“It was going to be a long ride, and there was no reason to hurry.” Appaloosa is a respectable new-age western which is satisfied with just soaking in the atmosphere of the western world it creates. It’s not in a hurry to get anywhere or do anything particularly new, but it’s mostly successful at the modest goals it sets out to achieve. It’s essentially a traditional 40’s–50’s western (i.e. not revisionist) made in the modern day. The biggest highlight is the performances: Ed Harris (also directing, and quite capably) and Viggo Mortensen play a marshall-and-deputy duo that have been together forever, and their amiable rapport translates well to the screen (there’s this bit they do, where Harris can’t think of…

Captures the straightforward elegance of Robert B. Parker’s western noir prose, but it is deathly dull and Zellwegger sucks.

Solid and sturdy attempt by director Ed Harris, but I don’t think he had full control over the narrative or found what could’ve made the film more interesting as far as a western thematic experience. The pacing was slow and some of the action scenes weren’t executed well for me, but it is a classical and traditional attempt at a western and I admire it for that! Renée Zellweger what in the hell were you doing??????

Modern Westerns seem to get little attention these days unless they’re directed by a certain Mr Quentin Tarantino. Django Unchained’s success was a shot in the arm for the genre that had still delivered some impressive productions but rarely set the box office alight. Ed Harris takes a starring role here and also makes a welcome return to the director’s chair he’d filled so well on Pollock. Alongside Viggo Mortensen who yet again gives an effortlessly nuanced performance, this is an traditionalist Western with a simple plot that brings the best out of Harris, Mortensen, and the still incredible Jeremy Irons as the evil rancher intent on doing whatever he sees fit. Good versus bad in a battle for control…

I fell in love with Robert B Parker’s Cole and Hitch western novels this past summer. Read all four of them in about as much time as it would usually take me to read a single book. Like his best detective fiction, they’re character-driven, philosophically-minded stories that read like pulpy page turners. Appaloosa, Ed Harris’s film based on the first book in that series, is a sturdy and faithful adaptation. A well made, well acted, perfectly cast take on the story. But, not to be all “the book is so much better”, I just can’t help but feel that it loses something in the translation. Parker’s prose is unpretentious to the point that it could be mistaken for perfunctory. So…

It’s been 8 years since I last reviewed Ed Harris’ Appaloosa, an early noughties Western that benefited from a stellar cast, a fine script, and Harris donning various caps as co-screenwriter, director, and star, in a film that really should have been a much bigger financial success for New Line Cinema. With the price of making Westerns just one of the reasons why they are so scarce, even nowadays, the critical acclaim that HBO’s Deadwood had found between 2004-2006 had reinvigorated a stagnant genre and given filmmakers that much needed bit of confidence to take a chance. They threw $20 million dollars at this film, and in my humble opinion it was money well spent. Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen…

55 2008 was the year of The Dark Knight and Iron Man. It was also the year of Appaloosa. Listen up as we discuss this Ed Harris directed/co-written/star vehicle, with supporting turns by Viggo Mortensen and Renée Zellweger. 🐎 🤠 👢

Way way to crisp and clean. Where is the grit? The dirt? The cast is obviously amazing and I always say Ed Harris is so underrated but this is not it

Starts with promise, but as it went on it became weird, dull, and disjointed. As if the pieces were just thrown together without care.

I’m Virgil and this is my boyfriend/soulmate Everest. I would die for him but he would give up his comfort for me. We shoot people but we do it lawfully ALLEGEDLY. Alice is my wife but also she may try to fuck you. Good evening 🤠

A fairly unimaginative Western by my count, but there are some really fun moments and story beats between Hitch (Mortensen) and Cole (Harris). Zellweger didn’t do much for me in this.

I came for the realistic gunfights, but there a quirkiness that Ed Harris’ examination of the West that builds this dark fable into something more. That’s a fantastic cast of non-Americans (which often paints a great expectation for the genre).

Stripped down character study set in the era of The Wild West Some movies like to do everything all at once, keeping many plates spinning, while others take one plate and fill that up. Appaloosa is one of the latter and all the better for it as director Ed Harris sticks to the spirit of Robert B. Parker’s books. In this series Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) are partners as peacekeepers for hire. If you’ve got…

¿Un cigarro? No fumo.

Nice acting performances and direction, but it lacks a script making it special. It just happens and stays okayish throughout. Viggo is the goat, as always

Not to lie, after a solid year and a half of watching hard boiled revisionist westerns, watching a film like this, with a super throwback, traditional feel actually felt quite refreshing. I mean, sure, it lacked a bit of depth and Jeremy Irons’ character could have been a whole lot better, but hell. I was entertained. And very much so.

Directed by Ed Harris, ‘Appaloosa’ is a classical throwback western built around a ‘protect the town’ plot where two tough lawmen attempt to solve a murder and impose order on an abusive cattle baron (Jeremy Irons). Beautifully shot and well-acted, the film opts for a little offbeat, laid-back tone punctuated by sudden bursts of comedy and violence. Rather than reaching great dramatic heights, it remains a quite enjoyable, comforting ride filled with morally complex characters, tough decisions, and a few…

This one takes its time but never felt like it was going on too long if that makes sense. For sure not an action paced movie but I enjoyed it. Didnt know Ed Harris directed it till the credits rolled

something feels off here. what is the tone of the movies supposed to be? the music does not help, that is for sure. and everyone is so one-dimensional… “he is the capitalist pig now”, “she sleeps around now” – ok, I guess. but why not develop something along the way like explain that the bad guy only wants the town to prosper or something, by his evil means. or that she had a history of trusting wrong men, and now…

Buena pelicula.
