The Indian totally stole the show especially Two Moon, such a lovely character. What a great prequel of Under The Banner of Heaven btw. Now I know what happened at Mountain Meadow.

I am sure a lot of shows and Berg films have been shot in this very specific way with the use of Dutch angles, cinematography and overall camerawork—but considering this was created by the same guy who wrote The Revenant, it’s impossible to deny that somewhere during the making of this miniseries, someone -perhaps him- when working on the style, pointed at the screen and said, “I want that.” Like you told me this existed in the same universe, I would believe you 100%. Now, that’s not to say it was a bad thing. I really dig that style and it definitely adds a certain identity of its own when it comes to shows; it makes it both stand out…

For context, my favourite film ever is “The Revenant” so because of its obvious comparisons, maybe I’m a little biased…but I absolutely loved this!! Gory, gritty, I loved the characters, the setting, the production.. I just adored everything! Except that it was only 6 episodes long maybe. I may end up giving this a 5 P.S: I hope they start putting Taylor Kitsch in things again, because he’s so good and so underappreciated! My Last Review: | Anthropoid |

This was GREAT!!! It’s a fictionalized imagining of settlers’ lives in the Old West, with a backdrop of real life events (the Utah War of 1850, including the Mountain Meadows Massacre + the role Brigham Young had in all of it). Loved the sets, costumes, special effects, gore, & suspense! The main characters were well written, as were some of the supporting actors. My favorites were Sara (Betty Gilpin), Two Moons (Shawnee Pourier), Abish Pratt (Saura Lightfoot-Leon), Red Feather (Derek Hinkey), Jacob Pratt (Dane DeHaan), Jim Bridger (Shea Whigham), Isaac (Taylor Kitsch), Edmund Dellinger (Lucas Neff), & Brigham Young (Kim Coates). Yes I really did thoroughly enjoy ALL of them.🫶 Favorite episode was 3, followed closely by 1 & 2, & then 6. IMO…

What Kevin Costner’s Horizon should’ve been. The American west, 1857. Unrelentingly bleak, brutal, violent and depressing. A lawless, godless, frozen, apocalyptic hell on earth. Everyone and everything, caked in blood, dirt, grime and god knows what else. Absolutely no one is spared. Zero happy endings, misery all around. And I kinda loved it! Betty Gilpin is always amazing! Lucas Neff (yes, that Lucas Neff from Raising Hope?!) surprised and impressed me. Peter Berg shot the hell out of it. But if you’re a good true believing Mormon as I once was, be prepared, this is one of the most unflattering portrayals of the church I’ve ever seen and it’s not totally without merit, the mountain meadows massacre may be the darkest moment in the religions history.

this was brutal — emotionally, narratively, visually brutal. but it all felt earned. every character bleeds. every bond is fragile. and the way this found family clings to each other through all the violence and loss? it wrecked me. the pacing is slow but deliberate, and when the violence comes, it erupts. strangers slowly start choosing each other over survival instincts. it hits hard.

One of the best works by Peter Berg So many filmmakers as of late have tried to tell this story or something on par but this is one of the only ones that captures the truthful brutality and tragedy of that era.

I don’t think there’s any worse place to be a Karen than Utah in 1857. Where everything is trying to kill you. Wolves, bears, Shoshone Indians, bounty hunters, Paiute Indians, Mormons, Trappers, and probably the most terrifying, French people. Mormons are especially surprising seeing what they are now. Well dressed Lesbians. The long road from Mormon militias to those BYU interviews, where they ask the student would they rather take a sip of alcohol or kill a puppy. Guess what they choose.

I’m not much of a Shows person these days now that every show is an open ended story trying to see how many seasons they can wring out of every idea but this tidy little miniseries is fun enough, even if it ventures into needless gore and suffering in moments. Taylor Kitsch is basically playing Wild West Riggins and they even hit a bunch of familiar Friday Night Lights beats and twangs throughout. I’d watch more!

Some of this is rather brilliant and much of the rest is disappointing. Fantastic world-building and shameless GOT-style brutality kept me watching, in addition to some great supporting performances (Brigham Young’s likeness is very convincing). Also the battle scenes are really well directed. The main characters i liked a lot less and it felt like they were constantly tripping over story clichés in an otherwise rugged and unforgiving setting that shouldn’t tolerate them. Kitsch and Gilpin overact to a point…

“Civilization and civilized are two different words entirely.” A pretty damn brutal western with no much in the way of concern for it’s characters well-being. Really enjoyed how the show opens with the Mountain Meadows massacre, it really gives you a good view of what you’re in for. As usual, always happy to see Shea Whigham kill it, a really good performance here. My two favorites by far we’re Abish played by Saura Lightfoot-Leon and Two Moons played by Shawnee…

What a crazy show. The storytelling, acting, personalities and characters, fight scenes, score, literally everything was 10/10. Legitimately felt like I was back in the Stone Age. Also Brigham Young was such a dickhead. The guy who defended his ranch and wouldn’t take the money was such a likable character. Can’t recommend this show enough

For me, a masterpiece. Raw, brutal, and honest depiction of western expansion equally paired with real humanity and complex emotion that fits any era. Top to bottom the cast is phenomenal, but the poignant and moving chemistry and story arc between Gilpin and Kitsch is moving and wonderful.

