Genevieve Bujold is ferocious as Anne Boleyn, the woman who forced a divorce of King Henry VIII (Richard Burton) and was executed for delivering the future Queen Elizabeth instead of a son, but it feels like there’s one beat missing in Anne of the Thousand Days. And that’s when she declares love for her matriarchal King. Anne is defiant from the get go, telling her actual lover that he should shed his British decency and take her before they’re married, because she’s no virgin and her story that she’s about to tell him starts with her being thrown down but she isn’t able to finish because they’re interrupted but the look on her face is toothed and lacking of blush.…

as a kid my friend group would play as henry viii’s wives and i would always be jane seymour — henry doesn’t get rid of her, she’s best choice, right? in hindsight i was sooo wrong. anne boleyn gives up on love and marries solely for the power and money…. miss anne of the thousands days we are kindred spirits. watch me project all my feelings on a women who’s been dead for 500 years

“I want to fill you with sons!” Is just a fantastic line. For a second I thought he meant “suns” which would be pretty trippy.

Anne of the Thousand Days is a pretty great historical drama which follows Henry VIII and his pursuit of Anne Boleyn and the latter political and personal fallout that it leads to. It’s just one of those great historical films in which the 60s seem to excel at, and that’s down to a wonderful Richard Burton performance as the barbaric and deeply insecure Henry and who plays the tragic figure with such precision; it’s just amazing stuff. The costumes and setting bring such detail to this period drama and create such a powerful backdrop for the political struggles throughout. The movie leans a bit into a more theatrical approach at times, but this makes the work even more grand and…

Historical drama as it should be done – accurate in the story it tells, with great acting, great dialogue, explaining why historical figures acted as they did, telling an interesting important story without blinding everyone with its use of pretty dresses. And of course the presence of Richard Burton didn’t hurt this film either!

Anne of the Thousand Days is a particularly well crafted picture which garnered 10 nominations at The Academy Awards, to which I must say, it was very deserving! Richard Burton provided this film with a fabulous performance of Henry VIII, he had a great screen presence and he nailed Henry’s wicked nature. Anthony Quayle was nominated for his supporting performance also. He only grew more compelling to watch the longer the film went on. His back and forth with Burton was VERY entertaining to watch! The real star here however was Geneviève Bujold! I’m so glad she at least won a Golden Globe for her work. She was phenomenal! Her understanding of Anne is the ONLY reason why this film…

The story of the tumultuous relationship between Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife and mother of Elizabeth I, which started as a torrid extramarital affair and ended with her beheading for failing to produce a male heir. Engrossing historical drama that was unfairly maligned because it was nominated at the Oscars for Best Picture, taking the place of edgier films that better represented the new era dawning over Hollywood. This unrelated problem notwithstanding, it’s a really good movie, one of the last of its kind by the old studio system. You don’t have to be a history buff like me to enjoy the faithful recreation of the era, the lavish sets and costumes, and the larger-than-life personalities interacting…

”My Elizabeth shall be queen, and my blood will have been well spent!” I’m in a bit of an Anne Boleyn phase right now and this is definitely one of my favorite portrayals of her.

I have finally filled in this late ‘60s Oscars blind spot, a wonderful film that kept me engaged all the way to its emotionally powerful conclusion. Tremendous production design and Oscar-winning costume design, and the nominated stars give two of the finest performances of 1969, especially Genevieve Bujold, who is dazzling near the end. A few stretches in the second act could be tighter, the film taking on a claustrophobic feel at times, but Anne of the Thousand Days is quite good and I was happy to watch it at last.

I’ve watched numerous onscreen interpretations of the Tudor period-with its tales of sex, murder and intrigue, no wonder it’s one of the most popular periods of English history to explore. Consequently, that means it becomes harder for films to have fresh or interesting takes on the historical record. Anne of the Thousand Days is hardly revolutionary in its retelling of Anne Boleyn’s ascension to (and fall from) the throne, but the action moves along steadily enough and the sets and costumes are pleasingly lavish. The main attraction here is Genevieve Bujold’s Oscar-nominated performance as Anne: sharp-tongued, intelligent, and fully determined to be her own woman. Watching her defy Henry openly and make her own political machinations, you think “Elizabeth is definitely her mother’s child.”

starts out strong with an anne who thinks for herself only to slide into a boring and conventional romance. surprisingly a lot of historical details were left in– her ‘little neck’ comment, that henry was out hunting when she died– but the majority of the changes were all left in to soften the blow of a tragedy the film spends the first half building up. wasting my time, maybe, but the film wastes its own time, which is worse.

I wasn’t expecting a lot from this but was pleasantly surprised. It’s way ahead of its time and love how they portray Anne. The lead actress is amazing throughout and I love the feminist aspects of the script. Looks glorious and well acted by everyone.

