White audiences were not ready for Bamboozled in 2000 and, to be honest, things have not really changed. This critical and commercial failure has now, widely, been reappraised as the masterpiece it is – but still upsets the right people (the sign of good political filmmaking). It is a film easy to describe as ahead of its time, but in reality a film that was so of its time (and continues to speak to this time) that so many could not handle it. This is, by some margin, Spike Lee’s most audacious and combative work. It is a razor sharp satire that specifically alludes to Network and The Producers, in which an upper-class, Black TV writer pitches and produces a…

Watch this back to back with Blackkklansman and weep for how Hollywood hurt Spike Lee. A full appreciation of this film cannot be attained unless one sees the confused and noticeably insecure reviews that accompanied it when it came out, only then can you say to have enjoyed the full experience.

Spike Lee is mad as hell, and he’s not gonna take it anymore. Aside from being a perfect way for him to riff on Sidney Lumet’s already timeless Network, the sort of punch that Spike Lee manages to pack into Bamboozled can still be felt even today as we look back upon a culturally ignored perspective within the entertainment industry. Being arguably his most confrontational film since Do the Right Thing, what Spike Lee brings to the table in Bamboozled feels all too damning, much to that point it leaves one wondering if we’ve truly progressed from anything of the sort ever being repeated again no matter how much we tell ourselves things are getting better. It’s very on-the-nose, as per the…

Dunno about that ending but goddamn, Spike Lee was not pulling any punches here. Exactly what I needed to watch right now. Extremely biting and sharp, if not a little bit messy with Damon Wayans’ character (not to mention the strange accent.) The scenes of the audience interacting with Honeycutt near the end are straight up horrifying to watch, Savion Glover and Jada Pinkett Smith are so good here, and it’s awesome to watch Tommy Davidson kill it in a serious role. So curious what Lee thinks about the legacy of Chappelle’s Show and what Chappelle thinks about this movie (I know Lee was in a sketch on the show, but still.) Perfect evidence of the need for a best casting Oscar as this movie’s casting director deserves some award for getting Michael Rapaport to play himself. Just decided for my next birthday I am going to rent out a theater and watch all my white friends watch this movie!

One of Lee’s most formally audacious and assaultive films, and as scathing a media satire as there has ever been. An angry, ugly, completely batshit reworking of Network and The Producers into a perversely funny and horrifying vision of America’s historical racism maintaining itself in images/entertainment/industry and the illusion of choice that white money gives to black artists. “Look at what you contributed to!” “Keep ’em laughing.” Not over the choice to film most of this in crummy DV (which make the bland office spaces and heightened Wayans performance feel even weirder, and make the eventual snuff and essay montage destination even uglier) and then the images of the modern minstrel show on this very colorful 16mm so that it uncomfortably pops off the screen! God Ellen Kuras, and Spike Lee who found the only good use for Michael Rapaport anyone ever will. Full discussion on episode 167 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.

Bamboozled is truly an upsetting experience to sit through, although with a daring premise like this, you would’ve expected Spike Lee to be at his most provocative, trolly mode from miles away. It’s ultimately a jab at the money-grubbing Hollywood, and the faceless crowd hiding behind their invisible “black face” who feed off black misery as entertainment, whether knowingly or not. Technical wise this is as stripped down as can be. Thematically, however, Bamboozled is arguably Lee’s biggest risk of his career. Bamboozled definitely falls into the dank comedy category, chronicling the surprising rise and deadly fall of a variety show featuring controversial blackface antics. It’s also a psychological journey of how a black producer and multiple black performers grapple…

One of the most abrasive and assaultive films ever made, bold, raw, provocation at its most disturbingly satirical. More relevant than ever, I feel we if there is much to be stated yet I feel as if I would simply be restating the already poignant and perfect scenes back to you rather than adding any context or further nuance. Takes literal visual language to a new extreme of visual visceral abrasion. Absolute perfection however, indefinitely one of my best watches…

Not how I expected that to go… Extremely layered and complex representation of how stereotyping, racism, corporatism, tokenism, and the media all come together in the most sinister of ways, always to recycle and exploit whatever filth sits at the bottom of the barrel. A companion piece to Network (1976) that not only deepens our understanding of its critique of mass media, but broadens it. This film is seething with passion, anger, and frustration. Spike Lee was mad as hell, and wasn’t gonna take it anymore. Still relevant today.

Think along the lines of ‘Hollywood Shuffle’ except 10 times angrier. I can’t believe Spike Lee got this made, left me speechless. There’s some added melodrama that does detract a bit from the momentum established by the rest of the film, but it’s still amazing. The progression from Do the Right Thing to Malcolm X to this, then the regression back to Black Klansman needs to be studied. Way underseen, and one of Spike Lee’s best.

