A few years ago I was talking to a friend who had just seen David Gordon Green’s “All the Real Girls.” My friend isn’t much of a film buff, but he knew that he’d seen something special. When I asked what he liked most about it, he didn’t say anything about the acting or the direction or nuances of the plot. Instead, he simply said “because that stuff really happened.” Of course, my friend was not speaking literally. Instead, I think he was trying to talk about a feeling that the movie captured that transcends what we generally consider realism. It struck a nerve with him because it resonated in a deeper way than he could have ever expected. It…

brilliant because every decision feels like it’s made in the moment, not like it’s serving something three steps ahead. it’s often the best intentions that reveal how fragile everything is, and how quickly it can all unravel.

One of the greatest films ever made and still my pick for the best film of the decade, if not the century. The first scene of Asghar Farhadi’s masterpiece A Separation opens with a married couple – Nader and Simin – arguing in front of a judge over their petition for divorce. This single scene, filmed in one long take, epitomizes Farhadi’s incredible style of storytelling. He takes a simple scenario and fills it with nuanced characters, moral complexity, and cultural conflict. In the scene, Nader and Simin are arguing over the custody of their daughter Termeh. Simin wants to leave Iran so that Termeh may receive a better education and have a brighter future while Nader wants to stay…

Once in a while there comes along a film that features characters who you think couldn’t be more different from you, but whom you start to feel for as though they were part of your own family, as though you share a life with them. And by the end of the experience, you know that something inside you has shifted. You begin to make room for new ideas, new ways of thinking. I’ve watched only a handful of films that have done that to me, and A Separation is foremost among them. I don’t want to explain the plot too much; the less that viewers know going in, the better their experience will be. Besides, A Separation is the rare…

Simply put, A Separation is an incredible drama. It is well written, well acted, well shot, and well edited. For not a single second is it boring and it is always compelling. Very few dramas are better than this. The first scene of A Separation sets a false impression for what this film is about. It is not merely a film about a couple trying to divorce, because that story becomes intertwined with one of religion and crime, and how one family ruins the life of another. A Separation centres of a middle class Iranian family, yet the film is also about social and religious divisions within Iranian society. Different social strata have different needs. A poorer family within the…

very tense from the get-go, excellent portrayal of the kids who suffer, especially the character of the daughter in her adolescence is well written, who wants them to be together, and is so mature for her age. the miscarriage scene adds a layer of investigation, which is brutal. great and a must watch movie.

The film was feeling very real, I personally liked this movie. Meaning, such situations have been shown in the movie which a person goes through at some point or the other, fear of false, accusation and God. You will get into the movie from the beginning when you see the condition of his father, then the story progresses very well, which may be slow but does not bore you because the Persian environment was good. Nader truly loved his father,…

No subtitles needed btw… FUCK YOU! In all seriousness I almost teared up — can’t believe how well rounded this film is. So phenomenally written, framed, performed and generally executed it spoke to me like magic. I don’t relate to this film in any specific way, yet I continuously felt connected and emotionally attached to every single shot, every subplot, and every moment. Each character is dynamic, fully fleshed out and casted so incredibly that it makes your interpretation and…

This is not a legal drama. The case is just the pressure that forces everything else to the surface. At the centre is a man holding three things simultaneously and failing to drop any of them. A divorce that is getting more complicated by the day. A father with Alzheimer’s who used to say his son’s name and some single words and has now stopped even that, which means the man is essentially taking care of a doll at this…

Just like Asghar Farhadi’s A Hero, A Separation is made up of melodramatic characters that are compulsive liars acting in bad faith to navigate their way through a plot that can only hang together through an unbelievably tangled mess of contrivances. Parts of it hint at problems that could exist in the real world, but it’s so determined to keep the mystery going that it loses all credibility.

The way farhadi deals with the complexity of characters in his screenplay and uses it as a tools to drive the major dramatic portions of the film is a skill in itself The clever parallels of dysfuntionality amongst the two couples and how seemingly similar problems are dealt differently just sits well with the natural flow of the film The editing , cinematography , the choice to do sync sound everything just enhances the overall viewing experience .

One of the best court procedural films I’ve seen in a long time, A Separation isn’t just about a failing marriage. It’s a separation on several levels. Separation between classes, between genders, between cultures, between ages, between the truth and justice. There are so many metatextual layers to the story. I absolutely loved the ending, specifically the blocking. I get why this is on so many best-of lists. The acting and storytelling are gripping — and Farhadi’s cinematic choices feel just as raw, natural, vulnerable, and realistic as the performances.

There are too many separations in this film, between social classes, within a marriage, and between a father and his child. In the end, none of the characters truly feels completely honest. Everyone is willing to do certain things to protect their own version of the truth and survive the circumstances they are living in. What I find most interesting is how a child is forced to deal with problems that belong to adults, until she eventually becomes a victim…

My first Asghar Farhadi film, and it certainly won’t be the last. Brilliant in every aspect of filmmaking, one of the most honest scripts and acting you will ever watch, the way Asghar puts the camera in the far corner to make you feel helpless and just watch pure pain genius camerawork all around, not a single mediocre acting performance, but Shahab Hosseini as Hojjat is the standout here for me, one of the best acting i’ve ever seen in…

With or without realizing the viewer is flung into the judges seat, from start to finish the characters are pleading their case and nothing ever seems black or white. As simplistic as it might be to say the characters here and the story all feel so real. The sympathy one might feel keeps going back and forth, the layers of stress, miscommunication, and fear of peer judgement.

Maalesef olur. Burada da belki de söylenmiş nice beylik…

Chinese below The screenplay is remarkably accomplished, and I especially admire the way the film uses space. The framing not only reflects the characters’ inner states, but also cleverly restricts the information available to the audience. Every major character is fully realized, with convincing motivations of their own; no one is simply “good” or “bad.” And yet, the messy, miserable reality of life inevitably unfolds from the collision of their respective truths. Nader’s insistence on personal dignity and self-respect; Simin’s…

on one hand, the plot synopsis is a crime bcus this movie is so much more than about a divorce, but to elaborate more about it further would just be spoiling it completely. this is one of those movies where the more you watch it, it actively (perhaps consciously) resists from being categorized. from the first scene you’ll think its a standard family drama (as i did), but then it becomes a legal drama, a crime drama, a mystery even, before…

What a real and grounded movie! If I were to pick a word to describe this movie I’d say “real”. Starting from the acting, which was phenomenal by literally everyone; the little girl, the old man, and the father & mother. The last scene with their daughter choosing felt so real. The way the director left us waiting on the answer with the characters left us space to process what happened in the movie. I think she would choose to live…
