The literary voice over narration gets a bit grating at times, otherwise this is pretty solid. Of the four adaptations of this book I’ve seen, this one may* have been the truest to the source material. It is definitely the most immersive. The movie pulls you into the group dynamic until you feel like you are one of the gang. It might not have the stark intensity of the the 1930s versions, but at least it didn’t completely miss the point, like the recent Netflix version did. * I read the book a very long time ago so take my comparison with a grain of salt

Did you know that there are actually 4 versions of All Quiet on the Western Front? There is 2022, 1979 and 2 in 1930. I was not aware of this until I went to celebrate 2022’s Remembrance Day (11/11) by watching all 3 films and found a silent version of the original also on the Bluray. So, I watched all four over the weekend and composed my thoughts… How do they compare? 1930(a). The “classic.” The plot follows the length of the entire war for the boys we follow, starting with the absolutely menacing Teacher (who really stands out as the villain of the piece). The acting is typical for the time, but the camera movements are ahead of it…

60 The film starting with narrated exposition for the characters really says it all. This plays more routinely like a book than a film should. This makes logical sense considering it’s based on the same 1929 novel that the 1930 and 2022 All Quiet on the Western Front films are based on. Yet, this is not a positive thing. Both of those other films thankfully avoid the tedious narration which allows us to connect more with the events as they unfold. Here, Delbert Mann (“Marty”) tells the story pretty plainly with little to really ever attach to. Richard Thomas is solid as Paul but doesn’t ever add more to the character than I would’ve liked. Some of the supporting cast…

“Seninle daha önce hiç karşılaşmamıştım böyle..yüzyüze. Az önce tüfeğini, süngünü, el bombalarını gördüm.Hepsini kenara atsaydık kardeş olabilirdik. Ama bunu bilmemizi istemiyorlar değil mi? Bilmemizi asla istemiyorlar.” Savaşlardan nefret ediyorum.

“If we threw away the guns, the grenades… we could have been brothers, but they never want us to know that.” You can see that this movie is building the foundation on which Full Metal Jacket was created. Not only does this have similar themes and stories from boot camp to war, but there are a few moments that I felt were directly inspired by this. While I haven’t read the novel this is based on, it is quite faithful to the original 1930 movie. This is slightly longer and expands a bit more on their journey, but it is relatively the same movie. I thought seeing this in color instead of black and white was going to take away…

War, what a terrible thing. Edwin Starr was asking the right questions when he pondered “what is it good for”. And he was even more right when he knew it was absolutely nothing.

Whoa… This one was amazing. Although it was a weak start of the film, the rest was very well filmed. Because they were so SHAPE. GRR SHAPE. The interpersonal relationships of the 2nd were much stronger, each character was more polished and I felt happy when they were, sad when they were… Paul felt much more real too, we could see he had hobbies, how he felt about things… He truly was human. Also, right at the end of the movie, when his comrades are dead (including Kat). It is much clearer that he had become the new Kat, touching the young boy’s shoulders.

This movie was a cinematic masterpiece it not only showed how the boys went from Young City Boys cracking jokes to having a hard time transitioning back to civilian life and it showed just the impact of War on them and I enjoyed how it primarily focused on the impact of War on the soldiers themselves turning these boys into men and how everyone told them that they should be men instead of being boys even though they were so…

I enjoyed the narration parts. The film overall felt like the TLoU part 1 remake, not the remaster yk.

Out of all ways he dies, He lets his guard down by looking at the sky for the bird. Great foreshadowing from the beginning of it. Never would have expected it. But all he had to do was wait a little longer until the armistice came. Graat movie but damn that ending pains me. War. Is. Hell.

justice was served after the abomination that was the 1930 version. just- beautifully captured. true to the timeline of the book, and the writing is taken from the english translation. also, any straying from the novel made me appreciate it so much more with how it was handled; it only added to such an iconic story.

How could I like this one less than the 2022 version is beyond me. The horse scene was done well though. I liked the voice over with the parts from the book and how they were able to do more effects and tricks wise than in the 1930s version. The inclusion of the rats was great. The acting was shite at times

Not quite as good as the original. Kazinsky has nowhere near the amount of screen time and charisma that the version from the original had despite being played by Marty from Marty (1955) I did enjoy the narration but most of the characters are just as bland if not blander then the original. I hate the change with the ending shot too.

A bleak, realistic-feeling portrayal of how I imagine war affects those who experience it. “War never changes.” – Ulysses S. Grant

- At the start of World War I, Paul Baumer is a young German patriot, eager to fight. Indoctrinated with propaganda at school, he and his friends eagerly sign up for the army soon after graduation. But when the horrors of war soon become too much to bear, and as his friends die or become gravely wounded, Paul questions the sanity of fighting over a few hundreds yards of war-torn countryside.
