few things scream early 2000s movie like Kevin Costner and Ice-T killing a warehouse full of cops to Spineshank and Hed P.E. instead of Elvis in a movie prominently featuring Elvis impersonators; as crude, garish and baffling as you’ve likely heard over the past twenty years but what more can you truly expect from a movie that begins with two CGI scorpions fighting for no reason and ends with a boat ride set to Follow Me by Uncle Kracker — amazing that WB spent 62 million on this mess which is, adjusted for inflation, more than they spent on Baz Luhrman’s Elvis

A long-forgotten and ludicrously-expensive Elvis impersonator casino heist movie that you’d think more people would remember based on the crew casting alone (Kurt Russell, Kevin Costner, Christian Slater, David Arquette, Bokeem Woodbine) but bombing as hard as it did just a few months before Ocean’s 11 came out is one of those turns of fate you just can’t account for. Anyway, I’d love to tell you this is actually a hidden gem that was wrongfully cast aside in 2001 because the premise has merit, but it really can’t overcome what has to be some of the tackiest, hyperactive “cool” directing, editing, and scoring you’ll find from this era, and in that rare non-endearing way. Opens with a giant CGI scorpion video game battle opening credits sequence and closes with an Uncle Cracker needle drop. In between, Elvis impersonators gratuitously shoot dozens set to the strains of nu-metal and electronica. Literally features the song “Bad to the Bone.” It’s hard to believe so many talented people signed on for this. Truly weird, dumb artifact of the early 2000s Shitcore Era of popular culture.

The worst opening credits sequence in motion picture history. The most outrageously bad Costner performance in a career of nothing but. An Elvis motif, but a soundtrack of nothing but nu-metal and club jams. Women are cum dumpsters and the only black character gets dropped from a helicopter 29 minutes in. This is one of the worst movies, period.

“That’s the last of it kid, go I’ll cover you!” You know, I get why this movie is hated by so many, but I really enjoyed it. Kurt Russell just makes anything enjoyable and when you add on a nonchalant dickhead performance by Kevin Costner, it just works for me. An Elvis heist movie that slowly rolls into Reservoir Dogs (sorta) by the second half just worked. Plus I loved “Jesse James” and his character arc with Micheal and him being a father figure for him. But I gotta say, the opening credits almost ruined the whole movie. What the absolute fuck was that dog? I mean the CGI Scorpion man WHAT THE FUCK! The editing also was annoying and headache inducing, but it definitely worked for some scenes like the elevator scene.

I can only recommend this movie if you are an extremely committed, black Diamond run bad movie fan—certainly nothing to be proud of, but you know who you are. It is obnoxious, idiotic, douchey as hell AND over 2 hours long. BUT it’s shitty in such a way as to feel borderline experimental. What if we hired a director who only ever watched the bro-iest movies of the 1990’s and gave him two huge movie stars and 60 million fucking dollars? From the opening scorpion fight (yes) featuring sincerely the worst cgi I’ve ever seen in a major motion picture, to the Killing Zoe inspired casino massacre to the closing credits which feature a MUSIC VIDEO WITH THE CAST and Kurt Russell as Elvis, this is required viewing for broken people. Saddest thing of all is Costner, who is legitimately good as a guy who kills everyone. That guy picks the weirdest times to actually try.

It’s a conundrum to myself how ‘3,000 Miles to Graceland’ thrived beyond the screenplay phase in pre-production. The final draft is a cavalcade of nanocephalic profanity and splenetic, Tarantino-esque hemorrhaging with the maturity of a grunting neanderthal. It is also boundless with inconsistencies like the heretofore sensible Cybil (Courtney Cox,) abandoning her son with the ambiguously chivalrous gunslinger Michael Zane (Kurt Russell) despite the body count in his wake. Demian Lichtenstein bungles the mayhem with craggy cliches like the miraculous bulletproof vest save. Kevin Costner titillates with desperado villainy but he is the rogue delight in this rotisserie, anti-heart-pounding flameout.

The premise of a heist at an Elvis convention, I like. The cast includes lots of faces I also like. The film though is a flat mess. Re-graded to dampen the overlighting, and re-scored to something more in keeping (I’d up the Elvis soundtrack) and it might be worthwhile. Best thing about it is Kurt Russell once again playing an Elvis homage, and reliving his moment from It Happened At the World’s Fair. Meh.

Five blokes dressed as Elvis Presley and armed with automatic weapons rob a casino of millions of dollars during an Elvis impressionist competition. I couldn’t read that and not throw it on my watchlist. It’s a 2000s heist flick with Kurt Russell being an aura lord, a whole lot of guns, money and nods to the king of rock and roll himself. Oh, and an early 2000s Courtney Cox. Sheesh. What’s not to like? Actually really liked this!

I had a hopeful feeling going into this. It would at least be a solid heist movie, right? I mean, Elvis impersonators robbing a Las Vegas casino and a stacked cast. What could possibly go wrong? Well, it turns out, pretty much everything that’s what. Too many problems to list, but I cannot forgive the horrendous treatment of the female characters in this film. I’d rather they’d used a male-only cast. Why are the women all whores and gold-diggers? Untrustworthy and abused these women beg for male validation and salvation. One star for the fantastic Elvis costumes. One star for the end credits.
