Everyone has their favorite ’80s or ’80s-adjacent kids-on-bikes adolescence-nostalgia movie / series, and the one that came out the month I graduated high school (i.e. the lunch of my most wistful summer) was always destined to be mine. Cary going down into the creature’s lair with Joe instead of Charles is a major miscalculation, but I have no other gripes. It’s enduringly kinetic, funny, full of fun turns, and Giacchino has never been better in “youthful yearning” mode.

This really remains like the best Amblin pastiche. It’s so good! Very pure…I remember crying at several moments when I first saw it in theaters. But DANG do I hate a few moments in the third act. It’s such a shame that it gets so junky and that Neville Paige can’t design an interesting looking creature to save his life. Even if the monster just looked different, the emotional climax would really hit home

Production value! Duffer brothers must’ve watched this and came up with Stranger Things. One of my favorite films growing up as a kid—and it still holds up I think. Reminds me of how I was growing up in a lot of ways. I was inspired to rewatch this after The End of Oak Street due to some similarities but this is tiers above that. “I know that’s your camera, sir, but technically, that’s my film.”

Each time I re-watched it I would catch another piece of dialog and think “Oh, that’s what that means.” or “Oh that’s what that was referencing.” The conversations feel so natural in this movie because it’s actually how a group of kids would talk. Muy buena. Se podría decir que Super 8 fue la película que inició la moda retro en la década del 2010, y que más tarde tanto explotó Stranger Things. Sin embargo, en Super 8 los personajes son mucho más naturales. De haber salido varios años más tarde, de seguro hubieran hecho una serie o varias secuelas, pero por suerte no fue así.
