The dream ballet is absolutely beautiful, but I guess it has to be 17 minutes so you forget what a goddamn aggressive creeper Kelly is for the first 90 minutes.

Why bother with the plot when you could have just made beautiful dance sequences for two hours? I mean this as a positive review.

I don’t know what’s sadder: films not being as beautiful as this one, or films not having Gene Kelly anymore.

Le claquement du revers de la chaussure de Gene Kelly sur le parquet remplit de pointeurs colorés dans la ville qui « ne laisse rien oublié », Minelli laisse une trace, presque onirique, mais sur des jets scenaristiques qui font légèrement chier…

This was the first time that I’ve watched this in 4k which is the game changer for sure. All those colors and life. This is pure art and NOBODY is going to change my mind. The dances, the delicacy of them, the moves, the tenderness. The romance is pure and delightful, they dance as swans do when they’re in love. This is a must watch, no discussion. I liked it better the second time. Seeing it again makes you pay…

Tough beginning but it got there

Truly beautiful shots, choreography, and timeless songs. My favorite character? The concert pianist that’s never given a concert but keeps getting scholarships. Biblically accurate Paris apartment featured at the beginning. And most importantly: Gene Kelly’s ass.

Gotta love gene kelly.

Who couldn’t love Gene Kelly? Only person who could make my mum enjoy a musical (even though his character kind of sucks in this). Apparently my Granddad sat next to Leslie Caron on a plane once in the 70s!! How cool. The technicolour just looks magnificent, what a loss to that we’ve stopped shooting films this way

The rest of it is fine, but that final dance sequence is phenomenal.

well i can see why michael really liked it lol. this was quiet a fun and lovely musical. the song and dance was great, the colours lovely, the characters and set designs too. it got a bit confusing close to the end during the whole dance number, i guess im not french enough to fully get it ig. but either way it was a nice watch. also, what’s up with the 50´s and doing love triangels?

Maybe something got lost in translation for Gene Kelly (I know they didn’t have DuoLingo at the time), but he really acts like “No” means “OUI,” harassing poor Leslie Caron at her workplace. What a pest. This colorful Gershwin jukebox musical has some very rusty sexual politics, and the plot lacks a certain je-ne-sais-quoi… but the final ballet is magnifique.

The plot in itself is a bit too creepy and pedophilloic for me to get on board, but then again it’s literally from the 50’s so what can i expect. The score, choreography and cinematography really did save it though, so i’ll give it credit for that.

Vincent Minnelli’s masterpiece. Enough said. My favorite part about this film is the color! This is a film that does lack in imagination and taking a chance big choreography numbers. It tells a story through dance, which is perhaps the films most beautiful aspect.

i was so excited for this to be over so i could watch The Walking Dead as a 19 year old i hated this soooo sososososososo much jerry was literally disgusting for even being interested in lise, a well-adjusted 40 year old has no problem not looking at, or ever considering in that way, a 19 year old, let alone becoming “obsessed” with one 2 seconds into seeing her. For how much of a classic this is and for how much I love it, An American in Paris is surprisingly inconsistent. I feel like it’s trying to say things about the nature of being an artist and the sacrifices you make but it never really commits to the theme, especially with it’s completely unearned happy ending. Maybe that ending could have worked if the romance was anything other than creepy and under-baked. But, God, the dancing! The costumes! The…

After a day of being rather productive and an evening of more of the same, I realised that I still hadn’t watched a film, although it was the perfect opportunity to get something from my heap of physical media watched. Instead of going for the shortest of what I have left from my Gene Kelly collection, I decided that going for the middle one would be a clever idea and to save the other one for an “In Case of…

made me want to learn to tap dance but the romance that the plot centered around was pretty uncompelling and any attempt to tie up the loose ends of the plot (what happened to Milo?) were thrown out for a 20-minute dance scene (not for me) it was fun at times though

