Reasons why this is one of the absolute best movies Disney has ever made and will ever make: 1) The animation. There’s a very real energy and style to every frame of this film, one that you don’t see a lot with increasingly homogeneous CGI animation. What makes this work is that, despite all of the blockiness of the character designs, everything feels fluid and carefully mapped out. Animation essentially becomes a tool of character design: every move, every pose, every expression tells you more about the character. 2) The cinematography. While we’re on the subject of visual design, let’s talk about how gorgeous this movie’s cinematography is. What gets me about this movie every time is the way it…

I can’t believe how amazing this movie is. Then again, these are the directors behind Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, and The Madagascar Penguins in a Christmas Caper, so I can’t believe I didn’t expect this to be amazing.

When I first watched this movie as a child I got so obsessed I started studying Latin. I read Plato. It took me at least 15 years to grasp either. Anyway, fast forward 25+ years, I still find it fascinating, funny, and a less animistic and more gnostic Pocahontas (1995).

“You are a scholar, are you not? Judging from your diminished physique and large forehead, you are suited for nothing else.” Fun fact: Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy, was the primary production designer and visual concept artist for the movie. Disney hand drawn animation, beautiful. Disney animated features used to be a real staple. Then, Pixar came along and made things easier and faster to animate. The story was fun, just a little too brisk. The idea that a 8,000…

I have been itching to rewatch this for some time now. Seems Austin already beat me to it. This movie is charming and awesome. Michael J. Fox does an outstanding job as Milo Thatch. I honestly don’t think anyone else could have done it as well as he did. All the side characters are fun and endearing. I especially love Dr. Sweet’s smooth and quick dialogue, as well as Vinny’s dry monotone demeanor. Rourke is a great villain. They don’t…

despite having a kid action figure and watching clips and gifs of this all my life, I hadn’t watched the actual movie yet and let me just say I finally get those 5 ppl on tumblr who called this a top 3 disney movie now! killed 80% of the crew in the first 30 mins. modern disney could never!

Another classic Disney film I hadn’t watched before. Different than usual Disney films, more violent and in turn deeper storytelling. Very fast-paced and stays that way to the end, loved it all. Family TV

I wanted to like this more than I do because the first half is VERY strong. The expedition is thrilling, the characters are unique and fantastic. And the moment where the kooky crew reveals their true colors is chilling. Cold expressions and guns… We spent so much time with the It loses steam after that, but I still hold this as one of the buyger Disney films.

!!!! SO much style and personality, so funny (the frustrated I.T. car bit, everything Vinny says: “just you know, office supplies.” “August, I think I’ll take August off”) but I wish it had been longer! When Lyle is villain monologuing (“you’re a bigger pain in my neck than I ever thought possible!”) it didn’t feel earned because we don’t know Milo or their relationship that well. I would’ve loved more development in the second half generally and maybe a darker…

i loved it as a child… rewatching it with adult eyes im like oooooh this is some colon/white savior shit……. which is sometimes made obvious but overall not. i don’t understand why all women had to be so sexualised but it worked on me, both carmen and kida were childhood crushes oopsie!! the sound of the blue crystal magic cracking up the volcanic stone at the end is sooooo delicious crounch crounch

Yo I didn’t know we were doing omega/alpha on main. Milo is easily THE omega, bro literally has Roblox bacon hair. Meanwhile, Kida is mogging the fuck out of Milo and exuding her alpha dominance 24/7, big fan. Side Note: Shout out to my lesbian queen Audrey and caring king Sweet.

So underrated as a Disney film and really shaped my career trajectory for art history. I wonder if my mom knew she was radicalizing me when she showed me this movie when I was a child. Sure it’s a little white savior complex but it’s also surprisingly radical for a Disney film and it really introduced a younger me to the pitfalls of art history and archeology. Now twenty years later I’m writing about how the British Museum needs to be decolonized as a part of my masters degree. I love this movie.

What a fun and exceptionally well made movie. All the characters have so much distinct personality. The love story between Kida and Milo is natural and feels like cute real chemistry. Surprisingly violent for a Disney movie… people get vaporized, shot, and burned. But all of it fits the story and does well to add tension. There is a lot of “lore” that’s not explained and confusing but honestly makes there feel like there is more depth. Lots of quotable lines lol

At only 90 minutes the run time feels extremely short for such a big movie. The scope and aesthetic feels hampered by the speedy pacing of the film. Many scenes, especially the dialogue heavy scenes feel like they needed just an extra minute to breathe or the big set pieces needed just an extra moment to really land and feel the impact. The integration of 3d and hand drawn are a lost art in my opinion, a burgeoning craft that…

I have never seen a Disney movie like this before. So original and the plot was just complex enough that it kept me interested but never felt confused. Also, the animation looked so good. 2D animation from 20+ years ago still looks better than state of the art CGI today.

This movie could’ve benefited from a longer runtime, truly help flesh out both the world building and character development. Aside from that, this is genuinely a fascinating piece of work that’s both whimsical and brutal. So many people die .-. Also we Cannot forget the greatest most hottest character Disney has ever created, Helga Sinclair.

this was a movie i always wanted to watch as a kid (i saw it advertised a lot on dvds i owned) but never actually got to see. so i was SUPER excited going in. and i’m happy to announce, i LOVEDDDD it! i’m 100% sure if i did get to see this as a kid i wouldn’t have stopped talking about it for years to come. – i also think it’s really funny that milo is basically daniel jackson…

I’m very fond of the comic book style animation. It feels like a grand adventure with diverse intersting characters. The problem is that it doesn’t dwelve into any of the charcters or the Atlantis setting. It makes the movie feel shallow and like the hero doesn’t grow throughout the movie. It had potential to be one the best disney films, but end up being half baked
-
S
I think my fav part of this is the setting. The animation of the set design is just peak. I think the cgi is still pretty awesome.