Michael Rapaport playing himself Needs to be seen to be believed. It’s one of the most outrageous and shocking films ever made, fuelled by so much rage at how white people have consistently fucked with black creatives and how racist media often is. The premise alone is brutal, but Lee takes it so, so, so much further, making every scene of the minstrel show the most sickening depiction of racist caricatures that you’ve ever seen. But outside of the show,…

I love the way Spike Lee takes from other films. The hate and love speech in The Night of the Hunter and the way he uses that in Do The Right Thing. Howard Beale’s “I’M NOT GONNA TAKE IT ANYMORE!!” speech being used in this film by Manray. Satisfying re-contextualisations that far exceed the seemingly random homages that Tarantino gets so much praise for I just love the anger driving this film. Right up until the very first rehearsal of…

Odd and uneven and full of interesting choices but is scathing in its satire and critique of America and modern society, Spike eviscerates the anti-blackness central to this country’s existence. Very uncomfortable at times, as Spike pulls few punches here. The ending is a lot but leaves you on a bitter, sad note that doesn’t fill you with much hope for this country seeing the 25 years that have passed since this film.

It was hard to think of a way to review this movie, the script isn’t that good, the acting is pretty bad at times, the narration is distracting and annoying, and I have no idea where the $10 million budget went. The End of the movie is extremely odd. Been a while since a movie made me feel sick to my stomach. So funny (until it isn’t), bleak, ferocious, and unsparing that I’m kinda legit astonished it didn’t kill Spike Lee’s career. It made me like a Terence Blanchard score which is a pretty remarkable achievement in itself. Maybe the nerviest American film of the 21st century? Fun Fact: Michael Rapaport was never officially cast in this and didn’t know he was in a movie, he just wandered on set and started yelling slurs and Lee decided to film him.

Hard to put into words my thoughts on this one – but like so many have mentioned, that ending is impactful. I wanted to read more about the cultural impact, or how people have taken this film, and found the Wikipedia page sorely lacking. But did find – Ashley Clark’s “Bamboozled: New Millennium, Same Bullshit” which was excellent.

Spike Lee was PISSED OFF while making this film. This film is pretty much beat for beat the same as Network but with way more anger towards the industry. The biggest problem with it is the camera work. That’s cause they had to shoot on a very small budget, so they used early digital cameras for it and it sometimes looked rough. It’s only a big issue when they use natural lighting like the sun. The scenes shot on stage…

I hate to criticize Spike Lee, but this needed a bigger budget (and a better editor) to land the message. But would it have made a difference to the message to have seen Peerless’s original sketches? If it had, maybe that (and not the corporate meddling *always* happening off-screen) would have distracted me from the otherwise-clear message: satirization of racist images only propagates them.

Might be my favorite Spike Lee movie. Poignant and consistent throughout the whole movie. The use of montage at the end was spectacular but I’m not sure how I feel about the other parts of the ending. ultimately this movie is still relevant today considering the success of the 2023 American Fiction and the ongoing mischaracterization of Black people on traditional and social media.

Crazy that Spike Lee thought everyone would come after him and Denzel for making Malcolm X, and yet just a few years later he rolls out this joint… There’s no denying this is an imperfect film. The choices in how scenes are lit, blocked and scored are often not quite right. The scripted dialogue is frequently too loose and its delivery occasionally uncertain, and the characters’ responses to the absurdity of the world they inhabit range too widely – it…

Bamboozled is a daring take on institutional racism in entertainment that goes completely in your face with its modern minstrel show. With a clear influence from The Producers, Spike Lee takes Bamboozled 10 steps further with dissecting the implications of glorifying deeply held stereotypes and dehumanization of Black people in America. To top it off, it’s pretty freaking funny — not just the comedy, but the early audience reactions and the reactions you may feel within yourself watching it (I…

The foremost critical American text of the new millennium. Bamboozled is one of the few pieces of media to understand our current politics of aesthetics and performance, versus the traditional politics of history and morals; you can ignore historical traumas at will, as long as the results gain popular acceptance or even encouragement. What makes it hold up so well a quarter-century later is Spike Lee’s disinterest in the shock value of presenting the minstrel show, because he knew we were…

Again, Spike Lee joints continue to be well rolled. Watching Peerless descent into blackface and how easily the world writ large accepts minstrel shows back into the cultural zeitgeist feels way too real in the current era of AI impersonations of black people with stereotypical scenarios. The quality of the filmmaking is obfuscated through what feels like the same camera that shot Inland Empire. Similar vibes of horror as that movie, just more grounded.

The commentary is relatively simple but effective, and seeing the growth of the show and affects on the world around it is interesting. It drags a good bit by the end, it feels like I was just waiting for it to get to the point. Overal a good film, and my white guilt meter was going off the charts.
