This movie grabs my heart and doesn’t let go. I cried at the end. I’m a grown man and I cried at the end of Armageddon. No one can take that from me.

The only time Bay’s ever unabashedly leaned into sentiment and it’s worked for me, mostly because the excessive blue-collar romanticism meets dumb guy disaster epic writing (he’s got space dementia!!) is actually well-served by how absurdly over-cranked his direction is. The huge camera moves, complex lighting setups, gorgeous merging of analog/digital FX, and impressive sense of intensity and scale generated out of such a stupidly conceived melodrama and situations: “What are you doing with a gun in space?” I’m not sure I could mount the argument in good faith that its visual focus on large-scale organizing and destruction vs. intimate assertions of human personality/ingenuity/value is anywhere near the levels of physical-as-internal expressiveness as say, a John Woo for example, but…

this movie is a masterpiece because it simultaneously manages to be for people with minuscule attention spans and also 151 minutes long

This film gave me space dementia. Also, there are a lot of Aerosmith songs in this thing. Like, a lot.

“He’s got space dementia!” Armageddon is easily one of the stupidest films I’ve ever seen in my entire life and I thoroughly enjoy it. All the actors embrace the silliness of Bayhem without winking at the audience and the pacing of the action & the visual intensity is just an overall assault. Also, I feel the need to remind people that this movie is a part of Criterion collection with probably one of the best commentary tracks of all time. Ben Affleck – “Why didn’t they just train the astronauts to drill” Michael Bay – “Shut the fuck up Ben!!”

I shit you not, there’s a scene, underscored by strings, where Ben Affleck and Liv Tyler are lying supine with her shirt undone, and Affleck takes a couple of animal crackers and starts doing a David Attenborough narration as he walks the animal crackers “up north” to her bra and then “down south” to her panties then Affleck says, “I wonder if there’s anyone else on this planet doing this exact thing at this exact time” she says, “I hope so.” then “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” starts playing

Wow, an entirely unpleasant experience. Very ugly, bad camp, not even a little cute. The 90s can be exhausting.

I’m crying rn, my dad wanted me to see this together because he said it reminded him of us, i just 😢 can’t He needs to stop recommending me movies in which I will end up depressed

Really liked this film, I wished some of the characters were fleshed out a bit more but it’s a great space movie. My biggest complaint is that Ben Affleck character gets his girlfriend the most pathetic engagement ring in movie history. Like you work on an oil rig and earn bank and you’re telling me that’s the best you could afford. Like brother

Oh people I follow on Letterboxd HATE this! Well, couldn’t be me!!! I haven’t watched this in probably twenty years, but I was pulled right back into a movie I remember absolutely loving (and sobbing at) in theaters. Had a blast 🚀 and yeah, I cried twice during it tonight. Big dumb action, characters I don’t find annoying, and was very surprised how much the humor worked for me. Marvel wishes!! It seems our collective humanity is disappearing, so I get a bit teary eyed watching something that celebrates and idealizes the best of us.

This has got to be the silliest end of the world movie I have ever seen. Ben Affleck does a interesting Australian accent while playing with a animal crackers on Liv Tyler stomach what a wild movie. Steve Buscemi is supposed to be a genius and gets space dementia?

I have probably watched this movie 100 times from 8 years old to now. It’s not good. It’s bad. It has everything you want.

we could have a couple of these every year! christ alive it is so so beautiful, all that high contrast high saturation bold color lighting. michael bay’s absolute masterpiece. everything is exploding all the time! everything is explained twice in quick succession?? two aerosmith songs!! pure theater! we could have it so good! where did we go wrong?!????

I miss the days of the big budget disaster film featuring every character actor ever. Starts strong and ends strong (once they get to space the whole thing meanders in its haze of Michael Bay asteroid steam shots) and features a great Bruce Willis/Billy Bob Thornton dynamic. Really love the sequence of the oil drillers-turned-astronauts enjoying their probable final 24 hours on Earth (Will Patton turning up to his ex wife’s house to try and make amends with his son juxtaposed with Steve Buscemi covered in women at a strip club). Good dumb fun.

I’m going to knock this down a half-star from what I previously had it. But I still won’t tolerate any slander towards the 2nd must-see asteroid hurtling towards earth movie of 1998. Michael Bay’s follow-up to the greatest action film of the 1990s (yes, I’m serious), The Rock. I’m talking about Criterion Collection member, spine number #40, and 1-star recipient from Roger Ebert, Armageddon. Which, by Criterion standards, puts this in the same breath as Seven Samurai, Au Hasard Balthazar,…

Don’t wanna close my eyes I don’t wanna to fall asleep ‘Cause I’d miss you baby And I don’t wanna miss a thing eu assisti só por causa da música que eu amava desde criança, mas eu sempre enrolava pra ver.

Somehow way dumber than I expected, but that’s Michael Bay for you. There’s so much stupid humor in this it’s hard to take the threat seriously until the second half in space. The first half is dumb fun with a great 90s cast, but it leaves the movie feeling split and too long. It also begs the question: why not just train astronauts to drill instead of drillers to be astronauts? A: Don’t question it and shove popcorn in your mouth.

Rewatch: Big explosions in space! And Aerosmith.

I straight up love this stupid movie. saw it in the theater when it came out with my mom and grandma. core memory of seeing a huge summer blockbuster. I remember the aerosmith song being everywhere. but rewatching it is so fun. It’s shot so well. the colors are amazing. theirs a dude selling godzilla toys on the corner in the beginning. I love movies.

My Affleck super fan sister rented out a theater to screen this for her birthday party. So fun to watch this dumb and fun lunacy with a crowd of homies with pizza and cake. A few hadn’t seen before and were totally unprepared. They had so many questions, all we could do was direct them to the Affleck DVD commentary.

This was a fun movie. Some whack CGI, foreseeable ending, but I laughed a lot during this film. Got a little emotional at the end as well. Favorite line, “He’s got space dementia”

The spirit of 1990s conservatism is alive and well and living in the introduction to our main characters in Armageddon as they hit golf balls at Greenpeace protestors from their offshore oil rig. Incredibly bizarre scene, watching the future saviors of our planet, marked as decidedly blue collar within the bureaucracy they have to navigate to get the big world saving job done, blissfully serve corporate interests while trying to humiliate peaceful demonstrators. And despite all this, the film is…

I don’t wanna close my eyeeeeess.

The last triumphant fantasy of American conservatism. The world faces a crisis, and that crisis will be solved by roughnecks straight from the oilfields. Their main collective demand is to never again pay taxes. It sounds antigovernment, but it’s really a synthesis of labor and the administrative state, stocked with nerds and bureaucrats. In the last 30 minutes, they start talking about god, but there is no god in this universe. Since then, faced with the realities of climate change and the collapse of apologies for capital, American conservatism has been a zombie ideology, or maybe just the host for an even worse parasitic organism.

- When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper, who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J. who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter, until the mission proves otherwise.
