The Rock DJ sequence alone is an easy five stars and the action sequence near the end where he performs at a festival I refuse to Google but have decided through their accents is called Net Worth, bumps it up to a 7 out of 5. Watched this completely alone in an AMC in Pittsburgh and it upsets me that Americans won’t get to see it in a packed theater simply because no one “knows who Robbie Williams is.” Okay? It’s me, The Guy Who Does Not Like Music Biopics here to report that this contains every music biopic cliche I hate and yet somehow it works. I will be yelling about this movie to anyone within earshot for the next year but the most important things about it to me personally 1. Liam and Noel Gallagher are characters in the movie 2. Robbie Williams with his skin ripped off from the Rock DJ video appears but in monkey form and then takes part in a massive violent battle scene at Knebworth with thousands of monkey Robbies 3. it actually has some of the most transcendent musical sequences I’ve seen in years (turns out Michael Gracey does indeed have the juice)

I have been thinking about the final my way sequence since I first watched this and I thoroughly enjoyed this movie on my 2nd watch. I do not know who Robbie Williams is and even after googling I’m not sure it helped but this rips and is such a unique idea. The monkey movie made me cry and kept me engulfed for 2 hours of runtime.

Heavy handed, cliche, ugly, and the music is garbage. This is a movie made so stupid viewers can feel smart when deciphering the most obvious and literal-minded choice ever. When I look at this I don’t see art, I see a commercial dumpster-fire that doesn’t aspire or achieve profundity or authenticity.

Yeah, I don’t care anymore. Musical biopics are such a frustrating genre but as far as the genre goes, I don’t think it gets better. It’s creative, catchy, visually stunning, and most importantly: Entertaining.

7.6/10 it’s actually a really good movie. it could be due to the fact i love take that and robbie williams music. But the actual story and filming is really cool. the whole monkey/ chimp aspect of things is a really cool metaphor for how he seems himself as a sort of animal. overall a really enjoyable experience

Debo confesar que la empecé medio prejuiciosa con la cuestión del chimpancé. Encima, veníamos de una época con una cartelera bastante monística con El planeta de los simios, Monkey Man, El mono… Sin embargo, terminó siendo el gran acierto narrativo de la pelicula. No solo nos permite escapar de ciertos vicios de las biopics, si no que además nos acerca a las dos imágenes que Williams posee de sí mismo. Frente a la inseguridad y el autorrechazo, construye el relato de su unicidad, de su encanto y de ser, en definitiva, un performing mAnkey.
