Not sure if this was scripted or if they just left Mads Mikkelsen alone in the arctic and told him to act naturally.

Just watching Mads Mikkelsen’s struggles here made me feel cold. And that’s not how I usually feel about Mads Mikkelsen.

Luckily there’s almost no dialogue in this so you don’t have to hear people constantly mispronouncing it as “artic.”

Brutal. Arctic’s greatest strength is its realism: the survivors aren’t superpowered beings who can overcome anything or sleep in the corpse of a bison, but rather normal people, and it sucks us into the ice-cold world the film presents us with. There’s no tragic backstory, no lengthy exposition, just two people desperately trying to survive. Leading actor Mads Mikkelsen has never been this good before; it’s easily the best performance of his career, all in his eyes and the way he drags his unconscious costar along in a sled. It’s also shot beautifully, letting the beauty of the harsh Arctic come across as alien and barren. What we have here is a solid survival film with some great acting, and it’s a highlight of the calendar year so far.

It doesn’t take long for Joe Penna’s “Arctic” to establish itself as one of the best movies ever made about a man stranded in the wilderness. In fact, there’s a small but crystalline moment in the first act (some 15 or 20 minutes in, maybe) when this hellishly cold portrait of human endurance claws ahead of the pack and never looks back. The context is easy to describe — the conflict frozen across Mads Mikkelsen’s face is not. The Danish star, throwing himself into an Iceland shoot that could probably make for a compelling survival story unto itself, plays a downed pilot named Overgård. The nearly wordless film starts at some point after his plane has crashed into a deep…

Such an amazing film, the cinematography and the sound was incredible. This film will make you feel everything the characters feel, the visuals and sound makes the film immersive. Sometimes you’ll even think that you’re stuck with him. Can’t forget about Mads’s acting, man just acted the hell out of it. Love this film.

Joe Penna strikes again. Mads Mikkelsen deserved better. One day after Stowaway I sat down for Arctic with the lowest possible expectations. Somehow they were not low enough. Let me be clear about what this film is: a nameless man we know nothing about, in a situation that is never explained, doing things we don’t understand, in a direction nobody mentions, for reasons that remain a complete mystery from beginning to end. Who is this man? How did he get…

The simple title kinda says it all with this one, because it is a seriously bare-bones story, even for a film in the typically stripped-down survival genre. Mikkelsen’s performance isn’t just the backbone of the movie, it’s the entire skeleton and most of the meat on its bones, something that’s less of a problem than it could be because he is indeed giving a great performance here; so much of the story plays out across his face, with all his…

What a fantastic movie, no dialogue, just a man crash landed making the most of it, till a copter shows up, crashes, leaving the man and his companion to try making it to safety, never giving up even though the situation got harder, thankfully getting saved in the end WOOHOO

The isolation aspect of this film makes it feel so daunting. Mads Mikkelsen is great. What’s the deal with 2018 films making bear jump-scares a thing? The Polar Bear made me jump so badly.

The Snow Society, but make it more Danish, lonelier, and less sunny. Mads Mikkelsen in a Last-Man-Standing-Type of plot, why not? He carries the movie all on his own…well, due to the plot he kind of has to, but yeah he delivered! The despair in his eyes, coupled with that courageous determination not to give up—that’s what makes this character so tangible. Paired with beautiful landscape shots that perfectly convey the sheer size and accompanying power of the mountains. Since…

So you’re saying that making a huge SOS sign in the snow, waving around flare guns, lighting your coat on fire for help doesn’t do shit, but in the end you get saved by lying in the snow, half dead and someone comes. Wtf? Other than that, this was a good movie. Not the best, not bad either. Mikkelsen’s acting in the end really gave me goosebumps. 6.2/10

I love survival movies. I love well shot movies. I love Mads Mikkelsen. This film had all of those things combined. I was impressed with how it gave indications of what happened to the characters, but did not spell it all out explicitly for the audience. If you like any of the above mentioned things, then I say definitely watch this movie.

i’ll admit right now that this isn’t a film i’d typically gravitate towards and i genuinely only watched it for mads. that said, i was pleasantly surprised. i found this, ironically, so warm. there was something about overgård that really gripped me. despite the brutal setting, i found him oddly relaxing to watch as he navigated his way through the arctic, keeping his routine with resilience and determination. this film proves that dialogue isn’t necessary to make a great film.…

So happy that despite my relationship with art (overconsumed, underconsumed, hated, taught, overthought, underappreciated, loved) I’m still able to get a lil lost and emotional. Indomitable human spirit might be my favorite genre I would’ve whack-a-moled the daylights out of that bear in the cave but that’s just me (stronger, wiser)

This sort of one man survival drama lives or dies by its lead, so Mads Mikkelsen having such an interesting face is a big point in this one’s favor. Wish we could’ve seen more polar bears, those things are fucking terrifying.

Sparse, minimal, beautiful, & intense. Describes both the story, environment, shots, score, and performance by Mads Mikkelsen. I’ve never seen a bad Mads performance tbh, so he still keeping it 💯

A survival movie that understands the power of silence. There’s very little dialogue and almost no unnecessary drama. It’s basically one man trying to survive in one of the most unforgiving environments imaginable. Mads Mikkelsen carries almost the entire movie, and he does it brilliantly. The cold, loneliness and desperation feel incredibly real. Simple story, strong survival atmosphere. Watchable one.

It’s Very Cold: The Movie. Highs + Beautifully shot old fashioned survival narrative that captures the hope, and perseverance, and benevolent side of the human spirit + Bold to jump in like a month after the initial plane crash + Polar bears ain’t nothin’ to mess around with + Methodical planning and techniques for living off the land

It was pretty good. I thought that the helicopter can’t rescue him so soon. Then it was just bad stuff happening all the time. I still can’t quite figure out why he was checking his watch. It did end well. I did think that the second helicopter was just going to fly behind that mountain and disappear as it gave no indication that it had seen them. Then just before the credits roll you see it swoop down behind them. If 15 seconds was cut from the end of the film it would have changed the ending completely.
