Mini Collab with fellow time jumper, Slay. I really do feel for Peter Hyams when it comes to the absolute nightmare of a production he had on A Sound of Thunder, a massively slashed budget, heavy flooding destroying sets and being forced to shoot everything on a greenscreen, ultimately stifling his creativity. What seemed like a good idea on paper goes woefully undeveloped and poorly realised. The film doesn’t exactly rewrite genre history; a catastrophe of bad acting, ludicrous science and horrifically shoddy special effects that can’t even follow its own internal logic from one scene to the next. Hyams’ usual excellent direction feels massively paired down. Still, occasional flashes of his usual quality almost break through the ugly CG…

I can’t believe that they had the balls to release this turd in theatres, especially after the hellish production it went through. First, filming was delayed due to severe floods that caused considerable damage to the set, as well as the original production company going bankrupt during post and there was not nearly enough money to finish the movie, resulting it to be shelved for several years. In that case, you think that they’d just cut their losses and fucking abandon it or maybe just finish it and quietly release it straight-to-video but nope, theatrical run, let’s serve up the fucking slop to the public. Some of the worst CGI & VFX I have ever seen in a film. Total top-to-bottom fucking garbage. I do recommend that you watch this though, just once, to see how filmmaking can go terribly wrong. 🚆💺⏰🌄🦖🔫🥾🦋⏱️🌊🐒🦎

A travesty and in the running for the worst movie I’ve watched for WHM.

“Last wave changes the last species to evolve, homo sapiens.” Homo Sapiens have been on earth for about 250k years, give or take a few millennia. At no point has evolution stopped on earth since we arrived.

I don’t know why I keep doing this to myself. This is the third time I’ve watched A Sound of Thunder in the last decade. I guess I just keep expecting it to be better than it really is. I mean, how can a movie with dinosaurs, mutant gorillas, man-eating plants and time-travel be this lame…? I don’t get it.

Rewatched for WHM and dear lord… sometimes it’s best to NOT release such a troubled production. This whole thing is top-to-bottom embarrassing. It’s sub-SyFy channel shitty.

As a Peter Hyams evangelical I’d love to be able to reclaim this from its status as a notorious flop but the VFX here are just mind-bogglingly awful, an early experiment in doing pretty much all the action sequences of a film in arguably unfinished CGI, and it’s just impossible to see it as a true advancement over the old techniques (perhaps we fucked up and smashed a butterfly we weren’t supposed to somewhere back there?). Bradbury’s short story is one of those perfect objects that you can read once and then remember for the rest of your life, and a film version by Hyams is a good idea in theory, but this simply doesn’t work at all. Some cool creature designs though, I especially like the dino-baboons who kill David Oyelowo.

Action! – The Unlikely Rumble: Hill v Hyams As appears to be frequent with these directors of bygone eras who manage to make films into the new millennium, the quality tends to fade, and thus far the 2000’s have not been kind to our buddy Hyams, whose current work has seen his films being lambasted by critics, with his latest films sliding to the appalling 11 percent and below on Rotten Tomatoes. To be honest, this flick isn’t all that terrible. Indeed, the visual effects are largely awful, the cinematography has this cheapening quality that makes it appear nearly like something out of Syfy, and the plot is rather muddled. However, seeing it as a special (and bad) episode of,…

Surprisingly not the worst or most embarrassing thing Franchise Pictures produced. They produced Battlefield Earth. Gotta love how a movie about time travel and dinosaurs was more about mutated mandrills than anything else. The vfx had me crying. You can see the green screen behind them including the city scenes. $88 million. 88 million to have your dinosaur showpiece scene(shown multiple times) look like it was a cut scene from a 90s video game. Jurassic Park was 12 years earlier and made with $63 million. It made 1.9 million domestically at the box office and 11.6 worldwide. Director Peter Hyams second movie about time travel, 1994 Timecop staring Jean Claude van Damme. Hyams would go on to direct van Damme two more times, Sudden Death and Enemies Closer. Because on this account I make the atrociously bad time travel dinosaur movie all about Jean Claude van Damme.

Evil capitalist overlords accidentally creating the monkey-saurus is very up my alley! So is idiot science about time waves and evolution. Edward Burns remains a poor man’s Ben Affleck, which makes him preferable to real Ben. But perhaps nothing is finer than Sir Ben Kingsley’s beautiful (and sometimes tall) white hair (and matching soul patch). It feels like I watched this movie every Sunday afternoon on SyFy twenty years ago. It was probably more like 5x over a year. But…

Given the troubled production, you’d ideally want to approach this with some emotional generosity and not place too much emphasis on the abysmal VFX – placeholder renders of creatures that visibly hover above the ground they’re supposed to be walking on, backgrounds that look like SimCity 2000 opening cinematics, Windows Movie Maker earthquake and distortion effects, sub-Channel Awesome greenscreen work – but then the script makes matters even worse by dropping lines about homo sapiens being “the last species to evolve,” acting…

Legitimately horrible, but in an oddly charming sort-of clueless way. Like when you see an action figure at a Dollar Tree that’s called the Indelible Bulk or Echolocation-Themed Hero. As a wee lad, my first exposure to this was when my family went to go see The Work and the Glory, which is an LDS movie. It was huge coup to see such a niche movie in our local movie theater, so our entire congregation was there for the premiere.…

This is a tough one because the story is just so good – the book is great – but the movie is so poorly put together with what looks like a super low budget. I mean really, super bad effects and comically bad CGI and green screen scenes. But I LOVE Ray Bradbury stories – they are some of my favorite reads, and the movie does at least tell the story so gets this fairly favorable rating based on that.

