War is hell! Estonia was first occupied by Rusia and then by Germany, WWII. Both countries conscripted young Estonians into their armies. And so the Estonians started killing each other. It had little to do with ideology. This movie takes us into the lives of soldiers on both sides. In a strange twist of fate, one Estonian meets the sister of the countryman he killed and they fall in love. War brings out the best and worst in people. It is a platform where good and evil battle and where good and evil manifests itself on all sides.

“he!l h!tler!” “ei ütle!” will forever be iconic

One Popular Film Around The World Challenge Film #52 Estonia An extremely disturbing film about the atrocities of war and how Estonians were pitted against each other just trying to find room to survive during WWII. The perspective of this film is very unique and one I’m sure resonates with many Estonians, but as a film, I think it doesn’t stand out compared to others in the genre.

This film felt like two films in one. The first half felt like a bunch of WW2 reenactors bringing out their toys and bashing them against each other. Not much in terms of story or character. The second half introduces a much more compelling character and the narrative and theme become richer. That said the film suffered greatly from over exposure in all the scenes shot outside during the day, with many of those shots being entirely engulfed by bright white light, and then for the night time scenes in Tallinn the camera felt under exposed and some of the shots were blurry. Overall a pretty decent production for an indie low budget Estonian film.

A noble failure. The historical calamities that have befallen the Eastern Europeans have been underserved by the movies, a fact that 1944 tries to address (it was Estonia’s official submission to the Oscars). But its title is not the only generic aspect of it, since almost everything in here you’ve seen done countless times before, often better and on a bigger canvas. There’s moments here that recall the phony movie from Inglorious Basterds, where the German sniper kept mowing down endless hordes, and they all fell dramatically to the floor. It’s not a good look. I admire its perspective though, which is never seen in Hollywood WW2 productions. American films paint WW2 as a struggle against the Nazis, omitting all the atrocities committed by Stalin’s Red Army. Here we get to see some of that, reminding us that it didn’t matter who won the war: in the end we’re all losers on the way to the grave.

During the invasion of Germans and Soviets, Estonian people were forced to different sides and on the battlefield they faced each other. In the heart of 1944 is the ultimate hope for freedom, the hope that nothing like this will ever happen again. It’s universal like the great war pictures are though it never takes any special steps in cinematic storytelling but rather tells the story in the fashion we are used to. But its braveness and humanity strongly appeals to me as the son of neighbor country whose people have also killed each other because of this cursed division between pointless ideologies. It might be too much to ask for humanity to abandon ideologies and simply believe that everyone…

A World War II drama telling the rare story about the Estonian situation. Definitely one that Estonians will hold near to their heart, and for others it has some solid moments. But compare it to the thousands of war movies that’s been made over the years, it’s not that remarkable. Main struggle is that it doesn’t establish the leads well enough to make one care too much about the individual parts. The positive is that it tells an down to earth version of the war and the torn situation they were in.

// 🇬🇧: Anti-war film in all its senses. It shows us how cruel and absurd war is. Sounded really good at first, as it has a lot of potential to show the complexity of war, as well as how devastating and pointless it is. But it doesn’t really live up to it’s potential. The battle scenes are underwhelming, the story and characters are lacking weight and personality. It also just feels cheap at times. All a bit underwhelming.

1944 is an Estonian war drama film directed by Elmo Nüganen. In July 1944 on the Tannenberg Line, Estonia, a unit of Estonian soldiers from the Waffen SS fought against the advancing Red Army. Soviet forces outnumber tanks and infantry and German forces have to retreat through streams of civilian refugees. After a brutal battle, the victors are a unit of the Estonian Red Army. While the dead of both sides are buried in a mass grave, an Estonian Red Army named Jüri searches the body of an Estonian from the German forces named Karl and finds an unsent letter to Karl’s sister Aino in Tallinn. When the Russians capture the city, he delivers the letter in person and he…

Ehh it’s okay it’s not the greatest war movie that I’ve seen but it does depict how fast life can end. In an instant. But the movie doesn’t hold much sentimental significance, which is what I personally like to look forward to in war films.

The best World War 2 movie I have ever seen. One of the few movies that made me tear up. I appreciate how the humanity of soldiers from both sides was shown. Both the stories of Karl and Yuri are so tragic and beautiful. I love how this movie portrays war and death, and shows how the innocent are hurt the most. “The innocent feel guilty and the guilty feel nothing”

1944 takes place over the course of four months during WWII. As the Soviets plan on retaking Estonia from the Nazis, a group of Estonian soldiers on opposing sides have no other choice to fight each other. This movie doesn’t shy away from realism with its mostly bloodless battle sequences, superior production values, and a surprising sense of humanity. However, I feel other WWII movies have captured the tension, themes of bravery and sacrifice, and gritty realism a 1000x better than in this movie. Yes, I’m looking at you, Hacksaw Ridge and Saving Private Ryan!

1944 first estonian movie i’ve watched. it was amazing. it had beautiful visuals, and i loved the fact it gave mini descriptions and dates in chronological order in each cutscene. it was a little upsetting how the plot was kind of empty and there wasn’t really enough time to get an attachment with a character, but once it happens they are suddenly DEAD (ahem… KARL.) also i was confused why the POV shifted to an red army estonian soldier, and…

A war drama film released in 2015, directed by Estonian filmmaker Elmo Nüganen. The film depicts Estonia—left within the Soviet sphere of influence as a result of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact signed between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, and annexed by the USSR in 1940—being occupied by German forces following the launch of Operation Barbarossa in June 1941, and later falling back under Soviet control as the Germans began their retreat.

heart wrenching film about estonia during world war ii and how estonians protected each other. i was vaguely familiar with estonia’s back and forth occupation by both sides, but obviously seeing it play out is much more impactful. it’s devastating being torn between sympathizing with the estonian soldiers who had no choice and my deep dislike for both of the armies they had to represent. the way the perspective swaps was really nicely done although i did spend the whole…

This is meant to be a powerful examination of a country that was caught in the middle of the devastations of the Eastern Front, but frankly, it doesn’t work. It’s script was clearly written by a soldier, giving it an appreciable authenticity. But the way the perspective is split and the unsubtle way in which the torch is passed was a bad idea. They should have been scrambled together before ultimately colliding in combat.

There is just far too little representation of those who found themselves stuck between a rock and a hard place in Eastern Europe two massive armies either side that care little about your sovereign nation with people joining either side or fighting both with hopes that which ever side they find themselves on will lead to the best outcome for their respective nation.

The story is divided into two parts and deliberately avoiding a single “side” showing how the same conflict looks from opposing positions within the same nationality. It shifts the focus away from spectacle and toward personal moments. Capturing fear and the tragic reality of fighting fellow countrymen under foreign powers.

A solidly made, if not particularly exceptional war movie, focussing on the perhaps lesser known perspective of Estonia. With its young men forcibly conscripted by both the Germans and the Russians, which ultimately led to them into fighting against their own countrymen, in their own land, while not particularly subscribing to the ideologies of either side, it’s a powerful illustration of the hopelessness facing small nations caught between two warring superpowers and fighting just in an attempt to survive.

Soldiers fight for their country, for honor, for glory. But what happens when a soldier is caught between two titans? He can either bend or break. Funny how, in the face of helplessness, a man would rather betray his own countrymen just to cling to a life that isn’t even guaranteed.
