85 This may not be the peak of Michael Bay’s trademark toxicity (6 Underground), nor is it aiming for the level of his mind-numbing blockbuster spectacles, but even in this (relatively) tame register, Ambulance is a blast and a half. Michael Bay goes absolutely apeshit with the drone photography as if he invented it. The camera is consistently taking a step back to swoop in and re-contextualize the chaos. It makes the frantic editing all the more complex and fluid. Jake Gyllenhaal, Eiza González, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II all turn in strong performances. And the action is simply sublime. As usual, it’s packed with gnarly pyrotechnics and frazzled continuity. It bursts with movement and collisions and explosions of absurd beauty.…

Everything Bay, Everywhere All At Once. Non-stop corniness, violence and property destruction, insane drone camera work, equally worshipful reverence of meathead cops and cartel guys, Gyllenhaal in full manic weirdo mode, a love letter to movies and the biggest character actor of all: the city of Los Angeles! Bay combines Heat and Speed, but what if instead of the really tight, cool crew in Heat, we had a collection of the most unlikable oafs and morons imaginable? What if instead of Sandra Bullock driving a bus, we had a hot babe who has to pull a guy’s spleen out of his guts at 60 mph? Despite Bay’s cornball jingoism and cop worship, what is this movie really about? It begins…

the fuck was i thinking watching this in an empty Los Angeles theater at 12:45 in the afternoon. this is a very special two-part episode of NCIS: LA and it deserves nothing less than a packed Friday night crowd at the Vista, hootin and hollerin each time Bay namedrops one of his own movies or calls the mayor a “Silver Lake liberal.” Whoever first told Michael Bay about drones gets a +3 to heaven.

Bay goes back to his Bruckheimer action-thriller roots and reworks decades of American heist cinema (The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, To Live and Die in LA, Heat just to name a few) into a pure, white-knuckle piece of sustained kinetic machinery that frequently feels like a lost Tony Scott movie we were meant to get somewhere between 2000-2010. Not without some minor instances of Bay’s juvenile humor, generic periphery characters, clumsy lurches into over-sentimentality, etc but in the broad strokes this is without question one of his most mature works. Instead of an evil sense of cruelty or nihilism, his deployment of maximalist destruction here actually plays into a larger, expressive symbol: a crumbling, militarized system of steel…

Pretty fun action blockbuster that’s a bit too long, all the performances are solid standout being Jake Gyllenhaal. Not to diss the movie but it’s kinda sad Michael Bay looks like Michael man compared to most* big budget action films especially the ones made for streaming like the gray man ect. Plus the budget was 1/4th the gray man and it’s infinitely better, using actual stunts and pyrotechnics so the action feels like it has weight and you’re not watching…

This is Bay’s Tenet. This entire movie is one big chase sequence, like how Tenet the movie was one temporal pincer movement. As a fan of the director(s), you either love it to death or you hate it, there is no in between, no “ah it could have been better”, no. Michael Bay at his most unhinged in terms of everything, the writing, dialogues, sound design, design of each action blocks, editing, everything. I didnt know what to make of…

We’re not the bad guys, we’re just the guys trying to get home! So right off the bat, something I love about this is how quickly it gets moving. The robbery itself is almost inconsequential. We don’t even see most of what happens before the point that everything goes sideways. The movie isn’t interested in being about anything other than what it is about. It isn’t a bank robbery movie, it isn’t about planning a heist or anything. It’s about…

2nd watch has me convinced this is Michael Bay’s best movie since Pain & Gain? The combination of Covid and a somewhat realistic-ish (for him) screenplay really focused his whole thing up! Bay’s always visually innovative but I only really get into his movies when his fantasist Bayhem maximalism butts up against real world stories and characters. You need that tension for something to develop that’s more than just sound and fury. Zemeckis has become like this too. Wildly unbelievable that a working EMT would be caked in so much make-up for the entirety of her adventure, an increasing pet peeve with Bro filmmakers.

I might not love all his work, especially the latter transformer films but, it’s crazy how disrespected Michael Bay is. A lot of people claim he’s all spectacle but he’s delivered some of the best films about people and the human condition, peaking with Pain and Gain, followed by the bad boy films and now this. This was a genuinely wild and explosive film that also packed a lot of emotional punch. You could tell how important it was to…

The core of Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza González is obviously really strong. But this was genuinely the longest 2h16m movie I’ve ever seen. Unbelievably thrilling, but wow a good portion of footage could’ve been cut. Not to mention Michael Bay overused the fuck out of the drones. Makes for a couple really cool shots, but I was, and still am, nauseous from watching this. Fun ride though! Additionally, there is really just so much terrible dialogue in this film that serves no purpose at all. Nobody manages to insult the audience’s intelligence just like Michael Bay. There’s a special level of stupid only he braves to venture into. It’s distinctly 𝓪 style though, so half a point for that. Did not know this existed and was by Bay when I jumped into it already running, but a few minutes are enough to get this special feeling of being treated like a drooling idiot that only he manages to instill so reliably. Even after this recognition, there is nothing to enjoy about this.