Cool concept since it was based on a Ray Bradbury story that alone makes it worth watching but man does this movie look awful. Apparently the production company went bankrupt half way through making it and you can definitely tell. Green screen that’s YouTube shorts quality and ps2 graphics quality cgi.

There’s a lot wrong with this, and even though you can’t really help the studio basically going bust before they completed post-production, A Sound of Thunder is still awful. The budget problems means the effects look cheap and very nasty, but even looking past that, the rest of the movie is a bit of a mess beyond salvaging. At least a very Bob Barker looking Ben Kingsley seemed to be having fun.

I caught this on the scifi channel as a kid but didn’t get to see the end and it became completely lost to me after that. I remembered it as “that weird scifi channel dinosair time travel movie I could never find again and dammit no not Days of Thunder the one I want doesn’t have Tom Cruise” for the longest time. This beautiful disaster must be seen to believe. A time traveling tourism company screws up the timeline and our heroes must act fast to repair it while the world crumbles around them. There is a great story there. The actors deliver, especially Ben Kingsley as the sleazy owner of the company. It seems that a real disaster struck the set and forced them to film everything with green screens and that’s not even the worst part. The CGI backgrounds and…

Difficult to rate, it’s literally an unfinished movie. They basically released a workprint to theatres. No exaggeration, there are scenes that look like they were plucked straight of The Amazing Bulk. Renny Harlin, the original director—quit. Pierce Brosnan, the original star—quit. Franchise Pictures, its biggest piggy bank—litigated for fraud and bankrupted during post-production. Little money remained for VFX or virtually any post-production at all. Kind of a fun oddity to revisit with all that in mind, but the average person sitting in…

Cool concept, prehistoric execution. Based on Ray Bradbury’s 1952 short story of the same name, this 101-minute sci-fi thriller from director Peter Hyams was a massive box office disappointment following its September 2005 release. The 111-minute narrative follows scientist Edward Burns as the lead guide and researcher for a temporal tourism agency, who must save the world after a single mistake during a prehistoric safari has devastating and unforeseen consequences in present-day Chicago. Burnsy is definitely doing his best in…

Suspense Thriller based on the famous short story by master of fiction Ray Bradbury. In the year 2055, a technology has been invented that enables people to go back in time to hunt dinosaurs. When one such expedition to the Prehistoric past unwittingly makes a fatal mistake it dramatically impacts the course of evolution, setting off waves of destruction that ripple toward the modern world and unleashing an army of fearsome creatures that never should have existed. Two scientists race against time to fix the catastrophic error while their world collapses around them and every minute brings the human race closer to extinction.

I wish Hyams had gotten the full $80 million budget he was promised to finish the film he wanted, but alas, this is what we have. And it’s not half-bad either. Mostly the half-finished VFX is what drags this down but it doesn’t totally take out of what’s happening in the film. It’s just a little disappointing that Hyams signature lighting is almost non-existent except for maybe one or two scenes. Ben Kingsley has the stand out performance here, he…

80 million dollar shit fi channel movie. Production wise this is on par with Jack Frost 2 and somehow cost like ten million more (adjusted to inflation) than 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Perhaps I am blinded by nostalgia but I really do not see why this is so lowly rated? A 2.0 is super low for letterboxd; that’s sub Bigfoot Family by a wide margin. I get the CGI looks rough in some places but honestly for the time period and the fact the production company went under, on average they do not look too bad to me? Some scenes with the cars are for sure terrible but the creatures look pretty…

Happened accidental Time travelling day in movies. There are some really nice ideas. The world being so destroyed you can see lions only as holograms, or time travel dinosaur hunt being a rich people’s entertainment. And all these monster designs like monster baboons, water beasts, giant bats. But the movie feels so undeveloped with really cliche ways and overexplaining the thing going on… It was still a fun watch, but it’s one of those movies which deserve a remake that would make it all look better.

From our “Terrible Movies” series, this is (very loosely) based on a Ray Bradbury short story about time travel. Ed Burns, a good supporting actor in much better movies, seems to have been hired here as sort of a poor men’s Ben Affleck, and he makes Affleck look like a master of portraying emotions. He plays the leader of “safaris” of rich people who go back in time to hunt dinosaurs (who would have died seconds later anyway, so time…

This is a first draft. This film is still being developed and thus should not be viewed by an audience. That’s the only explanation for the editing that does not occur and the effects that are clearly placeholder for something much more spectacular and believable in this movie.
