Few people are able to make a career and fairly substantial money while sucking so terribly at their job. In film, there is Uwe Boll. He has directed an amazing 14 films with a 3.0 or below on IMDB (1.5 stars or below equivalent for Letterboxd) and has two in the Bottom 15 of all time. His films are amazingly bad. Coming in at #13 on the IMDB Bottom 25 Films of All Time is Alone in the Dark (2005). The plot of this movie is so jumbled and disorganized, that they felt they needed to add a 200 world crawl to the beginning of the film to explain things. And even that didn’t work. The storytelling is poor, the…

Listen I love House of the Dead, I really do. It’s completely awful and very entertaining for all the ways that only people like me love and it’s inexplicably rewatchable so I feel like I should love this mess just as much but…I don’t. I’ve tried and it just doesn’t work on that same terrible/delightful level. I’d write a brief synopsis about this but I don’t really know what to say. It opens with this super long scrolling intro that apparently had to be added after test audiences were left incredibly confused, and even after watching this at least 3 times, I still don’t really have any idea what it’s about. There are awful cgi monsters that you never get…

It’s my first Uwe Boll movie and I have almost nothing to say. Seriously, even on a basic descriptive level, I couldn’t tell you the plot of this film if you held a gun to my head. Alone in the Dark is bewildering, but also strangely generic. At times it is terribly boring in its unambitious meandering and under-explanation of key story points, while at other times it springs to life, wildly changing its aesthetic and going into overblown, action-packed, heavy metal music video mode. I was frequently unsure of what Boll was going for here. Suspense? Mystery? Sci-fi action? Horror? The more “horrifying” scenes lack any tension or terrified intrigue and the action beats are cliched. I know this…

Uwe Boll could probably roast me more than I could roast this film. this kind of falls into the category of shitty fun films where it is probably some of the most atrocious shit that you’ve ever seen, but damn is it fun to watch. There is some god awful acting and line delivery in this movie like holy shit Man 😭 it’s probably also just the script because the dialogue is criminally awful. I will give it props for that sick ice bullet scene it kinda made me hard ngl. also, extra note they should put a goddamn epilepsy warning on here Jesus Christ, 52 minutes in be warned. 1.5/10

This would have passed unnoticed had it premiered on the Syfy Channel, but instead it opened wide and launched Uwe Boll’s tenure as cinema’s village idiot. Looks like it was shot in the Bat Cave at the Science Centre. Certain scenes have a stilted, lost-in-translation quality that reminded me of Lucio Fulci, but it’s fair to say that Boll is not an equivalent talent. Great to see Jack Nicholson’s two sons from different marriages, Christian Slater and Stephen Dorff, tearing it up together. Not Tara Reid’s finest hour. I wish I saw this theatrically instead of trudging out to House of Sand and Fog or some shit like that.

NOT a stirring drama about someone masturbating for the first time. That title is totally misleading as it had to be either that or an adaptation of a brilliant video game. Unfortunately, it is neither.

Revisiting one of the classics of my pandemic-era Zoom movie club. Not entirely without a certain Shocking Dark (Mattei, 1989) energy. Nice moment in the DVD extras where Christian Slater grins and says, “We’re makin’ a horror movie? What could be better?” Good attitude.

How could I not want to see a film in which Tara Reid plays an archaeologist in frosted pink lip gloss? About fifteen minutes into the movie I was having such a hard time paying attention that I paused to look at Uwe Boll’s filmography and that’s when I realized that this would be my very first film of his. How is that possible? I thought I’d seen House of the Dead…

Alone In The Dark (2005) is the same old horrible junk from Uwe Boll. Christian Slater stars as Edward Carnby, a private investigator who specializes in unexplainable supernatural phenomena and he, along with archaeologist Aline Cedrac (played by Tara Reid) and a team of Bureau 713 agents uncover a plot to awaken a demonic race called the Abkani. I like Christian Slater as an actor, I think he’s such an underrated actor, I love Broken Arrow (1996), Kuffs (1992), Hard…

“You carry light.” “I have enough baggage for the both of us.” Oh boy. I’m conflicted because I obviously came into this fully knowing that Uwe Boll is known for his “game adaptations” (if you can even call them that). From the monsters (if you can even call them that) that resemble something you’d see out of a PlayStation 2 cutscene to even the insane opening monologue that overstays its welcome. It’s definitely a mess… but I somewhat had fun? I…

Compared to House of the Dead, this movie was incredibly boring. It felt like a ripoff of Aliens more than anything. Also, for a “scary movie,” it isn’t scary in the slightest. House of the Dead was at least funny bad. This is just dull as hell.