It’s funducational! Henry was an entitled egomaniac misogynist dick who would’ve fitted in well in today’s manosphere. Enabled by scheming Cromwell, he ploughs through queens like they were lollipops and he a spoilt child in a sweet shop. Burton and Bujold are phenomenal, he as the machiavelian monarch and she as the innocent, corrupted and lured into seductive power and then guilty of the crime of bearing only a “useless daughter”. Hard to believe such a period of history existed, but it does make for a cracking tale.

we used the incest excuse last time!!!!! best not to make a habit of it!!!!! more imaginative and less accurate than i’d expected, but geneviéve bujold excels in this role. i’m so so fond of anne with a french accent ♡

Best portrayal of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII I’ve ever seen. I also love how much production cared to be historically accurate from the clothes to the storyline, LOVE. Richard Burton ate this down. Aside from Johnathan Rhys Meyers in the Tudors, best portrayal of Henry. I love how Genevieve Bujold who played Anne prophesied how great a Queen Elizabeth would be without even knowing herself and the fact that the film ends with Henry saying “to mistress Seymour’s” CRAZY.

It is so close to being everything I want in a historical drama. But it works great as a historical fiction if I end it early so Anne can be with Percy and nothing bad ever happens.

amazing, so rare to see Anne portrayed in this way. it really does make you remember that we truly don’t know what she was like. was she actually a kind woman who was pushed into marrying henry? or a woman after power? haunting questions

Decent historical drama which has an incredible performance from Geneviève Bujold as Anne Boylen. The rest of the film is very plodding and stuffy moving from scene to scene often with large jumps in time. The film doesn’t have enough tension in it to keep the engagement going.

The first hour felt completely unnecessary. At least it ended strongly, and the costumes were nice to look at throughout.

If this was about fictional characters I would have eaten it UPPP. Costumes, music, prestige stage acting, attention to detail, fab fab fab. But it’s about real people, and I hate Henry VIII, and your cinematic attempts to humanize him will not work on me.

WOW. Genevieve Bujold as Anne is incredible and super effing captivating. I can’t say she unseats my girl Natalie Dormer but pretty freaking close. Throughly enjoyed this rendition.

I adore this movie, I adore the acting as much as historical accuracy does not truly represent. The line ‘ my blood will be well spent’ is injected into my own writing. Goated

One of the most historically accurate movie I’ve ever watched (ignoring the fact that there is little to no history behind Anne, I just personally loved this depiction of Anne)

Such an epic historical drama with fantastic performances all around. I love the costumes, the cinematography, the storyline & the pacing. Richard Burton & Genevieve Bujold are brilliant as Henry VIII & Anne Boleyn & their partnership is brilliant. I remember watching this film at school during history lessons & I forgot how good this film is. They really don’t make films like this anymore

I was just waiting out the runtime. Didn’t enjoy it, didn’t enjoy it. If I didn’t know the history, it might have been more exciting. It felt like school.

I N C R E D I B L E FILM! I found it quite slow in the beginning but picks up quite quickly. Shocking that this did not win more accolades, Geneviève Bujold‘s performance is one of the best. I am in awe of her work in this and I would say she left a stronger mark on the film than Richard Burton. However, he wasn’t so bad himself. Great cast and even greater costumes. Henry VIII has got to be one of the top 5 all time worst monarchs in history.

The film is possibly the best Anne Boleyn film. Although textit{A Man for All Seasons} came out a few years ago, that film was mainly propped up by more elaborate costumes and sets (and the boating scenes were nice). The script of textit{Anne} is wittier and does an excellent job with King Henry, it also helps that it is a role Richard Burton was born to play. Burton gives Henry required charm, wit, horniness, and rage. Genevi’eve Bujold is good…

I have been remiss in my Richard Burton Watch this year, so am pleased to have now seen this really rather fine drama about the short reign of Anne Boleyn. Burton is excellent as the monstrous Henry VIII, obsessed with his desire for a male heir which Anne singularly fails to provide. Burton looks very comfortable in this role, although apparently he was dismissive of the film in his diaries. He is matched by Geneviève Bujold as Anne, all feisty…

I’ll be honest, I fell asleep three times trying to get through this. Any time it’s not about Anne I just could not care, even though it’s very well-acted!! I just found her perspective so much more interesting to consider, I didn’t want Henry’s at all; it would be more effective, to me, to view him as she did, to limit our view to that version of him. It would make the betrayal so much more affecting, devastating, and probably…

Of all the media ever produced about Anne and Henry, this is my Anne. Geneviève Bujold was just perfect.

Anne of the Thousand Days is a plodding 1969 historical drama that takes 145 agonizing minutes to explore a 16th-century relationship. It features Richard Burton acting like a hungover, angry toddler, Geneviève Bujold dragging out the most historically prolonged game of royal friendzoning, and costumes so outrageously over-the-top they might as well be from a high-school theater production. I thought Anne of the Thousand Days was going to be a thrilling, passionate saga of Tudor romance and betrayal. Instead, I…
