i’m not sure how like, innovative i think the adam wingard thing is, but he sure can make me laugh. “don’t fucking tell me to calm down, tom!” really got me. just the idea of a home invader being named “tom.” that’s funny!

Did I miss something? I guess this is supposed to be a dark comedy and somewhat of a send-up of the home invasion subgenre, but I found this to play itself too straight to be very funny. It’s also too generic to differentiate itself from the movies it’s trying to be self-aware about. I guess I had a little bit of fun with this though.

Simon Berrett certainly has a great formula down in this and The Guest. The structure of a early 1st act intrigue, 2nd act twist, then morphing into deep genre territory, and multiple set pieces leading up to a punchy end. 🥹Finally watched my first Kill Count. The only reason it misses out on the four stars for me is that I find the dialogue stilted, and the acting subpar before the attack, afterwards I think the main actress shines as Erin, and she walked so that Grace in Ready or Not could run. It fulfils many moments of catharsis if you’re a fan of horror, most especially in her absolute brutalisation of many a masked killer. The kills are great; I enjoy the razor wire outside the door so much, along with the blender through the skull.

Did not feel very promising until it got it’s big twist out of the way and then that seemed to free the movie to have more fun and get creative with the violence. It’s basically a black comedy by the end and that’s much, much better than the mediocre slasher it feels like at first.