Looking for a movie that faithfully adapts the game series credited for launching survival horror? THIS IS NOT IT Looking for a time-killer that feels like made for the SYFY channel movie but was actually released in theaters and somehow propelled director Uwe Boll’s cinema career? BUCKLE UP I was scrolling looking for a film that had that “made for movie/SYFY channel” vibes and stumbled on this. Seeing the title card AND THAT Tara Reid, Christian Slater, and Stephen Dorff…

This is the type of film that could only have been made as some kind of money laundering scam. The story is: there are some monsters who came to Earth. I think we’re supposed to stop them. I admire the consistency of this production, they’ve managed to make every aspect absolutely rock-bottom terrible. Not even the mid-2000s C-lister powerhouse trio of Christian Slater, Stephen Dorff and Tara Reid can offer any kind of redemption. Even the poster looks like one of the monsters is laughing at you for even considering watching it.

Dogshit ass film that I own because it’s funny and a like it. It’s like setting a McDonalds cheeseburger in a glass jar on your counter and keeping it there just to see what happens. Also, there’s portions of this movie that are literally a really badly shot music video.

Note to self: rewatch this one day and see if you can possibly make out a single thing that actually happens in this movie. Easily one of the most confused films I’ve ever seen. Has Uwe Boll ever seen a movie? Has he ever spoken to another human being before? I’m genuinely not convinced he’s not some artificial life form sent to this planet with the express purpose of making the worst movies of all time. Really and truly incredibly terrible film.

I went into this knowing that generally people hated this film but I wanted to see if it was so bad it’s actually quite good. For the first 20 minutes it was! So I’ll just to cut to the chase and say this was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. I should’ve known what I was getting myself into with the 1% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but even then I didn’t expect it to be as awful as it was. Way too much action for me, characters lacked depth, and I wish the monsters were more abstract of an idea than being giant lizard scorpions with insect babies. I do appreciate the story and how it has a layer of insinuating government corruption and immorality within the system. I don’t recommend

A perfectly normal bad film. Uwe Boll was a victim of normie sadism. The best, and perhaps only good action scene is the first. The film is downhill after the first 25-30 minutes, clear tropes at least come together in what seems to be in a self-conscious manner that there is the opportunity for at the least a cool paranormal twist on the treasure-hunter mold. The city, museum and ship carrying an ancient artefact reminds me of ‘Vampire: The Masquerade…

Doesn’t even have the gratuitous quality that can give you some minimal enjoyment like in House of the Dead. Never had action been so mindless yet so limp. Bewildering, but not in a funny or interesting way, bewildering, boring, possible the least entertaining take on this idea, incompetent, like that opening cuts between three different times after an incredibly opening crawl. It’s crazy that you can have a seemingly competent camera, actors (mostly), etc. yes be so terrible, I think if you give most bad filmmakers these resources, they will give you something to be interested in. Boll is kind of inexplicable.

THE TRASH TUESDAY TRADITION Alone in the Dark is likely Uwe Boll’s best movie. Which isn’t saying much. At least Christian Slater delivered a competent performance. Or as competent of a performance as he could deliver given the material he was presented with. Tara Reid on the other hand, not so much. Her line delivery is almost robotic. Unlike In the Name of the King, I was mostly entertained. Which still doesn’t make this a good movie. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Unless they’re like me and always watch a movie with a 49% or less rating on Rotten Tomatoes every Tuesday.

Potential: “Alone in the Dark was released in 2005, directed by Uwe Boll, one of the best directors and based on a video game of the same name.

Watch on second monitor. This was another “lowest rated on watchlist” pull, the very lowest rated on a current watchlist of over 1400 films. Compared to my extremely low expectations going in, I liked it! I found it to be a decent and enjoyable B movie. Didn’t realize it was by Uwe Boll until after watching, and apparently it is also a videogame adaptation of a game that seems like a bit of a forerunner to Alan Wake mechanically, though…

I love looking at Christian Slater When Christian Slater is wearing a black tank top you almost don’t notice that the movie lost its own plot the longer it went on. “… cheese gives you nightmares.” Hitting us with the production cards after your tepid prologue is certainly a choice. I said in my review of House of the Dead that I was embarking on a mission to view the entirety of Uwe Boll’s filmography. What I didn’t mention was why I’m doing so. The answer is twofold. First, I want to know if there’s a reason this man keeps getting financing despite being a notoriously bad director. Second… masochism, maybe boredom? Dealers…

Alone in the Dark isn’t just a bad movie; it is an aggressively brain-dead exercise in cinematic incompetence. From a 90-second exposition dump at the start to Tara Reid’s wildly miscast performance, the film is a masterclass in stupidity, bad logic, and unintentional comedy. For a movie titled Alone in the Dark, no one is ever truly alone, and the film is often well-lit. Instead of an atmospheric, H.P. Lovecraft-style horror, it devolves into a brain-dead, sci-fi military shoot-em-up. In…