As a huge fan of La La Land, I should have watched this film years ago for its overt influence is astounding. It is one of the most splendid pictures ever brought to the screen; heartwarming, comedic, depressing, and unbelievably beautiful all throughout its runtime. It adds an interesting angle to the otherwise ordinary love triangle plot and one cannot help but fall for the romance between Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. Through and through, it will stand as the archetypal musical romance

film making was really so different back then in such a good way but i will say i love music but i think this one missed the mark dialogue was sometimes choppy and sometimes musical numbers were just there and didn’t really add anything to the story

I liked this movie a lot and I especially loved the songs; gershwin is such a good composer, cinematography, set and costume design, the choreography like hello gene kellys tap dancing is so fucking good and the entire sequence at the end?? like its literally so cool but you also cant deny that gene kellys character was just creepy as hell in the beginning 😭 I found lise pretty boring as a character as well I liked milo a lot…

gene kelley can sing, dance, and swoon after a woman all he wants. i’ll watch it every time. i am a SUCKER for a technicolor dance sequence. 17 minutes of pure bliss and drooling ryan and i had a conversation about how he isn’t the biggest fan of golden age movies, so now im embarking on a quest to watch a bunch of golden age and figure out how i feel. so for we are 2 for 2

An American in Paris (1951) is a dazzling Golden Age musical that transforms a simple romantic triangle into a vibrant visual masterpiece. Directed by Vincente Minnelli, it stars Gene Kelly as an American painter in Paris caught between a wealthy benefactor and a charming French woman (Leslie Caron). Driven by George Gershwin’s iconic soundtrack, the film’s legendary 17-minute climax—a breathtaking, dialogue-free ballet set against impressionist painted backdrops—earned it six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It remains an essential, joyous celebration of dance, music, and cinematic artistry.

Gene Kelly is amazing 🤩. The movie is a bit dated… because, sometimes a bit sexist… it didn’t grow with the time, but a classic and Gershwin is a King. And mostly actors are singing and dancing so well!!!💕💕💕💕

Absolutely enchanting on all fronts. The movie was pouring enthusiasm out of it’s pores. I can’t remember other than White Christmas that makes me feel the pure bliss and joy that this movie is. An American in Paris Gene Kelly is a muppet, Leslie Caron is a chipmunk. None of it reaching me lately, maybe I’m dead inside. Those peak moments when Minnelli throws his whole entire paintbox at the screen though. Those are sorta special. 3/5.

the costume design in this was so stunning. like I want every single one of lise’s outfits. especially the blue and orange one during the 17 mins dance number. and MAN what a dance number. you know I love a dialogue-less dance number in the middle of a movie that still moves along the plot. HOWEVER, the plot was lacking for me, despite gene kelly’s ever charming smile

One of the best looking films ever made – though that could be said for all old school musicals shot in Technicolor. As with Singin in the Rain, Gene Kelly is fun to watch on screen, very entertaining and a good leading man for these films. Leslie Caron is also brilliant, perfect for her role. If it was slightly faster-paced or a little shorter I may have enjoyed this much more though i did find this a brilliant film.

I really liked it, even though her cheating on her fiancé with Gene Kelly made me a bit uncomfortable—and look, I judge myself hard for my own bad moral choices, so I feel fully justified judging characters too! (Though I get it, it’s Gene Kelly). Aside from that, the aesthetics are amazing, Gene Kelly is great, and the lead actress is so stunning. It’s a classic: you watch it, smile, and it transmits that gorgeous, old-school Paris magic.

I saw this because someone had it in their top four on Letterboxd interviews on instagram, (and because I love Gene Kelly), but I gotta say I didn’t get it. I barely even liked it? Not sure if it was my mood, or the fact that “the girl” really had to be convinced before she went out with him, and his fascination with her was so purely based on her supposed beauty.

An American in Paris, directed by Vincente Minnelli and fueled by the timeless melodies of George and Ira Gershwin, completely changed how I look at dance on screen. I found myself swept away not just by the technical skill of Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron, but by how their movements carried the weight of romance, heartbreak, and artistic ambition. From the very beginning, the music acts as the heartbeat of the film. When Gene Kelly’s character, Jerry Mulligan, bounds through…
