So, uh, funny story: My friend came up to me today and said “Sam you are going to give me a movie tonight and I have to watch it and I’m going to give you one and you’re going to do the same.” I said yes. I made him watch HOLY MOTORS. He made me watch this. He has never seen this movie. He has never seen the first movie either. I called him up on the phone after I finished this and proceeded to scream expletives and random plot points at him for about 20 minutes. Then I went and had some chocolate chip cookie dough. It was delicious.

We’re not in the Xander Zone anymore unfortunately. Yet at the same time xXx: State of the Union continues the ridiculous stuff the first movie did, although this time it’s not as ambitious with its action or anything really. Ice Cube doesn’t have that goofy rad dude energy Vin Diesel brought, he’s just doing the usual Ice Cube thing. Which is no biggie for me tbh he was alright. Those visuals though, it’s so VFX heavy at times it looks like a video game cutscene, those big sky dives and practical jumps are long gone. It’s still kinda enjoyable though, maybe not really, still very stupid for sure.

Having a nerdy white guy listen to rap music and tell people to get crunk is so 2005 it hurts. I miss the goofy charm of Vin Diesel but teenage me thought this ruled so it gets the nostalgia pass. Plus, Ice Cube and Xzibit hijack a tank.

so fucking funny. ice cube should be an action star again. there’s a part where he tells a member of the NRA he’s racist and I was like “hell yeah” this is a great political satire. my favorite scene is when ice cube disguises himself as a waiter by only wearing a tux then when he finds out they took a picture of him in the tux he says “damn they’re good”

Instantly forgettable but slightly entertaining, Lee Tamahori’s “XXX: State of the Union” is a tonally inconsistent, strangely assembled, and completely unnecessary followup to Rob Cohen’s only moderately better “XXX.” Ditching the extreme sports angle of the first film, this chapter finds Ice Cube’s prison-releasee working for the US government as a secret agent with a certain set of skills. Willem Dafoe’s career really confuses me. Every so often he’ll just pop up in a really weird movie like this where he just looks completely out of place. I don’t know… at least focusing on that somewhat entertained me unlike this mess of a film.

Remember this being a guilty pleasure watch when I was younger. Gets off to an explosive start with its pre-titles sequence. Ice Cube is decent as the lead and well suited. “This XXX needs more attitude” – I see what they did there. Willem Dafoe and Samuel L Jackson are highlights with classy presence, elevating scenes. As with many films then, the ending feels a bit much with its overuse of dated CGI. Personally, I would prefer to watch this than Tamahori’s 007 entry of Die Another Day though.

Replaces the stunts of the first one for a more action approach and its no worse for it. Ice cube does great in the fight scenes this one maybe dumber than the first one but its not less fun.

The decision to replace Vin Diesel with Ice Cube is kind of baffling – while it has the potential to be addition by subtraction, Cube is ultimately just as limited of an actor, and completely unqualified to play the lead. That said, it is hard not to enjoy a big dumb spy movie that stars both Samuel L. Jackson and Willem Dafoe. It is trash, but at least it is watchable. Weird that they basically drop the whole extreme sports thing from the first movie. I did find some mild amusement in the whole “black James Bond” concept of this one, though.

A step down from the original for sure. Replacing Vin Diesel with Ice Cube already isn’t the best sign, but between the direction, editing, effects, and overall plot, they definitely missed the mark. I’ll give props to Sam Jackson for still doing good, as well as Dafoe who steals every movie he’s in. But overall, not a great flick. Not the absolute worst tho

I havn’t seen the original but I wanted to watch this for Cube, it is suitable mindless and must to enjoying some of the ridiculous action. It didn’t wholly sustain my attention for the full runtime but I got what I expected and perhaps a little more. Most of the smiles came from the constant need to imply Ice Cube’s bad ass-dom, “Welcome to the first tank-jackin’ in history.”

State of the Union has all the classics: bad cgi, terrible one liner dialogue that is trying too hard to be edgy, bad acting from a musician turned actor, insanely Y2K looking technology. Ice Cube replacing Vin Diesel is a hard sell since Cube is not really super spy material, he can’t even run that fast, it looks like he gets winded half the time. 😆 But what Cube lacks in physicality he makes up for in blowing up stuff.