Konzeptionell genau mein Ding.

Betty Gilpin is predictably magnetic. Taylor Kitsch is predictably asleep. Shea Whigham and Kim Coates are having a great time chewing the scenery as fast talking frontier blowhards who seem to believe they are in an unrealized season 4 of Deadwood. The Mountain Meadows set piece is is a high point the rest of the series can never quite top.

this show is a truly brutal representation of violence in mid 19th century america. the creators present clear ideas on the self-destructive nature of revenge and violence itself. this is highlighted throughout especially in the mr and mrs pratt storyline, but also elsewhere. i really enjoyed the up close and personal cinematography throughout the show, it was used repeatedly to good effect to show characters thoughts, motivations, and also as a story telling mechanism. the violence was gory and brutal,…

Right there with Taylor Sheridan’s ‘1883’, Peter Berg’s ‘American Primeval’ stands as a towering achievement in the western genre, and one of the finest in the past decade. Taylor Kitsch and Betty Gilpin are at the top of their game, and the rest of the cast match their performances perfectly. Gory, gritty, brutal and unforgiving, it’s a masterpiece of cinematic long-form storytelling. Hats off to everyone involved.

A troubled mother and her crippled son acquire a guide to help them through the American West during a turbulent time when war is brewing between Mormons, Native Americans, and the United States military. I heard about this show in an episode of The Last Podcast on the Left, when they were talking about Joseph Smith and the insanely bloody history of Mormonism. For example, did you know that the Mormons dressed up like Native Americans and slaughtered any settlers…

American Primeval shines light on the early brutal history of the Mormon church and their role in the US onslaught against Native Americans. The series sets up the Mormons as a conniving cult seeking to strengthen their claims to the land by expelling other non-Mormon settlers. The settlers are sort of portrayed as innocent or at least unknowing bystandards, yet they to make disparaging remarks about the Native American groups, which does make them seem less sympathetic. The series clearly…

E
A very rough and violent Western depicting Hobbesian civil war between the federal government, Mormons, various Indian tribes and plain old bandits in antebellum Utah territory. There are multiple concurrent narrative threads in the series but they never become too confusing because all roads lead to brutality. The ending was a little sappy and overwrought, and it felt out of place amidst the sea of bloodshed depicted in the bulk of the series. But very good overall and worth your time.

Limited Series are great. This one was bleak, but dynamic, at times a little drawn out but never slow or boring. I’ll always think that stories like this are more satisfying when told as epic films or double features, but if this is the streaming-era alternative, it’s not so bad. Peter Berg and co. did a great job.

I really really wanted to love this, the first 4 episodes played out perfectly for me, and after realising there was only 2 episodes left i crashed out. I don’t understand having this overarching villain that’s making all these moves secretively but when everyone eventually finds out no one does anything about it. The plot line of Jai Courtney chasing the bounty is the most jarring annoying shit, slows it right down for me, the main characters should’ve had more…

i was chilling until the angsty, barely recognizable guitar cover of “this land is your land” started playing at the end. in elementary school, all we learned about in history for a solid 3-4 years was the wild west (wyoming core). this included a field trip to fort bridger, but i regret to say that all i can really remember was the general store selling rock candy and bottled root beer. however, one thing i do remember is the spark…

A raw, uncompromising look at what happens to the human psyche when it is stripped of societal safety nets and forced into pure survival mode. The mother and son’s journey serves as a powerful metaphor for leaving an abusive, restrictive past behind, only to find that the landscape of healing is incredibly harsh and violent. It provides a deep therapeutic exploration of “found families”—how traumatized individuals unite to build safety when the world offers none. However, it also delivers a sobering lesson on resilience: surviving a hostile environment often forces you to weaponize your own capacity for brutality, changing who you are forever.

Such an incredible show! Are they really trying to make the Mormon entirely responsible for the indigenous deaths?!

Nothing beats nature. Peter Berg dedicated to the 130 days of shooting in the real and wild locations and to only 2 days indoor filming. The views are satisfying, story and character’s complexity motives could have been richer. Script is good. I wanted to see Red Feather in action more. And it’s the survival instinct in the series that I like the most.

ts pmo. I love me some evil mormons doing evil mormon shit. Make a show about them. I don’t need a forced romance between characters that are too uninteresting to even dislike to go along with it. Main lady was written to be such a bumbling fool, but not intentionally. I’m sure some people are taken in by the spectacle and swayed by the sappy music and shit. Finally an honest perspective on the events of 19th century US, focused on the Utah War but gives a great understanding of where the country stood. First. Loved the Native representation. Real indigenous casting is a win for Native American cinema. But the crazy part about this whole series is how Brigham Young and the Saints are the bad guys. What’s even crazier is how all the things they are portrayed doing are all historically accurate. It’s all a matter of perspective and the filmmaker is in the perfect position to shape it for the audience. This series was really good at doing just that.

Was very hopeful for a Blood Meridian experience with this story’s pseudo-historical retelling of real life carnage. But god damn this show could use one ounce of colour and less dutch angles.
