously. Who do you think you are, Clint Eastwood? Dirty Rosewood?” Beverly Hills Cop 2 feels like a classic case of a sequel trying to go bigger without necessarily going better. Eddie Murphy is still entertaining as Axel Foley, but I noticed his performance this time seems more focused on big laughs and showboating rather than the natural charm that made him so likable in the first film. He still has some great moments, but something feels a bit off. This one is all about Judge Reinhold. Judge Reinhold doing his Judge Reinhold faces, Judge Reinhold doing his Judge Reinhold voices, Judge Reinhold with his big guns, Judge Reinhold doing his Judge Reinhold laughing, Judge Reinhold driving a cement truck while reminding me of that truck scene with Robert Patrick in T2, Judge Reinhold doing his Judge Reinhold poses, Judge Reinhold: the film.

Action!: The Scott Brothers – 80s Never Dies With Tony At The Helm Behold! The epitome of what comes to mind when you think of a sequel. A much bigger, louder, dumber, but also less effective follow up to the original. Having heard so many negative things about this I don’t believe they are totally warranted since, even though it doesn’t quite hit the mark like the first one and the excess does work against it more than for it, it’s still an enjoyable movie. Even though not all jokes land, Murphy still managed to tickle my funny bone and make me chuckle here and there. The villains aren’t bad, but I was bothered by their name because it sounded…

Marginally funnier than the first but somehow WAY more predictable and the narrative is extremely boring at times. Otherwise Eddie Murphy is still my GOAT 🔥 6.1/10

Totally charming, totally unnecessary sequel that basically rehashes the first one but hey it does a pretty good job of that. Most of the time you wish you were just watching the original but there were a few good flourishes. Love that they decided to make Billy a weirdo, more sequels should just be weird.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 does what every sequel should, it takes everything from the first film and turns it up a notch, bigger set piece’s and action sequences, but that’s also why I don’t think it lives up to the heights of the first film, Don’t get me wrong it’s still a massively enjoyable film and is really well made, in fact it is more or less on par with the first film, I just think there’s to much of…

Eddie Murphy and Tony Scott is an odd pairing. Two of my favorite flavors that don’t always entirely work together, at least not at this stage of their respective careers. I still have more fun with this than not, even if it feels like they were making it up as they went along a lot of the time. Too bad Ronny Cox was busy filming RoboCop for most of the production but I love RoboCop so it’s okay.

Classico action stile anni 80 con un divertente Eddie Murphy, che iniziava a far sentire la sua caratteristica risata… Qui abbiamo anche la ex signora Stallone fra i cattivi, che si vuole di più?

While the first film, “Beverly Hills Cop”, had a balance of comedy and action, with Eddie Murphy’s charm, the sequel feels like a less inspired copy of the formula. Eddie Murphy is still charismatic, and Axel Foley has some good moments, but the story is pretty banal, and the humor doesn’t have the same spontaneity anymore.

The 52 Week Movie Challenge Challenge #33: A sequel Come on, folks! It’s not that bad! Yes, it’s nonsensical, but so was the first film, only there’s more action, more stakes, and more humorous moments. It’s pure silly fun! Axel Foley is his usual reckless, wisecracking self. Eddie Murphy isn’t phoning it in with the comedy here and it feels very natural to me just like in the first film. My GOAT Billy has more of a spotlight this time,…

Definitely not as good as the first one, but this is still a fun, cheesy, 80’s action police romp with plenty of funny moments. If you’ve already seen and liked the first one, I’d say it’s worth watching this! It gives you a more of the same at just slightly lower quality 😁

People don’t talk about how good a sequel this movie is but it’s goooood. Axel is up to no good and back in Beverly Hills. Strong plot. Funny moments. Axel Foley music. Couldn’t ask for a better sequel. Unfortunately, the series begins to fall apart from here on out. 8/10

“You just hit a squad car!” “I know, I know. It’s okay, I know the guy. He’s a jerk.” F**king love this movie. Everything the first film did, but to me, it was taken to another level. Much funnier than the first, much better writing. The Flanderization of Axel’s character is actually a big plus, he’s completely Bugs Bunny at this point. Just hopping around sets, monologuing for 2 minutes, it’s hilarious. This whole story is way more cartoony, but it works better this way. 3.5 stars for Judge Reinhold’s cool reptile apartment and psychopathic tendencies.

