I am LIVING for Stanley Tucci playing Philippe d’Orléans (my favorite queer historical figure). I love this movie for addressing that he had a male lover!! Also, Alan Rickman is just an amazing man. EVERY SCENE WITH ALAN WERE AMAZING I AM SHOOK BY THE ROSE CONVERSATION.

Entendo as pessoas que não gostaram desse filme, mas eu particularmente gostei muito. Para quem gosta da história da monarquia francesa eu recomendo demais. Esse filme merecia ser mais famoso. Special place in my heart for this one. First ticket I ever bought to the London Film Festival and have been going every year since. Took my Dad – he’s not the type to get starstruck for anyone but when Rickman walked past us to get to the stage he was beaming. We both had a wee cry. It’s what movies are all about, really. ♥️

Solid direction and acting from Alan, lovely costumes and cinematography and a story with a modern twist lead to a well-done costume drama. Well meaning but rather incompetent fluff. The film just needed a bigger budget and… actually to shoot in France, where the film is set. As it is the film’s design is a bit nonsensical, Winslet looks a bit confused, Schoenarts looks a bit dumb and the whole thing is a bit awkward. A shame that the great Rickman bowed out in this underwhelming manner.