In the context of the first film, this doesn’t really track as a good sequel for multiple reasons. The new villains and side characters just aren’t as memorable. This is kind of like if the BHC 1 boys were caught in a gas leak, but it’s really more like a cociane leak. Axel is a mean spirited dick in this and Rosewood inexplicably becomes a psychotic gun nut and it’s so out of left field. That being said, if divorced…

Auch Teil 2 versprüht für mich dieselbe Energie und dieselbe Freude wie Teil 1. Hier gibt es nun einiges mehr an Action und die ist auch wunderbar inszeniert. The soundtrack’s pumping. The bullets are flying. And Axel Foley is still the coolest cop in Beverly Hills. In a world where Beverly Hills still looks spotless but somebody forgot to tell the criminals. Axel Foley is back! He’s still loud. When Captain Bogomil is gunned down while investigating the mysterious “Alphabet Crimes,” Axel heads back to…

A bigger, slightly worse rehash of the original. Tony Scott seems the obvious choice to direct the sequel and the aesthetic works. Still has its moments and great Eddie Murphy bits. Climax and villains feel borrowed from every 80’s action film I’ve seen and preferred the low-key fun of the first but this was fairly inoffensive (minus Hefner etc).

With Tony Scott’s stylistic flourishes grafted on, how will Beverly Hills Cop II convince that this should be a franchise? Well, not very well. The movie has to go to great pains to get Foley back to Beverly Hills, and almost every scenario in which Murphy/Foley must improv/bullshit his way through something, it feels lazy. Like, ‘this is just a movie that’s good enough lol’… Scott is more interested in the actual crime plot and the action. And possibly the…

People playing volleyball, the same song playing over and over again in a 10 minute segment, beautiful sunset shots and a great soundtrack. This movie just screams Tony Scott from the moment it starts. It has everyone of his signature trademarks and they manage to elevate this movie in a way no other director could. I couldn’t get hooked on the film itself but I could watch Tony Scott’s gorgeous sunset shots till the day I die. It’s like art to me.

One of the biggest strengths of Beverly Hills Cop II is that it understands why the first movie worked. It brings Axel Foley back, reunites him with Billy Rosewood and John Taggart, and lets that chemistry carry the movie. Even though it follows a lot of the same story beats as the original, these are characters you genuinely enjoy spending time with, so it never feels like a chore revisiting them. Eddie Murphy slips right back into Axel Foley like…

This was a solid good sequel to Beverly Hills Cop. I would even perhaps say it was a little funnier too with its jokes. Firstly, let’s talk about Tony Scott’s direction, I am a huge fan of the way he used to make his movies with his own style and kinetic energy while also looking and feeling more cinematic – and Beverly Hills Cop 2 has that in droves. Riding high on the success of Top Gun, Scott treats this sequel like a slick, high-octane music video, bathing the entire movie in a perpetual golden-hour glow and blinding neon light. The storyline is completely incoherent. The real joy lies in the subtle, meta-cinematic middle finger pointed directly at Sylvester Stallone, who notoriously dropped out of the original project. In the end, it’s a chaotic, cocaine-fueled relic of 1980s studio indulgence. If you’re a die-hard fan of peak Eddie Murphy running completely wild without a director like John Landis to restrain him, it’s a blast. If not, it’s just a gorgeous, incredibly noisy trainwreck.

A definite downgrade to the first one, but there’s still plenty of laughs and iconic moments. Judge Reinhold is the highlight of this movie, Rosewood’s newfound confidence following from the events of the first movie has gotta be one of the funniest bits in these films. He seems to be the only character that thinks he’s in a drama movie, and he thinks he’s the leading man.
-
P
Foley is slightly more energetic here…more silly impromptu character riffs to get out of situation. (I’m the pool cleaner…etc…) But, he’s also a bit less charming. There’s more ‘bitches’ and ‘dick’. The bad guys are meh as is the peril. Still…plenty of yearning for the horrible and cool eighties to be had.

Add me to the list of people who think 2 > 1. Tony directs the shit out of this. Everything is golden hour all the time, every room looks like it’s filled with firework smoke, and at the end it truly is. A big flashing DRIVE SAFE! on the Chrysler plant sign precedes everyone driving every vehicle like the road is made of banana peels. He’s the best for a reason. The game between literal Playboy models is a DISTANT second for horniest volleyball scene in his filmography.

I like how the first time the Axel F theme plays in this movie is right after Eddie Murphy says ‘Allahu Akbar’. Pretty good sequel. It was definitely made in the 80s. This could’ve been a contemporary satire of said decade. But it’s not. I think it exists just for Eddie Murphy to act zany, and they found a suitable excuse (i.e., plot) for these zany moments. I hope Billy goes completely psycho in the next one.

A great, enjoyable film. The main issue I have with this is that it takes everything that was so good about the first film and tries to dial it up a notch. It ends up feeling a little bit forced.

83%. Eddie Murphy was great again as Axel Murphy. It was fun seeing Judge, John, and Ronny again they great in their roles. Also, I think Karla Fry was great in this film as well. Both villains were great in this film. The movie wasn’t as good as the first one but it was still good and lots of fun. Hopefully, the third one stays at this level and doesn’t dip anymore.

- Synopsis
